To think most women do all of the self care beauty routines I do.

Had this conversation with a friend today that seems to think I'm high maintenance. I get my nails done every month and eyebrows and a facial. I also fake tan once a week. Botox every 6 months and get my lips slightly fillled twice a year ( I have naturally thin lips)

I was under the impression most women do these things if you care about your appearance. AIBU to think this ?

Like several others on this thread, I know a few younger women (20s to 30s) who have lip fillers and botox. I'm 50 and see myself as reasonably low maintenance, a bit of mascara, sunscreen and lip balm and I'm out of the door! I do have my hair cut every six weeks though.

Plantymcplantface · 04/05/2023 22:52

nope.

cleanse and moisturise twice a day.
light makeup for work (3 products, 5 mins).
hair cut and colour very 6 weeks.
nails once a year for Christmas.

that’s it. I don’t think I look rubbish but maybe I do compared to the OP 😂

RampantIvy · 04/05/2023 22:52

I would associate the lip filler/fake tan with a younger demographic.

I think you are right. None of my friends will see 50 again. I think botox and lip fillers at my age (64) is tragic.

I do use a bit of facial fake tan in summer. It negates the need to wear tinted moisturiser.

Goodyetalso · 04/05/2023 22:52

I don’t do any of that. I dislike ‘done’ nails on me or anyone else so just keep them filed and natural with no polish or anything, I have naturally good brows so pouch the stray hair, can’t stand fake tan because of the smell so never do that, no botox or fillers. A facial is a nice occasional treat but I don’t have the time, inclination or money to have one more than once or twice a year. I care about my appearance but I prefer a more natural look.

Yes

You think a former Miss World isn’t beautiful, you reckon you look like her and you have somehow (despite having eyes in your head) failed to notice that the majority of women aren’t wandering around with fake tan, Botox and filler.

Alrighty, then. 😂

So if it's not noticeable, what's the point? I don't get when people say that. Surely you do it because you want to see a difference.

Because natural looking doesn’t mean it’s always natural. This woman looks way less harsh and judgemental with her subtle lip fillers. Perhaps a few of the nasty commenters in here would benefit

Eqs · 04/05/2023 22:53

@potatohead1 - surely a lot of the ‘improvement’ is make up - there’s way more being worn in photo 2.

notacooldad · 04/05/2023 22:54

I went extra on my appearance after seeing myself in a marks and spencer mirror. I looked like I was had been homeless for years.
I upped my game and now do the following:
I have my hair highlighted and trimmed every 7 weeks. I use decent products and have my hair just below shoulder length.
pedicure and gel toe nails as required
chin and lip thread once a fortnight and brows done and the same time, brows tinted every other visit.
teeth whitened as needed.
chiropractor maintenance appointment once every two months.
Learned how to apply make up that suits me and is on trend.
I also go to the gym, exercise outdoors, eat well and sleep good.
Regular skin routine.
Ive always worn a spf of 30 since I was young, all year round. Probably the best tip I got from Cosmopolitan magazine!

I’m 58 and it’s made a huge difference to my confidence. I look and feel better than I ever did in a long time.

Clarabe1 · 04/05/2023 22:54

Nope! I have my eyebrows done once a month and my hair cut and colored every 6 weeks. Nails for special occasions but otherwise they are kept short. I don’t like fake tan and I think lip fillers are hideous but each to their own!

stayflufft · 04/05/2023 22:54

I do none of this. I last got my hair cut over a year ago. I’ve never had filler, fake tan or a facial and I’ve also never had my nails done.

I don’t drink or smoke and wear SPF 50 every day. Works for me.

FrostyFifi · 04/05/2023 22:54

I don't do any of that and I find it depressing that it's considered some sort of a norm in some circles.
I'm clean, I use natural organic products. My teeth are well cared for and I see my dentist and hygienest twice a year. I eat no processed food and mostly organic. I exercie daily, mostly yoga and weights.

That's my idea of self-care, looking after my health for the long term.

Not getting various things stuck to me or injected into me.

