To think most women do all of the self care beauty routines I do.

Had this conversation with a friend today that seems to think I'm high maintenance. I get my nails done every month and eyebrows and a facial. I also fake tan once a week. Botox every 6 months and get my lips slightly fillled twice a year ( I have naturally thin lips)

I was under the impression most women do these things if you care about your appearance. AIBU to think this ?

Non of the women I know do that much. Some do nails, some do fake tan I suspect a few do Botox. No one does any of these things so regularly and all are happy with not wearing makeup.

mondaytosunday · 04/05/2023 21:35

No don't know anyone who does all that! Nails maybe, snd I have a facial every other month (snd a pedi, but not fingernails) but not the Botox or filler! I know only one woman who tried Botox years ago as a one off.

Topseyt123 · 04/05/2023 21:35

I do absolutely none of that and don't know anyone who does

Honestly, who could be arsed with all of that farting about, unless you are called Samantha Brick from the Daily Fail.

HoppingPavlova · 04/05/2023 21:36

Nope, don’t know anyone who does this. I get waxed once a month (legs, underarms, eyebrows). That’s it. Slap on some moisturiser and lip balm at home.

summerfinn · 04/05/2023 21:36

bellinisurge · 04/05/2023 21:28

None of them. Even when I was younger. How did you manage in the pandemic?

Badly😂

OP posts:
Barnbrack · 04/05/2023 21:36

Yeah, no. I've started getting my eyebrows waxed and tinted every 6 weeks because I like having defined eyebrows and my natural brows are white blonde. That and 8 weekly cut and colour are me being extravagant.

BlackieGrey · 04/05/2023 21:36

Is this just a certain areas of the country thing?

EarringsandLipstick · 04/05/2023 21:36

@Quoronation thanks, that's interesting. I also am really pale. Hated it when younger. I am completely fine with it now, though I do throw on some gradual tanner so legs & arms aren't too white.

I only occasionally get a spray tan - did today in fact. I felt instantly healthier!

From time to time I try self-tanning. I do a lot of exercise & lots of the women are tanned. But I'm not great at it & hate the faff of it.

The overdone excessive tan I don't like at all

redskylight · 04/05/2023 21:37

God some of these comments are so nasty.

To be fair, If the OP didn't want people to respond in kind she shouldn't have posted such a goady OP. Anyone who says that people who care about their appearance do all the things that she does is basically inferring that people who don't do all that, don't care about their appearance.

I couldn't care less what beauty treatments OP wants to have. She doesn't have to make passive aggressive digs at other people. It actually screams of insecurity. If she's happy in her choices, then she should just get on with them.

ChaToilLeam · 04/05/2023 21:37

Yes, this is pretty high maintenance. I am 52 and do none of the things on your list. Just get my hair cut a few times a year. I can assure you I don’t resemble a scarecrow, however.

You’re only 36, it all sounds a bit unnecessary.

I care about my appearance but I am pale and like my skin pale so no I don't use fake tan, think it looks horrible
I also think acrylic nails look awful. I do mine myself and they look nice.
So... caring about your appearance and what you think looks good means different things to different people. Why would you assume that someone would only care about their appearance if they did the same things as you?

ItsCalledAConversation · 04/05/2023 21:37

None of the women I know well do any of that and most of them care to some degree about their appearance. How you put lip fillers into a “self care routine” baffles me. Self care for me is bubble baths, a book, yoga, nature. I guess we are all different!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 04/05/2023 21:38

I've never done any of those things. I'm 52.

aintnospringchicken · 04/05/2023 21:38

I get my hair cut every 10 weeks and my nails done if I've got a special occasion coming up like a wedding. That's it. I would never get Botox or lip fillers.

Itsokay2020 · 04/05/2023 21:38

No, I don’t any of these either but I do have a good skincare routine and don’t feel the need for facials, I look after my own nails and do a lot of exercise. I drink plenty of water, sleep well and eat healthily. I hope to never need/want Botox and/or fillers. I do get my hair cut every 10-12 weeks. I know have one friend who has fillers and Botox, she’s also 16 years younger than me!

