To think most women do all of the self care beauty routines I do.

Had this conversation with a friend today that seems to think I'm high maintenance. I get my nails done every month and eyebrows and a facial. I also fake tan once a week. Botox every 6 months and get my lips slightly fillled twice a year ( I have naturally thin lips)

I was under the impression most women do these things if you care about your appearance. AIBU to think this ?

Never had any of those things done.

I wouldn't get filler especially. The idea sounds promising, but I'm sorry, no they don't look natural no matter much people humour you. The product doesn't stay put in one place either. It eventually migrates higher and higher and you will eventually look unnatural even if you didn't start out that way.

TomeTome · 04/05/2023 21:13

@summerfinn i meant “wasted” as in its burnt money you enjoy the feeling/look but it doesn’t give you anything beyond that. I don’t drink/pub either but obviously waste money on the things I like. I think that’s a hefty sum you’re spending without much gain though.

LeilaDarling · 04/05/2023 21:13

Blow dry every week, nails every 3 weeks, massage once a month, make up 5 days a week, now you’ve got me wondering if I’m high maintenance?! Haha 😂

babyproblems · 04/05/2023 21:13

I do the fake tan and I used to do the nails. A few friends do Botox but I would agree it’s quite high maintenance tbh! I’ve considered lip filler but too scared to actually do it… I wouldn’t want much anyway so a good lipliner isn’t far off the look I’d like. I dont do the nails anymore as I’m mid house renovation so they just get trashed!

Augend23 · 04/05/2023 21:13

So I would say I am very low maintenance:

I get a friend to cut my hair maybe 2-3 times a year.

I pluck my eyebrows similarly, maybe 2-3 times a year.

I do tan but only by virtue of going outside in the summer.

I sometimes paint my toenails in the summer.

I don't wear any make up day to day but I'm lucky that I have very clear skin etc. I have now started using moisturiser some days in winter.

So to answer what you do - it's a no from me on each and every count I think.

Funnily enough I have managed to hold down a professional job for the best part of 30 years without ever having had my legs waxed or my feet scraped. Then again, it wasn't on the job description.

I'll raise you

Held down a decent job
And a happy marriage

Can someone explain what " getting your nails done," means ? Are all the women who say they do this, wearing falsies and nail varnish all the time ? At work (where surely you have to type?) whilst caring for young children, while cooking? It just seems both totally impractical and unhygienic to me. I am frankly amazed at the number of women saying they do this regularly.

I get acrylic nails. So extensions, I like having long nails but my natural one break after a certain point.

But I think she might want to treat herself to a pedi now and then

But she doesn't want to and you judging her is horrible.

I don't get pedis either. I do get my horrible running-afflicted toes Shellac'd through summer, and I use the occasional foot scrub and hard skin remover thing.

It's all about individual choice. I'd hate to think a friend looked at any aspect of me & judged me like that.

Have we had the "Women who don't do these things are jealous of women who do" posts yet?

Yep, earlier in the thread.

Hair cut and coloured every 6 weeks

Fringe trimmed and blow dry every 2 weeks

Nails done every 2 weeks

Leg wax/bikini wax every 3 months

Facial every month

Have professional job and need to look the part

How does that relate to a bikini wax? Or what do you mean with "professional"?

Do you show them your bikini line? 😆

ODFOx · 04/05/2023 21:16

I care about my appearance to the extent where I look clean and groomed.
I have short hair and have it cut every 5 weeks.
I use spf moisturiser daily and exfoliate then use a night mask weekly or fortnightly depending how busy I am.
Fake tan, fillers, Botox and all that type of thing which removes individuality isn't something that most of my generation ( at least in the UK) dabbles with.
My DDs (18-26) won't do Botox or fillers but enjoy false eyelashes, tan (1/4), and make up which goes on blobs or stripes and looks like they've been airbrushed. I am in awe at the techniques!
But to answer your question OP, my experience is no, most women do not undergo the frequency of procedures that you have listed.
What do you do for a living that you need that kind of image??

I get my nails done every two weeks, hair done probably every 8 weeks.
eyebrows when I can be bothered but I have had my eyebrows tattooed and lip blush tattoo too. This needs topping up yearly.
don’t need Botox yet, have profhilo every 6 months. No filler.
use tan drops every other night in my moisturiser. Can’t be arsed full body tanning unless I’m going out.

BansheeofInisherin · 04/05/2023 21:16

Beezknees · 04/05/2023 21:14

Yep, earlier in the thread.

😁That's standard on MN. Women who don't want Botox or fillers always look rough and are seething with jealousy.

summerfinn · 04/05/2023 21:16

ShowUs · 04/05/2023 20:47

It depends.

Would you say you are naturally less attractive than most?

If so, then I can see why you need to make more of an effort.

I do my eyebrows and nails once a week.
I moisturise and take care of myself but I don’t pay someone else to do it.

I do my hair and make up most days.
I look fine without make up and my hair done but I find it improves my MH if I ‘get ready for the day’.

I know some women who don’t do any sort of extra work and look absolutely fabulous and it would be a bit pointless if they did.

I’ll probably never get Botox.
I’m really surprised that you need Botox when you’re so young, does it actually make a difference?

I kinda look like a darker haired Rosanna Davison but not as thin. I don't think she's naturally stunning but with the tan hair nails ect then maybe . So I guess put me in this category. I don't consider myself naturally beautiful.

I don't agree with fake tan

What do you mean you 'don't agree with it'?

For you? Fine. For anyone else, your opinion is irrelevant.

I only very occasionally have a spray tan. I'm rubbish at proper fake tan but I use gradual tanner to stop myself looking sickly white. I love well-applied & natural looking fake tan on others.

Verbena17 · 04/05/2023 21:17

My daily skin routine ….
-Get up and wash face in the shower with shower gel.
-Moisturise with a bit of Nivea Soft.
-Make up - whack a bit of Rimmel foundation (red) under eyes and on chin, no powder, put blusher on, mascara…..done.

-Bedtime - wash face with anti bacterial hand wash and /or baby wipes (sensitive) , to remove make up.
-Nivea Soft to moisturise.

Thats all I do - ever!

Don’t do my nails - except bite them.
Don’t colour my hair - get it trimmed maybe once or twice a year.
Don’t get manicures/pedi’s or anything like that in a salon.
Have never used or had a fake tan.
I cannot imagine having a fake tan weekly!

Comedycook · 04/05/2023 21:17

I get my eyebrows done...got them done today actually. I used to fake tan a lot but haven't for ages. I probably will in summer. I do my own nails. I've never had a facial. I'm scared of fillers and botox.

Okunevo · 04/05/2023 21:17

I do none of those things and most of the women I know do not appear to have these things done or mention them. I doubt it is most women, most could not afford that due to low income or high bills, there is a cost of living crisis.

MathsNervous · 04/05/2023 21:17

Nope. Don't do any of these.

ConstanceReid · 04/05/2023 21:17

I have a facial every 4 weeks and Botox every 9 months or so. That’s it though.

Hardly any of my friends get Botox, nor facials. Lots of them get their eyebrows done and gel nails.

mindutopia · 04/05/2023 21:17

I get a facial maybe once a year when I have a massage. I had my nails done the day before my wedding 12 years ago. Never had any of the rest of that done in my life.

Susan2 · 04/05/2023 21:17

Fake tan! No no no.

ActDottie · 04/05/2023 21:17

I don’t do any of this. I have the occasional facial though if I do a spa day.
