To think most women do all of the self care beauty routines I do.

Had this conversation with a friend today that seems to think I'm high maintenance. I get my nails done every month and eyebrows and a facial. I also fake tan once a week. Botox every 6 months and get my lips slightly fillled twice a year ( I have naturally thin lips)

I was under the impression most women do these things if you care about your appearance. AIBU to think this ?

OP, the less you care about temporary false beauty the happier you'll become.

Oh bollox!

Lots of things we do are 'temporary'. Going for coffee is 'temporary', once it's drink. Listening to music, ditto. And so on

Each of these choices makes OP feel better.

It's not to say she might not also enjoy walks or running, or all the other alternatives you provided.

Choosing one doesn't mean rejecting the other.

tappitytaptap · 04/05/2023 21:50

I have nails every 2-3 weeks, facial waxing once a month but no 'procedures' - would quite like botox but a bit scared of starting it!

Princessconsuelabananahammock9 · 04/05/2023 21:47

OP are American or Canadian?
These seem like very North American standards.
Beautiful in certain areas is definitely the Instagram tanned, lip filler look. So most women around you look similar?

I think OP could be Irish possibly?

ShandaLear · 04/05/2023 21:50

Wait, if you think all women who care about their appearance do all that stuff and we don’t do any of it, does that mean we are all naturally beautiful and so don’t need it or do you have bad eyesight? Surely you can tell when women have Botox and fuller and shellac nails and all the rest of it. It’s hardly invisible.

Luredbyapomegranate · 04/05/2023 21:50

OP, the less you care about temporary false beauty the happier you'll become.

Fuck off all of these treatments, invest in some walking boots and get the fuck outside away from tv and the internet.

Most of these beautiful women you see aren't happy themselves and are trying to look like other women who aren't that happy either.

Go out and enjoy the fuck out of life. We're all going to be old and wrinkly in the end, and you're wasting time and money chasing a lie. Go hiking, jump in the sea, go to a theme park, bin your make up and buy some dungarees and birkenstocks. Not giving a shit is far more liberating than being pretend pretty will ever be.

You know people are different right? A hike is a lot of people’s idea of hell (although I like them).

There’s nothing wrong with enjoying make up, and while I CBA these days jolly nails do brighten the day.

What a waste of money

Again, it's not a waste of money if a) the OP wants to do it & b) she can afford to.

How about we stop tearing other women down for their choices?

To be fair, I think the OP is getting ripped apart because she has (intentionally or not) come across as a judgmental dick by saying she assumed this is what the average woman who cares about her appearance does, therefore implying that those who don’t do all this don’t care 🤷🏼‍♀️ got my back up a little and I generally don’t give a shit!

Gingerwarthog · 04/05/2023 21:51

Do whatever makes you feel great OP.
Some of my friends have Botox, fillers and so on and it makes them feel confident.
Lots of my friends have their hair dyed, use fake tan and have their brows and lashes tinted.
I spend my cash on my swim membership and hair treatments because that makes me feel good.
Anything that makes you feel confident (and you can afford) is your choice.

Glitterblue · 04/05/2023 21:51

I do none of those and don’t know anyone who does them. At the most I’d get my nails done once in a blue moon. I thought you were going to say cleanse/tone/moisturise and a trim every 6 weeks 😂

MotherOfUnicorns4 · 04/05/2023 21:51

My DD has her eyelashes and nails done often. My BF has botox, nails and hair done, but not all the time. I don't do anything. I have naturally smooth skin, neat eyebrows and wear whatever hideous monstrosity I can throw together. I always look trendy with absolutely no effort and today I got two compliments! Happy days!

fairywhale · 04/05/2023 21:48

It's not normal to hate your appearance so much you feel the need to do this nor something to aspire to, it's a laughable look that screams a lack of self esteem and confidence.
Invest in therapy instead.

OP didn't say she hated her appearance.

LadyLapsang · 04/05/2023 21:52

What percentage of your salary do you spend on all this?

Ludlow2 · 04/05/2023 21:52

DNAwrangler · 04/05/2023 20:23

I do none of those things. I care about my appearance but instead focus on keeping fit, sleeping well and so forth.

Above is also.my self care.
With addition of trying to eat nutrional food and drink lots of water.

Indoorcatmum · 04/05/2023 21:53

I do most of those except tanning... But then I cut my own hair and don't dye it which saves a lot of money each year.

Most of the women I know have botox (less have filler).

I bought an LED lamp and taught myself to do BIAB at home which is insanely easy and also saves loads.

I also dye my own brows and lashes.

I wouldn't say your routine is high maintenance because I do a lot to myself, but I do it at home. I don't know if that's relevant :)

I am massively jealous of your monthly facials, but I do have a pretty pricey skincare routine and can't justify doing both.

I'm not wasting anything. I don't drink or go to pubs ect . So each to their own I guess.

You'll get better response on the style board than AIBU X

I think alcohol is a waste of money. Provides absolutely zero benefits to your body, yet no-one judges someone who enjoys a bottle of red on a Friday night in the same way they judge beauty treatments

Nails only from your list
once or twice a year I get brows done

Rockingcloggs · 04/05/2023 21:55

I use gradual tan everyday except Friday and Saturday to avoid looking like an umpah lumpah.

I wax my own eyebrows.

I have my own gel nail kit and do them once every 3 weeks.

I spend an absolute fortune on haircare from Look Fantastic every month.

I would have botox but have never got round to it.

But, based on the fact that I do care about my appearance, and the fact it looks horrific, I would never ever have lip fillers!

itsmylife7 · 04/05/2023 21:55

I've yet to see a "natural " looking pair of lips that have been pumped up.
Would you like to share a picture of just your lips OP ?

paradoxicalfrog · 04/05/2023 21:55

I do none of those things. I'd be interested to know how much it all costs.

Ohdofuckofdear · 04/05/2023 21:55

No,the only thing I do is get my eyebrows done as in waxed and shaped.

I'm lucky that I don't need fake tan because I have my lovely Daddy's colouring so generally look like I have a tan year round.
I don't get fillers or Botox but again I've been lucky thanks to my Mum and Dad's genetics full lips and pretty much everyone on both sides of the family have always looked younger than they are.

But I do have friends that get lots done and I know it's all down to how you feel in yourself but having known them for years I personally really don't think they need it but I know for alot of people it really does make them feel better in themselves so each to they're own I say.

A lot of people do judge someone who drinks a bottle of wine in one night - I've seen people call people alcoholics on here for that

Walkaround · 04/05/2023 21:55

Very high maintenance. Have looked up Rosanna Davison and she looks naturally pretty but with excessive and unnecessary quantities of makeup, excessively sculpted eyebrows, and unnaturally white teeth - ie clearly someone who does not accept natural beauty, even though she probably possesses it underneath all the fakery and amendments to her natural appearance. I don’t really like a look that looks like you spend hours getting yourself to look like that, it just seems like a waste of time to me if you were pretty before you started covering your real appearance up.

Ludlow2 · 04/05/2023 21:56

I have recently dyed my eyebrows at home.
Won't be regular thing though.