Arketaddictmum · 04/05/2023 22:55

Be so careful OP:..I'm seeing horror stories in our local Waitrose.

You can see with your eyes that her lips are more full. She has makeup on in both photos. She just doesn’t look harsh with the fuller lips. No pencil thin lip. Point is, it’s very natural looking yes? People with no idea think everyone who gets fillers looks like a Kardashian or someone of towie. They don’t.

FrostyFifi · 04/05/2023 22:56

Totally different lighting as well. It's easy to shave ten years off your skin by just stepping out of harsh light.

1stTimeMama · 04/05/2023 22:56

I get my nails done once every now and again, with a massage or facial. Mainly if I have a voucher to spwnd. I wax everything myself when needed, but generally I barely have the time or energy to moisturise!

I know!! The lighting is also completely different.

The photos are taken on the same day before and after she’s had the procedure. If you are referring to the extra ‘blusher’. It’s not blusher. It’s redness from the cheek filler injections. The ones that are so natural that you thought it was makeup 🙄. Look again. Her cheeks are a little more full. Not as much sag. But clearly natural enough that someone who is desperate to believe all injectable are obvious didn’t notice

Oh dear God of you can’t see her lips are bigger then you really haven’t got eyes. All the lighting in the world doesn’t do that. And she has no more makeup. She has cheek filler redness.

Siameasy · 04/05/2023 23:00

None of that for me either. Late 40s. I paint my nails now and then. Pencil eyebrows in as there’s nowt left lol mascara and lip balm. I clicked on Merwave on FB and started embracing the natural wave in my hair so it’s even lower maintenance now.

anon199900 · 04/05/2023 23:01

These things are so popular and normal where I live - but I’m in an affluent area and I’m in my thirties.

I get my nails done every 2 weeks, brows every 5, colour my hair every 6 and I have just started having Botox.

I bet many of the people on here who don’t know people who get it done probably just don’t realise people get it done.

Eqs · 04/05/2023 23:01

she has NO lipstick on in pic 1…..a good slather in pic 2 (& that’s just the start)…..I’m good at ‘spot the difference’ puzzles…. I have spent waaaaay too much time on them in recent years😂🤣

Tigofigo · 04/05/2023 23:01

No - I couldn't justify the cost or time. I'd spend all my disposable income on it and have nothing left!

Not into gel nails or facials and would never touch my lips with injectables. I can ALWAYS tell if someone has had them done and too many bad jobs out there.

I do fake tan my face in the summer sometimes. It makes me look semi-alive. And I'd like more Botox.

I have a wide ranging group of friends between 30 and 50. Some have subtle Botox and/ or nails done. Others wouldn't dream of it. Generally where I live the "done" glam look is considered cringey and uncool whereas in other areas it is very in.

anon199900 · 04/05/2023 23:01

And those asking why… because it feels nice.

Oxbridgetitans · 04/05/2023 23:01

Yes most women I know get gel nails on hands and toes once a month and Botox every 6 months including myself, I don’t like facials personally but look after my skin with good products and I tan each week. Personally I like to look groomed and my best. Nothing wrong with that. I earn it.

Robinni · 04/05/2023 23:02

RampantIvy · 04/05/2023 22:48

Those of you who get nails done regularly - what are your own nails like?

I look after my nails, and have the occasional manicure for special occasions. My own nails are in good condition.

I get pedicures done in summer when my feet are on show. There is no point in having painted toenails in winter, and I think it is good for them not to be covered in nail varnish all year.

The only fake tans you see tound here is at prom time after GCSEs, but it is very unusul to see a lot of fake tanned people normally.

I just couldn't afford the time and the money to do what the OP does, but I do take care of myself by doing what I can myself. I epilate facial hair myself as well.

@RampantIvy nails are good actually but don’t have the time to do them myself.

Like the shellac because I find regular polish chips too easy (for me as I do a lot with hands) and I enjoy it especially in summer.

Toying with the idea of mani rest of year as well, but I need my nails short most of time so seems a bit pointless.

Anything I do is for me for enjoyment.
