To think most women do all of the self care beauty routines I do.

Had this conversation with a friend today that seems to think I'm high maintenance. I get my nails done every month and eyebrows and a facial. I also fake tan once a week. Botox every 6 months and get my lips slightly fillled twice a year ( I have naturally thin lips)

I was under the impression most women do these things if you care about your appearance. AIBU to think this ?

No.
Most women I know have their hair done every two months.

Most women I know do their own nails and eyebrows though occasionally have brows and lashes dyed for a special event.
Some women I know have a light fake tan before their wedding.
I know one woman who has Botox to help with headaches.
I know of some women who have hair removal but most attend to that themselves too.

I have no friends who plump up their lips.
However, I know of many very young women plumping their lips (and all the young women in their teens and 20s in one particular family do this.) It looks unattractive to me and like they have painful, swollen lips about to break out in cold sores or that their lips are turning in-side-out really.

Does anyone else notice this trend - the urge to super size ones lips in an exaggerated cartoon fashion?

The over inflated lip trend had been waning for a while now. Like skinny jeans, there will always be die-hard late adopters of the change.

artificial tan
artificial eyebrows
artificial lips
artificial nails
artificial white teeth

But suuuuuuuuuure, you don’t look fake. Because nobody’s ever said so to your face

Artificial coloured hair, painted face - literally painted then more paint applied to eyes cheeks and lips. Sooooo artificial. So all women who wear makeup look fake do they? In all honesty, makeup and hair dye are leagues more fake looking and altering to the eye than good Botox and fillers but you carry on convincing yourself otherwise Petal.

Fourfurrymonsters · 05/05/2023 07:30

Nope. But then I don’t hang out with people that are more focussed on their outward appearance than their personalities. That last statement of yours is very telling, OP. Not really a friend to women are you?

Good grief, they’re really not. You think fillers and Botox can’t be spotted a mile off??

Tinkerbell1281 · 05/05/2023 07:33

Yes. Not the lips, but everything else- plus hair colour and treatments, skin peels, facials etc. quite normal for most people I know.

notacooldad · 05/05/2023 07:34

Do any of you injected people have hobbies? I can't see how filled lips and a clarinet or flute would work, for example. Changing your embouchure is hard
The women I know who have had their lips dome have a wide range of hobbies such running, hiking, keeping dogs, horses, crafting, playing drums, amateur dramatics
I don't know anyone that plays a clarinet or similar.

The only woman I know who does any of this is our Receptionist at work. Pretty much everyone thinks she looks ridiculous with the patterned gel nails, lash extensions, laminated eyebrows, lip filler and fake tan. Even more so because she earns so little to be spending so much on beauty treatments.

I doubt very much if 'pretty much everyone' thinks she's ridiculous, you mean you and some of your like minded, probably similar aged, and rather spiteful colleagues do. I'm sure if your employer did they'd think twice about having her front of house.
The look you describe is very popular amongst some young women and in their own social circles perfectly acceptable and admired. No doubt she would prefer not to look like you, but you rarely get this sort of offensive commentary from the other side.
There's something rather distasteful in imagining a group of senior women sneering about the appearance and discussing the finances of a junior colleague.

Some of these replies are so vile and judgemental, women really are disgusting to eachother aren't they. The comments about people they know in real life looking ridiculous or judging what they spend their money on, bitches.

To be fair, the OP’s opening post was in the same vein. Because clearly women aren’t enough on their own - they should be using all the shit and spending a ton of money to make sure they “care about their appearance”.

AutumnColours9 · 05/05/2023 00:21

I don't do any of that. Wear minimal make up and tie hair up. I don't have time nor money nor inclination for all that.

You sound consistent. What is desperately ironic are people who will literally paint their faces every morning and colour their hair decrying how fake other procedures are. The images shown here of excellent lip filler proves how natural it can look. Truth is, with judicious use of injectables, makeup os often much less needed but people want to believe that skin completely covered with Estée Lauder double wear, a rainbow of colours on their eyes, pink added to cheeks, bronzer to 'warm the face up' and bright red lips is somehow less artificial looking that the artful and subtle use of filler and Botox. Of course some people go both but many of us wear hardly any makeup because we don't feel the need. My morning routine takes minutes because I maintain my skin in such a way that I don't feel I have to. If people who wear zero makeup and leave their hair grey want to have a go about natural looking then go for it. Anyone else just comes across as deluded thinking their form of fakery doesn't count

midgemadgemodge · 05/05/2023 07:40

Hang on

We already have had the Botox approvers judging the wrinkles and thin lips of the untreated , judging that's all necessary for basic self care and to look good

So don't be surprised is sone people speak their minds also and think that it can all look stupid

CarpyDiem · 05/05/2023 07:40

It's the sort of regime I'd expect a Love Island participant to have

And can very easily end up looking over-done.