Necrotic · 04/05/2023 21:38

Who can be arsed with all that shit? I’ve got better things to be doing personally

Isitthathardtobekind · 04/05/2023 21:39

I sometimes get my nails done but can’t justify the expense at the moment. I put my own tan on sometimes if I’m going out or just want a glow. I’d like to get my hair colour done more frequently but I have so many other things to pay for for my children etc so I don’t. Personally I don’t like the look of lip fillers so wouldn’t get those.

ChokeToDeathOnThreePoundsOfMeat · 04/05/2023 21:39

I get botox every 3-4 months (for migraines - it does sod all for wrinkles!) Other than that I do none of those. I got my hair cut last week for the first time since before the start of the pandemic. I do IPL my legs & use a microcurrent device on my face in the evenings (prevention against saggy jowls). No makeup, no nails, I've never sunbathed or used fake tan in my life.

I do use SPF50 & wear wide brimmed hats religiously. And do a proper skincare routine. Acid toners, hydration, good moisturiser, etc.

isitshe · 04/05/2023 21:39

summerfinn · 04/05/2023 20:54

I can assure you I don't look plastic , everything is done naturally.

When you say 'everything is done naturally' it does seem goady.
How can your treatments including injectable synthetic fillers be done naturally or considered natural in any way, shape or form? You quite literally and correctly said FAKE tan in your OP. Making changes naturally would be through exercise for example. There's nothing natural about fake tan, fake nails and lip fillers. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that stuff per se (it's not for me) but call it what it is. Fake.

summerfinn · 04/05/2023 21:39

TheCatterall · 04/05/2023 21:30

@summerfinn so you have depression and you do this to make yourself feel better. That’s lovely that you have the time, energy and finances to do this.

What isn’t so nice was your sweeping generalisation to all other women that don’t do this as a norm - “was under the impression most women do these things if you care about your appearance. “

I care about my appearance but I work all the hours, volunteer with a local charity, care for my adult son and manage a social life and relationship. I don’t have the time, energy or money for anything other than a 6 weekly hair cut and highlights. Please don’t judge other women by your beauty standards.

And in the same vein - I’m sorry for some of the comments you are getting.

My perception is probably warped. I do therapy also. I'm not saying this is something most do but I just see most other women as beautiful and I just guessed they must have to put as much effort as I do into it. Maybe most women are just naturally beautiful. Lucky

I agree. What a waste of money

Redandyellowelephant · 04/05/2023 21:40

I'd like to be able to do some of the things on your list but just don't have the time and more specifically money! But I don't think its that common amongst my friends and ladies I know.

I'm not able to have my nails done due to my job so there would be no point wasting money on it to have to take it off again. I sort of really like my paleness too so wouldn't fake tan and I'm too young to need botox I think? The only thing on your list I'd do regularly if I had the money is my eyebrows as I hate doing them myself.

Goatinthegarden · 04/05/2023 21:41

Stravaig · 04/05/2023 21:23

I was under the impression most women do these things if you care about your appearance.

I'm more of a 'work from the inside out' person.

Eat healthy food, mostly plants. Drink lots of plain water. Get plenty of rest and sleep. Exercise, preferally in the fresh air, ideally something you enjoy. Make time for hobbies and activities you love. Cultivate new skills. Have a good support network, be it friends, family, therapy, time in nature.

Only then look in a mirror.

If you still don't like what you see, review your social/media consumption and friendship circle for an unhealthy preoccupation with appearance. Make adjustments.

You should glow with health and self love when you next accidentally catch a glimpse of yourself! (That's the idea, anyway :)

Can’t you do both?

I have a fulfilling job (primary teacher), a close family (no children) and some lovely friends. I spend most of my leisure time climbing mountains, cycling and trail running. I cook from scratch every day, eat plenty of nutritious food, work out frequently, sleep fantastically and jump out of bed early every day. I have musical and artistic hobbies.

I also like having frequent haircuts and nail appointments. I’m not a vacuous, empty shell just because I enjoy being preened by a professional.

eurochick · 04/05/2023 21:41

I know one person who had some Botox on her forehead in mid-40s. My nanny gets gel nails done occasionally and my cleaner always has acrylics. None of my friends get regular manicures. I don't know anyone who does all of the stuff you list regularly.

I don't live in England 😂
