To think most women do all of the self care beauty routines I do.

Had this conversation with a friend today that seems to think I'm high maintenance. I get my nails done every month and eyebrows and a facial. I also fake tan once a week. Botox every 6 months and get my lips slightly fillled twice a year ( I have naturally thin lips)

I was under the impression most women do these things if you care about your appearance. AIBU to think this ?

OP I'm in ireland too and this is very similar to what myself and majority of women I know would do. I get my nails done every month, eyebrows done when needed, wish I could afford to get a facial done more often than I do. I tan whenever I have a night out (or sometimes just to make myself feel better but don't have a ritual of doing it weekly). A lot of my friends would be in the same boat, some would also get lashes done. No botox or lip filler here, only know 3 of my friends get botox and 1 has lip filler. YANBU

Exactly. I think a lot of women in Ireland get more done than they let on.

U2HasTheEdge · 04/05/2023 22:04

I don't do all of that, no.

I no longer get my nails done, as they interfere with my ability to crochet.

I get my eyebrows done sporadically, mostly when my fringe has been cut a bit short. I always mean to get them done because they do make such a difference, but I am quite lazy.

Hair is dyed when the greys start curling at the roots (box dye). Fringe is often cut by my husband. No fake tan or fillers.

I look after my skin. I would love tear trough fillers and plan to get them when I have a bit more spare money.

Botox, tan and lip fillers do not interest me.

Urgsleepmoresleep · 04/05/2023 22:04

I get my hair cut and dyed every 8 weeks. My eyebrows shaped and tinted and my eyelashes ti it’s every 6 weeks. Occasional sheet mask

ModestMoon · 04/05/2023 22:05

I know very few women who have any of that, but none who have all of it. I don't do any of that stuff, nor do my friends.

EarringsandLipstick · 04/05/2023 22:05

I think the replies here must be because it's AIBU, not S&B.

When I read threads on S&B I feel positively unkempt, and the skincare routines leave mine in the ha'penny place!

I guarantee most replies on S&B would mirror OP's more closely.

Yabvu. And setting a bad example to children who see you as a role model. What's wrong with your skin lips and nails that you feel the need to spend this money? Nothing and I'd strongly bet you look better without all the fakery. Sounds more like self hate than self care to me.

Do you get your hair done? Why? Why not hack at it with kitchen shears when it’s in your eyes . Go to the gym? Waste of money. Just do more housework. Do you eat out? Frippery. Do you wear makeup? You shouldn’t. You should score your face with a Brillo pad and wear lard and be happy with what nature have you. I certainly hope you wear every item of clothing until it is rags before you buy new. Why waste your life on all this showy fakery. Setting a terrible example.

IWantRebeccasConfidence · 04/05/2023 22:05

Another vote for I do none of things. I don’t even wear makeup. My DH prefers me without it and I really like that about him,

frockhopper · 04/05/2023 22:06

“I don’t think I’m naturally beautiful but I do look like a former Miss World” Okay… 😂

I don’t like the fake look, and have yet to see long acrylic nails that look real so your style is not mine. Ditto fake tan. A woman who “cares about how she looks” to me is someone who dresses nicely and has learned to embrace their natural appearance rather than morphing into a real-life filter.

It can save time. Having your brows done regularly and your skin in to top condition means less daily maintenance and less makeup required. Same with subtle Botox and filler. I barely wear makeup now as I look fresh without. If I didn’t get my nails done I would have horrible unkempt peeling nails as they have always been rubbish.

I'm pushing 50. I genuinely have never had my brows done and don't do anything to them myself. I wash my face with water and use a cleanser maybe once every couple of months. I very rarely (like maybe 2-3 times a year) wear makeup and even then it's just a bit of foundation, lipstick and mascara.
Despite my advancing years I have very few wrinkles and am regularly mistaken for much younger than I am.

I wonder if my skin still looks young because I've never put it through all that?

@Wnfatt22

Yes, that's a fair point. I didn't take it as goady, more a genuine belief that most women did do a lot of these procedures / treatments.

I started getting my nails done a few years ago after I noticed my then-manager had hers done. She seemed so 'together' and more professional, even tho otherwise she didn't wear much make up / so much with hair.

Then I noticed everyone I saw eg school mums had them done.

I decided to it once & was hooked. I love the ritual, the colour, the end result. I feel polished & ready for work. My nails are short & I just have straight forward Shellac. In the pandemic I didn't exactly miss it - but then I was going nowhere & felt completely depressed throughout! I was straight back there when they reopened & I felt brilliant. To me, my nails are more than just 'nails'. It's a social interaction & a statement of self-care.

I find it hard to believe that the average person with vision can’t work out that the vast majority of women don’t do all these things, therefore i think the OP is on the wind up or is genuinely only looking at a certain type of person when they’re out in public (not trying to be arsey- I’m guilty of often looking around and finding people to be ‘jealous’ of because they’re slim & pretty!)

