To think most women do all of the self care beauty routines I do.

Had this conversation with a friend today that seems to think I'm high maintenance. I get my nails done every month and eyebrows and a facial. I also fake tan once a week. Botox every 6 months and get my lips slightly fillled twice a year ( I have naturally thin lips)

I was under the impression most women do these things if you care about your appearance. AIBU to think this ?

I think they look great and more importantly so does the person whose lips they are and that’s all that matters

The uninjected lips look just as nice.
Her money though.

ImSoShiney · 04/05/2023 23:23

I care about my appearance so I shower, shave my legs pits and fanny and wash and brush my hair. Job done.

ChazNWave · 04/05/2023 23:24

Do any of you injected people have hobbies? I can't see how filled lips and a clarinet or flute would work, for example. Changing your embouchure is hard.

girlswillbegirls · 04/05/2023 23:25

Keeping fit, doing good exercise and eating good food. That's actually looking after yourself. Injecting a toxin to paralyse your face or that unnatural paint as fake tan etc doesn't registered as looking after your appearance

Notmyfandango · 04/05/2023 23:25

FrostyFifi · 04/05/2023 23:17

@Notmyfandango I agree that is subtle but also I don't think either picture looks better or worse than the other, to the point where I'd wonder what I actually paid for.

I wanted my lips to look hydrated and plump but not filled, I also wanted the lower lip to be a similar thickness to my upper lip. Not very one wants a trout pout. I don't see it any differently to someone applying lipstick every day. I just don't have to now.

FrostyFifi · 04/05/2023 23:25

I don't even remove my body hair a lot of the time. I worry about the wisdom of antiperspirant directly onto newly shaved skin for instance, and I definitely prefer coverage on my bits.

cleanse twice a day, moisturise twice a day, exfoliate once a week followed by a face mask. Deep condition hair once a week, keep my v fast growing finger nails short with a coat of nail strengthener on them as they are very weak and tear easily. In the summer I shave my legs, use fake tan, do a home pedicure and paint my toenails. Hardly bother with make up these days, used to love it but I am getting on now and it just does not suit me the way it used to. I always wear perfume, find that it lifts my spirits. Several friends do less than I do, some do more, none of us have ever had any "tweakments" or injectables. I just try and look clean and presentable! ,

Nails once a month and a facial, fake tan and botox/filler? I don't think that's particularly high maintenance.

It's weird that you think that women do these things 'if they care about their appearance.' Lots of women don't need or want botox, fake tan is well, fake tan. Loads of women really, really don't want filler in their lips.

I quite enjoy beauty and regimens. I use oils and massage for my face. I like several steps to my nighttime 'routine' as I find it calming. I file my nails and use cuticle oil and creams. I love nice products - Dr Hauschka is a favourite, and things that feel nourishing to me.

Your idea of what constitutes 'caring about your appearance' is a world away from mine. I wouldn't do any of your version.

Orders76 · 04/05/2023 23:29

I only ask as a lot of those I see keeping up with these, seem to be under a weight of 'expectations of women'. Be that looks, be nice etc.
If it's entirely for you and you don't mind the time and money that's different.

DecommissionedVag · 04/05/2023 23:29

You're very high maintenance in my opinion. The only appointment I attend is for a haircut every 2-3 months. I shape and paint my nails myself with clear polish 1-2 times per week, shape my own eyebrows and don't wear fake tan. I do look after my skin but don't go for facials and would never touch filler/botox. My friends are a similar level of beauty maintenance as me.

Catsmere · 04/05/2023 23:30

I’ve never done any of these things. “Caring about your appearance” doesn’t mean getting Botox and other painful procedures, for crying out aloud! I don’t know anyone who’s ever done more than getting her hair coloured and cut and one or two who may get artificial nails put on.

I can’t imagine spending so much time and money on doing such things, and for what? Trying to look like someone else, essentially.

Luredbyapomegranate · 04/05/2023 23:33

summerfinn · 04/05/2023 22:04

Exactly. I think a lot of women in Ireland get more done than they let on.

I have to say Dublin is the only place I have regularly encountered hair straighteners in the women’s loos.

summerfinn · 04/05/2023 21:02

Thanks . It's actually helps with my depression amongst other inner things.