Maireas · 05/05/2023 07:40

It's fashionable, and if you have the time and disposable income, go for it. Most people don't, and a lot of people wouldn't, even if they did. Choice.
I remember when curly perms were very fashionable, and I kept my hair in it's natural poker straight state, I got a lot of comments. The only thing I would be careful of is the amount of sub dermal work, long term effects aren't completely known yet.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 05/05/2023 07:42

I don't even get my hair cut at the hairdressers Grin

Lots of people are projecting, OP didn't say that. I read the caring about their appearance as people who aren't arsed are unlikely to get these things done. There's been nastiness on both sides, it's depressing.

I was almost agreeing with you until you brought her earnings into it. Her finances are none of your business!

Arniesleftleg · 05/05/2023 07:45

YABU to think this. But fair play to you. I used to partake in lots of self care when I was single and had no kids but sadly they come first now.

NEmama · 05/05/2023 07:45

Only one I do is a facial. Couple per year.
I must look like a troll

DarrellRiversCriminalBehaviourOrder · 05/05/2023 07:46

midgemadgemodge · 05/05/2023 07:10

But I don't tend to think "oh she had think lips" or "oh she looked wrinkled and tired"

I think "ah there's my friend - what are you up to today or I must ask her about ...

Do the people who do all that stuff actually take note of how old they think I am looking ? Are they judging me on my appearance against some artificial standard ?

It seems rather unpleasant if they are

Yes yes, you never have any thoughts about how people look, you're far above all that, wide-eyed "oh my goodness, do people really have thoughts about how people look", etc etc. I might have known.

Yes, sorry to blow your mind, but people do indeed often have thoughts about how people look. Casting agents and actors depend upon it. The amount of criticism on here about how awful Botox and fillers look is further proof. I'm sorry to be the one to tell you, but honestly I thought you'd have noticed by now.

Starintheshow · 05/05/2023 07:47

I have my hair coloured twice a year.

Do my nails and eyebrows myself at home.

I use gradual tan a couple of times a week so not the full on fake tan but the moisturising tan, I'm very very fair skinned so it just stops me looking blue tinged!

I wear make up most days and cleanse and moisturise, shave legs, straighten hair.

That's about the extent of my regime I think.

EarthSight · 04/05/2023 22:39

@potatohead1 It's come from experience. For example, I once knew someone who was getting trout-pout/duck lip. She was only in her 20s. One day she was talking about her fillers at work as it was no secret as every time she has them done. She had that typical raised area just above the lip, you could really tell from her profile, and she had that habit I've noticed some women have which is to flick their tongue along their lips in a certain way.

A group of about 5 women were saying how natural they looked. They must have been blind.

So you have experience of people with obvious filled lips. What you don’t have is experience of every single people who has filled lips. Why is it so hard for people to accept that they don’t always know. You only know if a) you’ve been told or b) it’s obvious. Other than that you don’t have a clue. The example photos on this thread for example. Without being told you would not know unless you knew the person or were told. I know 2 people so there will be millions more in the world, with lips that look like they are filled. They are completely natural. But smug know it all’s will be congratulating themselves on knowing. SMH

And if you never have any thoughts about how people look...what drew you to this thread?

RampantIvy · 05/05/2023 07:47

Some of these posts are a bit "race to the bottom".
I care enough about the way I look to have my hair cut and coloured every 5-6 weeks, and wear minimal make up.

I am lucky enough to be blessed with dark eyebrows and dark eyelashes, and don't have thin lips, so no help needed there, but I draw the line at fillers and botox. As has been pointed out, the long term effects are not known.

potatohead1 · 05/05/2023 07:49

RampantIvy · 04/05/2023 22:52

I would associate the lip filler/fake tan with a younger demographic.

I think you are right. None of my friends will see 50 again. I think botox and lip fillers at my age (64) is tragic.

I do use a bit of facial fake tan in summer. It negates the need to wear tinted moisturiser.

So this is tragic? Wow. Ain’t you just peachy. One would have thought with age you would have developed some humility and kindness but apparently not. Now that is tragic

horseymum · 05/05/2023 07:49

I don't know anyone who does all these, and maybe one who does most of this. I remember to moisturise most days. That's my regime. Fine if it makes you happy though, I'm sure you don't need it though.

StoatofDisarray · 05/05/2023 07:50

I don't know anyone who does this.