LeefPeeper · 04/05/2023 21:43

I don’t need to inject the same toxin as botulism in to my face to care about my appearance

I do. Amazing stuff.

EarringsandLipstick · 04/05/2023 22:08

I think a lot of women in Ireland get more done than they let on.

Not sure I agree with this.

As I say, I know women who do nothing at all, to those who have a lot of treatments, and those who do a lot at home.

I think Botox or fillers are still not widely done. No-one I know does, I'm 46, but I've heard women say they'd consider it in a few years.

Anyone I know is very upfront about what they do - why wouldn't they be?

HotPenguin · 04/05/2023 22:08

I've never done any of those things. But I do have a wash, clean my teeth and wipe my arse every day.

Dungaree · 04/05/2023 22:08

I have never done any of those things even once. I prefer the natural look. I don't think my friends do them either. I associate those treatments with old women trying to look glam.

blueshoes · 04/05/2023 22:09

Depends where you live I think. Certain areas of the country I've been to hospitals and no exaggeration, every single woman I saw had eyelash extensions, tan, lip fillers. Some with zero makeup on but all of them had had those treatments as a basic. I'm talking nurses, cleaners, receptionists, women serving in the canteen. I felt like a pigeon surrounded by parrots.

@Natty13 I am curious. Where is this?

kh123 · 04/05/2023 22:09

I think self-care is brushing your hair, having a shower everyday, brushing your teeth, wearing clean clothes

mustbemypluckyday · 04/05/2023 22:09

I care about my appearance as far as trying to look clean and reasonably tidy. I moisturize morning and evening, use lip balm daily, pluck stray hairs, dye my hair sporadically (but getting tired of that, so may finally let the greys run wild), and put on tinted mineral powder when I want to look my best.

I don't have the time or interest to stay on top of more than that, and I'd rather spend the money on something else! The older I get, the less I feel that I need to bother. I probably look my age (no-one looks shocked when they hear I'm in my mid 40s), but so what? It's better to accept reality than fight a losing battle, in my view. But to each their own!

EarringsandLipstick · 04/05/2023 22:09

The Botox & filler - perhaps.

But the nails, tan & facial - lots of women do this so maybe not the 'vast majority' but not a minority either.

kh123 · 04/05/2023 22:09

Yeah, see that's what I'd call basic hygiene 🤷🏻‍♀️

CoronationWombleSandwiches · 04/05/2023 22:10

Never done a single one of them and I am nearly 50. I wear make-up sometimes and dye my hair but that's the extent of my 'beauty routine'.

potatohead1 · 04/05/2023 22:10

towriteyoumustlive · 04/05/2023 20:39

I have my hair cut once a year, I wash my face in the shower and use moisturiser. I use BB cream and mascara for make up. I cut my nails and occasionally paint them if I have time.

I like the idea of a spray tan as they look quite good if not too many shades darker than natural skin colour. But it wouldn't be my first choice of activity if I had free time!

I would never consider botox or fillers. I've never seen any lip fillers that look nice - they just look like the person has eaten something and had an allergic reaction.

What's wrong with just looking like me?!?!

Always people saying injections always look obvious. They only look obvious when they look obvious. Obviously. When they look great they just look great. And people who have great subtle injections are doing it to not be obvious so they aren’t going around telling people. Obviously Because they want oriole to just think they look good without all the weird arse judgement I love it when people smugly say they always can tell only to fail spectacularly when shown examples and asked to pick out who has and who hasn’t

IsaacNewtonPoppleford · 04/05/2023 22:11

I'd prefer them to adopt basic hygiene practices

Oh my gosh yes. Now, I am not saying that this applies to the OP, or just to "well-maintained" women, or anything like that, but I did noticed a beautifully dressed, gorgeous looking woman with fabulous hair not washing her hands after evidently using the toilet (I had been in the next cubicle and just finished washing my hands when she came out - it's a very small women's loo) at the pub games evening last week. This is particularly yuck given that everyone is handling the games pieces. And it's not the first time recently I have observed this. She's just an acquaintance and otherwise pleasant but she won't be becoming a friend as I seriously can't be proper friends with people who don't have basic hygiene. And also take a very dim view of similar in the workplace.

THEDEACON · 04/05/2023 22:11

I have a file and polish every couple of months don't a d won't do the rest you are high maintenance and fake rather than care about your appearance

Confusion101 · 04/05/2023 22:11

I think some people think that those treatments will have you looking like a blown up Kim K, but in reality you can still look very natural having those few bits done. 😅

FWIW I get my nails done but keep them at a natural length. I just like to get them shaped and painted that won't chip! 😊

Defo agree with PP that having things like eyebrows done is a time saver. Saves sooo much time when I'm applying makeup.
