To think most women do all of the self care beauty routines I do.

Had this conversation with a friend today that seems to think I'm high maintenance. I get my nails done every month and eyebrows and a facial. I also fake tan once a week. Botox every 6 months and get my lips slightly fillled twice a year ( I have naturally thin lips)

I was under the impression most women do these things if you care about your appearance. AIBU to think this ?

I don't consider myself beautiful. I'm 5ft 9 and a size 14 so probably not conveniently beautiful. I just do this to feel okay I guess.

That’s the point, a lot of us think it’s a shame that some women feel the need to go to these lengths just so they feel okay about themselves.

Wishona · 04/05/2023 20:59

No fillers or botox
No make up at least half the time

I do use nice skincare every night, would rather spend on that than a facial.
Sun protection every day
Floss teeth every day
1 or 2 hours of exercise every day

Waxing every month
Gel toenails every 2 months
Hair done every 2 months

Paint my own fingernails every week for a few weeks, then get bored and leave for a few weeks

Fake tan when I can be bothered

Not sure if that makes me low or high maintenance. Maybe average.

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 04/05/2023 20:59

It does seem very high maintenance to me, yes. But you do you. Do what makes you happy. But it does seem completely unnecessary to me.

Mumz0612 · 04/05/2023 21:00

Nope don’t do any of those and never will, only thing I do is dye my own hair

HaggisBurger · 04/05/2023 21:00

I do all those things - nails and Botox more often. Pedis once every 8 weeks. But not facials. Top class extensions every 12 weeks. But I’m not under any illusion though that “most” women do this. That’s bonkers. Unless you live in a WAG enclave or similar.

mast0650 · 04/05/2023 21:00

I have never had any of those things done. Ever. Actually no, I have had my nails professional painted a couple of times (not gel or anything) and I think I might have had a facial once or twice? I am 51. I know I am quite low maintenance, but I would definitely say you are high maintenance! Most of my friends never do those things either.

I do care about my appearance to a certain extent. I enjoy nice clothes and a bit of make up from time to time. But it isn't a priority and I'm happy to basically age naturally.

Jellykat · 04/05/2023 21:00

I dont know anyone who does all of that, however you do whatever makes you feel good.
Personally i've always done it all myself (bar botox, but i'm not into that) saves me a whole lot of money!

DaaamnYoullDo · 04/05/2023 21:00

YABU I thought you were going to say like moisturise and shave. I get none of that.

ohfook · 04/05/2023 21:00

I think it depends on your age. I go through phases of caring about my appearance meaning I exercise regularly, get sufficient sleep, eat well and have a skincare routine going.

The women I work with who are about 15 years younger than me are more similar to you I would say.

ShowUs · 04/05/2023 21:01

I don't even take my makeup off at the end of the day 😅

@BadNomad

I’ve never reported a poster before but I think I might have to as this is one of the most offensive things I’ve ever read!!
🤣🤣

I have to take mine off as soon as I get home!

MayThe4th · 04/05/2023 21:01

Botox and lip fillers are going to be the scandal of ten/twenty years time. Women pumping all these chemicals into their bodies - it’s only a matter of time before it becomes apparent just how damaging it all is.

Aside from that women who have Botox look so fake it’s actually sad.

SparklyTwinkleGlitter · 04/05/2023 21:01

Aside from one friend who gets her nails done occasionally, I don’t know anyone else that wastes money on unnecessary stuff like that.

Also, I’d be wary about the long term effects of these procedures on your body. I tried Gel nails and was allergic to them.

AlltheFs · 04/05/2023 20:33

No. I don’t and none of my friends do either. That sort of false look isn’t part of our set.

If you like it that’s absolutely fine, but it’s certainly not that commonplace.

I don't look false. Not one person noticed my Botox or lip filler. It's very natural, including my tan.

I'd love your routine, worth it if it makes you feel happy. Fake tan and a touch of botox makes me feel much fresher looking. I think more people get botox than would actually admit, and probably a lot of the friends of posters have it but keep quiet for fear of judgement.

summerfinn · 04/05/2023 21:02

FreddiesTeeth · 04/05/2023 20:33

Nope.
I dye my own eyebrows and get a haircut every 2 months but that's it from your list.
You do you though and fuck what anyone else thinks about it.

Thanks . It's actually helps with my depression amongst other inner things.

Lol.

BonjourCrisette · 04/05/2023 21:02

I don't do most of those things and have never had a single one of them done professionally. I guess I could afford the money so it's not that, I've just never felt the need. I very occasionally paint my own nails or put a bit of fake tan on my legs.

Greenfree · 04/05/2023 21:03

I don't pay to have that many things done but probs do a lot of self care. So I do my own nails/pedicure, face mask and eyebrows once a week. Then I cleanse, apply serum, moisturise and wear make up everyday. I also make sure I apply body lotion every day. The one thing I pay for every four weeks is a Hollywood wax.

I think as long as people have a routine that makes them feel happy and confident then no one should judge.

HaggisBurger · 04/05/2023 21:03

I was horrified though when a friend (attractive, looks after herself, well paid job) said she’d never had a pedicure. I mean I get some people don’t do them regularly … but never!!!
Then I looked at her heels and saw that she had indeed never been anywhere near a hard skin removing device 😜

Truestorypeeps · 04/05/2023 21:03

My DW doesn't do any of that stuff either or wear make up. She is naturally beautiful though, so maybe that has something to do with not needing to spend ages in the bathroom.

Everyone can see fake tan a mile off and you're sincerely better off looking natural, even if you are pale!

Londontown12 · 04/05/2023 21:03

I have HD brows or sculpt brows every 4 weeks
Nails every 4 weeks
And hair cut every 7 weeks I have French Bob and colour when it needs doing !
Im pale and love it so no spray tans and I don’t wanna do anything to face with anything cus I don’t mind ageing tbh x

redskylight · 04/05/2023 21:03

I don't think I know a single woman who does any of those things apart from having their nails done (and then it would be occasionally, and not every month).

I don't think it's what women do who care about their appearance.
I think it's what women do when they care about looking a certain way that they think is attractive.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 04/05/2023 21:03

Neurodiversitydoctor · 04/05/2023 20:47

Can someone explain what " getting your nails done," means ? Are all the women who say they do this, wearing falsies and nail varnish all the time ? At work (where surely you have to type?) whilst caring for young children, while cooking? It just seems both totally impractical and unhygienic to me. I am frankly amazed at the number of women saying they do this regularly.

I always wonder about the hygiene thing. Very long nails suggest that the owner doesn't do much proper cooking, or hands on childcare, or cleaning, so maybe it's a status symbol?! I always think of WAGs having people to do all that for them. I mean, changing a pooey nappy, including applying nappy rash cream etc. Surely half of that would end up down your nails? And how would disposable gloves work with long nails? And how many pairs of tights would you ladder when you put them on? Even eating certain foods. Peeling a plate of garlic prawns?! Just no.

wistfullyfocused · 04/05/2023 21:03

It's an example of people keep their own company.

We were talking about a group of women we know and we call them The Shiney's

They are all glam and I expect they all do the list of treatments that you describe. I'd not be surprised if they refer to us as The Fat Friends. We do none of those things. We all go on a sporting holiday together and I think I'm the only one with a mascara with us. I've never had my nails done, my eyebrows done (I pluck them myself), fake tan for my wedding day. Couldn't be bothered with all that nonsense.
