Most of us little people don't parade about in a golden carriage with our cock out expecting the nation to collectively suck it. But here we are.

I only saw a few minutes of it as I searched for a normal news programme this morning but that definitely sounds more interesting than the bits I saw. Although saying that I don't actually have a cock to have out or get sucked.

Papernotplastic · 06/05/2023 11:23

Can I ask those of you who feel so strongly about this what age you are? 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60+? Obviously a hereditary monarchy is an anachronism but I’m surprised by quite how intensely some people feel about today.

Prescottdanni123 · 06/05/2023 11:24

@pointythings

If these animals never panic, is it alright for me to throw things at them or scream through a megaphone near them? No, even if they didn't spook, I'd be arrested because I might have spooked them, therefore I was endangering both animal and rider.

Although there is evidence to prove that they do indeed sometimes spook.

A horse spooked on Harry and Meghan's wedding day in the procession and threw his rider. That was without a megaphone. A police horse panicked during a protest/riot a few years ago and threw their rider off, seriously injuring her.

And the police had reason to believe the protestors were going to climb over the barrier. The protestors have denied this but they would do, wouldn't they?

Where on earth are you getting this from? Where?

@Prescottdanni123 I don't think you know a lot about the kind of training police horses and military horses undergo.

They're trained to handle having things thrown at them, being charged by people, being attacked, having smoke grenades go off - the lot. They're amazing animals which have an amazing bond with their riders. We can argue about whether they should be used at all and trained at all from an animal rights perspective, but the fact is that they are. And they absolutely can handle this. You're making things up.

They are amazing and as a treat a local primary school were visited by a few of them. The children were so excited and it was all going so well until one of the horses got spooked by something, no one seemed to know what, and stood on a 4 year old who needed hospital treatment.

50s.

And the Royal Family have such a grip on the popular media.

But we won't be having major Royal events for a while - so the only way to stay relevant is to release pictures of children and to do things like go to a pub. Or on the tube.

I'm amazed that so many people trust the Met. Barely a week, perhaps even a day, goes by it seems when I don't read about a Met officer being arrested, charged or sentenced on suspicion of rape, sexual assault or other crimes.

DCs 30s and feel the same way

@HoldingTheDoor 100%. Absolutely baffling.

Mayorquimby2 · 06/05/2023 11:29

Genuinely incredible the amount of disingenuous thick cunts who think "they could protest any other day of the year" is a worthy argument.

Laughable really

cakeorwine · 06/05/2023 11:30

Prescottdanni123 · 06/05/2023 11:28

So having a megaphone is cause for arrest because of what could happen?
And thinking someone could jump over a barrier is cause for arrest to?

The word "could" is doing a lot of heavy lifting there.

What else could people be arrested for?

OP posts:
pointythings · 06/05/2023 11:30

@Prescottdanni123 of course it isn't right to throw things at horses. Or people. But arresting people because they might throw things is illegal. It's thought crime. If you don't understand that, then I despair.

And waving anti monarchy banners is no more likely to spook horses than waving union flags is, therefore both should be allowed.

Why are you so obsessed with the idea that the highly trained horses with highly trained riders might spook and everything go to hell? If you genuinely think this is a risk, shouldn't you be protesting about horses being used to police any events? Or protesting about all the people taking their kids to this highly risky event?

The protesters were not near horses, did nothing to horses, gave no indication whatsoever they'd ever had a dream about horses. They were not arrested for the good of the horses Confused

Papernotplastic · 06/05/2023 11:30

Interesting. I’m in my 40s. It just feels meaningless to me.

tirganainm · 06/05/2023 11:31

What the British are witnessing is an erosion of civil liberties, akin to what's in place autocratic countries. Yet, we are quick to condemn others of the same. To quote Edmund Burke, the greater the power, the more dangerous the abuse.

There is a generation of people who can't afford a University education, a generation of people who can't afford housing, a generation of people who can't afford children. Yet, people of this nation happily camped out for weeks to procure a space to pay homage to an institution who goes to great lengths to conceal their wealth. A wealth built upon the slave trade, a wealth built upon the blood shed in its former colonies. A wealth built on the plundering the wealth from any country it attempted to "civilize".

pointythings · 06/05/2023 11:33

@Iwasafool why was the 4 year old close enough to the horse to be stepped on in the first place? Failure of safeguarding.

Nothing is ever 100% safe in life, in any area, but these horses are being deployed in a situation where there are going to be things waving about and people are going to be making a lot of noise. The choice therefore is simple:

  1. you trust the training, with the caveat that it is imperfect;
  2. you do not allow anyone to make noise or wave banners, whether pro or anti monarchy.

No double standards.

FoxFeatures · 06/05/2023 11:33

We are paying for this nonsense so we should be able to protest it too. This country is moving in very worrying directions.

Prescottdanni123 · 06/05/2023 11:33

@pointythings

Horses do spook though. Like I mentioned about the rider who got thrown on Harry and Meghan's wedding day and the police officer whose horse got spooked when on duty and threw her off, leading to serious injuries. And the four year old that another poster mentioned that got trodden on my a trained police horse who got spooked and needed hospital treatment. So it could happen today and as horses are herd animals, when one panics, more can also panic.

Choconut · 06/05/2023 11:33

I wouldn't go but I'm glad that these protesters can't ruin it for the people who do want to be there and see it. Why do people always want to ruin things for others to make their point? I had enough of fucking extinction rebellion but at least they want to save the planet, protest on another day outside Buckingham Palace and don't ruin other peoples day with your protest.

Papernotplastic · 06/05/2023 11:35

It’s odd. If you protest in the U.K. you’re quite likely to be arrested or moved on by the police unless you’re Just Stop Oil who seem to get away with things that would have every other group shoved into the back of a van.

Don’t ruin other peoples day with your over the top ostentatious religious ceremony which involves closing roads and too many people on the street in the way of people trying to go about their day. Why do people get to celebrate a rich old man any way they want no matter how disruptive?

SidewaysOtter · 06/05/2023 11:35

I’m in my 40s.

With the right to protest comes the responsibility not to be a cunt about it, either to cause unreasonable disruption or, for an event like this, spoil other’s enjoyment. I’m glad the protesters were arrested and I completely agree with the new law.
