Imagine, a 'peaceful' protestor throws something, either at someone or deliberately at one of the horses. The horse spooks and throws his rider off, who is seriously injured upon landing. Other horses panic. One careers towards the barrier, behind which is a large crowd of members of the public. Because the police officers standing guard and the barrier can do fuck all against that much horse flesh, the public panic and run. People get trampled in all the chaos, possibly to death. All because the police trusted protestors to be peaceful. It could happen. With so many people present, a lot of people could get harmed if the protestors aren't as peaceful as they make out to be, or drunken idiots join in for the crack, or people pretend to be peaceful protestors but are actually there to just cause a much harm to other people are possible turn up. But hey, who cares if dozens of people get injured, possibly even killed as long as we are able to exercise our human right to protest, eh?

Alright, Chicken Little. Enough with the hyperbole.

And now I'm going to have Imagine stuck in my head for the rest of the day.

That's the funniest thing I've read all day. Imagine I was Queen - on the other hand don't !

KiwiMum2023 · 06/05/2023 10:49

Proper order. They should all be locked up.

Kim Jong, is that you?

Laiste · 06/05/2023 10:51

Maybe the children would stampede and crush the horses ....... can you imagine that!?

vera99 · 06/05/2023 10:51

Could I just use this serious thread about the right to protest and freedom of speech just to say I love Harry and Meghan. It's such a shame she can't be here as she would have wiped the floor with the also rans.

Prescottdanni123 · 06/05/2023 10:52

@HoldingTheDoor

The horses will be used to crowds. Not missiles being thrown with force at them.

Madamecastafiore · 06/05/2023 10:52

Utter nonsense bleating on about China and North Korea. FFS have you read or watched documentaries about the appalling lack of human rights? The torture? The people who go missing?

As far as I can tell the narrative that they weren't where they'd agreed to be is false. They were unloading the van and it's entirely possible that was a little way from the agreed point. I imagine it's fairly hard to get a vehicle anywhere in central London today.

Their Twitter is saying that they are on the other side of the monument that they were expecting to be but that is hardly a long way away! If they'd wholeheartedly moved it would be tricky for the many supporters to find them - it wouldn't be in their interest. They have been very open all week about where they'd be and have had multiple meetings with authorities to agree it!

Maybe the police who were posted where they were supposed to be knew the plan, maybe the police posted where they weren't supposed to be knew nothing about the plan so treated them as if there wasn't a plan.

Roussette · 06/05/2023 10:53

Although according to reports, they weren't actually in the designated area.

Prescott incorrect. They were across the road from where they should be, the only place to pull the van up.

Unrest is hardly likely to break out lol. This is just people who want to have a voice, that is it. They are about 0.1% of the people there. How that would turn into 'unrest' god alone knows

I am abroad, I have checked out our national news and it is all about the King and the Coronation, so far no reports of any protests or arrests. So not widely reported at all, If it does get reported it will be eclipsed by the reporting of the Coronation itself.

From the Guardian online:

"PA media is carrying this report of another protester being stopped and searched by the police.
Ben Larsen, 25, wearing a Just Stop Oil T-shirt, said he was there to see the coronation and peacefully protest. Grinning at police officers, he told them: “You’ve searched me and haven’t found shit.”
A police officer told him: “You need to educate yourself on what peaceful protest is.”
Larsen told PA: “I wanted to see the coronation and peacefully protest on the sidelines, in a respectful manner.
“All we had was a Just Stop Oil t-shirt and an orange flag and that’s enough to be detained by the police and searched.”
He claimed that police found him using AI facial recognition cameras that they were trialling at the coronation.
Larsen said: “We saw a line of police in front, turned around, saw a line of police behind, they dragged me away, even though I said I didn’t want to go with them. They searched me, they found nothing on me.”
He added: “I’ve been told repeatedly that I’m being detained as long as it takes.”

If you are the Met and you are going to arrest the Head of Republic, you should really think about the consequences.

Given Republic had liaised with them for weeks, I doubt no one in the Met knew. If that's the case they are even worse than I thought.

limitedperiodonly · 06/05/2023 10:54

If I were one of those protesters I'd be content to be arrested especially in public view with news reports going round the world.

As a middle-aged white woman I do not have the same fears as a young black man when it comes to arrest and custody. If I was convicted of a public order offence, which wouldn't be guaranteed, it would have no effect on me apart from the fine, which I could probably afford. I wouldn't lose my job or come to the attention of social services.

So though they can't stay for the day, their protest and the police response to it has had an impact. The police response may well turn out to be unjustified as it has before. If so we can talk about it. But it's not like we live in a country where dissenters get Disappeared.

That is chilling to the bone. Thought crime.

I hadn’t realised quite what a dangerous and volatile this whole event would be. As anyone wanting to throw things could be hidden anywhere in the crowds, and there’ll probably be some rowdy drunks and fractious children it sounds rather as if the whole thing should have been called off and anyone keen could just watch it on tv. If mass panic and trampled babies are the likely outcome of anything unexpected happening is it really worth the risk?

You think police and military horses aren't used to think being thrown at or near them? Confused

Besides which, no one did, or said they would, or gave any indication they might, throw anything. Or do anything other than travel to the agreed place and do the thing that the police knew they were going to do there.

You've ever seen police orders for a big event then. Do you think every PC has details for every step of the route or are they briefed about where they are posted?

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 06/05/2023 10:58

If people who insist on attending this care for their children's safety that much, and think that they're so at risk then leave them at home. That's what you do if you care as much as you say you do.

However much you think this is an event for children, not everything is. You decide and stand by it.

Laiste · 06/05/2023 10:59

Yeah but i bet they imagined throwing things. I bet they had a van full of imagine. Imagine the stampede that would cause ....

They are not at all. Most people either support the monarchy or are indifferent to it. Vehement anti-monarchists are an absolutely tiny section of society.

You’re falling for the media spin if you think most people support it.

Maybe the police have ways of talking to each other before they make spurious arrests?
It's the leader of the main movement against the monarchy. Are you seriously saying the police on the streets today weren't aware of them?