My depression means I'm doing well if I brush my teeth twice in a day. It's often days between showers. I cannot stand the chemical smells in hairdressers so I cut my own hair twice per year.

I just could not even consider going to all the hassle you are putting yourself through.

And no, I think most women don't do all this stuff.

It’s the tiny things. That’s what makes the well done Hollywood stars look like they have been sprinkled in fairy dust. They look natural and yet they just look…better than mere mortals. It’s all in the detail. It’s when the tiny tweaks are made that the overall look is ‘refreshed’. But still natural.

Cakencookieobsessed · 04/05/2023 23:37

I thank god for the way he made me the way I am and that I don't need filler to look good.If you do then you should do whatever makes you feel confident. I have nothing against people who have it done and maybe one day in the future I might need it, but at the moment I prefer to look the way I do without having to make adjustments.

OP, the less you care about temporary false beauty the happier you'll become.

Fuck off all of these treatments, invest in some walking boots and get the fuck outside away from tv and the internet.

Most of these beautiful women you see aren't happy themselves and are trying to look like other women who aren't that happy either.

Go out and enjoy the fuck out of life. We're all going to be old and wrinkly in the end, and you're wasting time and money chasing a lie. Go hiking, jump in the sea, go to a theme park, bin your make up and buy some dungarees and birkenstocks. Not giving a shit is far more liberating than being pretend pretty will ever be.

I'm old and (a little bit) wrinkly.

I have my nails done and my hair cut and coloured.

Also pedicure and some waxing.

I also manage to get outside and walk too and have a pretty good social life as well as seeing lots of my family.

I'm perfectly happy

Anyotherdude · 04/05/2023 23:38

It’s not exactly “self care” if you’re not doing it yourself, though, is it? Botox, fillers, getting your nails, eyebrows and facials “done” at a salon is self-indulgence, rather than taking care of yourself. No problem if you can afford it, but I suspect most women “do” eyebrows, facials and manicures themselves - and it’s not necessary inferior to salons. Good skincare, including sun protection can also reduce the need for Botox and fillers, so yeah, I agree with your friend - you are “high maintenance“!

No we just sit all day being fanned by our slaves 🤷‍♀️😂 what kind of bloody question is that. How small minded are you.

Getig · 04/05/2023 23:38

I don't do any of these except botox, though I stopped when I was pg and haven't gone back yet. I cleanse daily, and use acids and serums and moisturisers, and wear sunscreen and make up daily. Shave less often than I should. I should probably get my eyebrows done professionally, I do them at home but it never looks quite right but it's a faff to sort out with a young baby.

I don't like the whole experience of having treatments done to me tbh, I don't even get my hair cut. Hate having people in my personal space.

Buttons232 · 04/05/2023 23:39

My “beauty” routine:

30 seconds smearing foundation in the vague direction of my face while driving my kids to school.

10 seconds licking the above foundation off my lips to stop me from looking like a corpse.

Occasionally shaving my legs ( badly) when taking my kids swimming.

That’s it.

I like sex. Not sure if that counts as a hobby. My subtly filled lips have no impact on my ability to administer a bj if that’s what you mean.
I also lift weights. Walk my dogs in the country side and volunteer at a charity. None of these activities is impeded by what I do to my face either.

defi · 04/05/2023 23:39

^^ I'm an avid hiker and wild swimmer. Also have fillers, Botox and microblading. Saves wearing make up

Pineapplejuicer · 04/05/2023 23:41

If you look at average salary in uk and that we are in a cost of living crisis it’s a pretty daft thing to assume most women could afford all this!

I do eyebrows and occasional nails / facial. I think it’s very hard for older women to achieve a natural, classy look with Botox and fillers so I wouldn’t go near them!

summerfinn · 04/05/2023 23:41

WeAreBorg · 04/05/2023 23:21

Here the pattern is:

Beautiful posh students - no regime whatsoever. Look grubby but amazing.

Young local women in low paid jobs - literally everything - fake tan/lips/hair the works.

Older posh women - thin, grey hair, fancy clothes, nice jewellery, short nude nails. Look amazing

Older local women - fat, insanely long nails with art. All blonde. Turkey teeth.

These are my observations only.

That's funny because I'm not particularly young(36) and probably have more money than most. So your judgements are in fact wrong.
