To wish it was seen as the most beautiful thing ever to be super overweight

Okay I know I am being because health but I am sat here really bloody hungry because I need to lose weight and I've had my morning 300 cals and it's just miserable. Heroin chic thin was in and I feel like if a BMI of 26/27/28 was seen as the pinnacle of beauty life would be lovely and I could eat what I wanted. Eating delicious food is such a source of joy and life would just be so much better if it was without guilt.

Don't worry, I know this isn't sensible realistically (even though we're potentially going that way) just dreaming because I really really want something delicious and filling for my lunch and I can't have it.

@Jourdain11

Where have I said that?

Bmi is a tool used to assess the risk of weight on health.

Being under weight carries a bigger risk of ill health than being over weight

Being obese carries a bigger risk of ill health than being over weight

You can also be a healthy weight but not healthy

Jourdain11 · 30/04/2023 20:06

Maybe I misconstrued - but I thought you said being underweight was definitely unhealthy whereas being overweight wasn't. And that I absolutely was unhealthy. Sorry if I misunderstood, though!

Botw1 · 30/04/2023 20:13

@Jourdain11

I said being underweight isn't healthy. And neither is being over weight

Although tbf I do think its more about risk than actual ill health

The further outside the healthy range the higher the risk.

But there are also other indicators of health

ArianahX · 30/04/2023 20:16

OP my BMI is 30 so you're lucky yours is so low! It's all relative.

ScratchingMyHead · 30/04/2023 21:03

Whilst I know people can struggle at all weights, and when I was very underweight I endured awful comments, I think in today’s UK society, overweight people face more criticism. And I know far more women struggling being overweight.

So I do think you need to be sensitive on this topic, and saying you are ‘super overweight’ with a BMI of 25.5 is a bit goady and provocative.

Like where? I need to go there on holiday Grin

Middle East, southern Asia (eg India, Bangladesh), africa, South America, pacific islands. Broadly speaking! Basically, it's just Europe (and its white majority ex colonies eg USA, canada, australia, NZ) and southeast Asia, China, japan etc that have an issue against women being fat.

Hairday · 01/05/2023 00:46

Personally, I feel that this issue against fat has really become obsessive in our culture. Way beyond a reasonable concern. Almost an addiction or a fetish. Like foot binding, or those rib crushing corsets of the past. It shouldn't be that dieting and weight issues take over a woman's life beyond everything else.

What some of these are into is curvy. Chubby a bit. There is difference between fuller figure and fat. Considering ME is having issues with obesity due to rising poverty and job losses etc and they talk about it being issue, I don't think they are overall particularly into fat people....
But they are into fuller figures.

And it's not whole Europe. Slavic women are mostly naturally curvy and fuller, not skinny, and locals are usually enjoying that.

Interestingly, it's not just us😳 eating disorders in men absolutely skyrocketed wuth new cases catcing up to women new cases. If that makes sense. There is very much push on men too. Insta is full if half naked chefs, workouts, perfect men bodies, I would say on very similar level to women's levels now. My algorithm got fucked because i searched for something and now I am seeing these🤦 i miss my cat vids

Gwenhwyfar · 01/05/2023 10:19

"What some of these are into is curvy. Chubby a bit. "

Maybe some of those countries, but in others it really is 'the bigger the better'. However, as a country becomes richer they may start to have the western problem of obesity actually being more common in poorer people than richer and then I suppose what is considered desirable would also change. I heard about this happening in South Africa for example.

Gwenhwyfar · 01/05/2023 10:21

"saying you are ‘super overweight’ with a BMI of 25.5 is a bit goady and provocative."

OP didn't say that though.

Jourdain11 · 01/05/2023 11:18

But a lot of countries, like Mexico and Peruor Pacific Island nations, have big issues with obesity and related diseases in the population. So I doubt that being bigger is particularly seen as desirable in the context of this. It might have been the case 40 years ago, but less so now.

Do you not think it was inferred?

updin · 01/05/2023 11:33

@ScratchingMyHead not necessarily, could mean she wants to eat more and have the freedom to get to a bigger BMI without worrying about people's negative opinions.

Hubblebubble · 01/05/2023 12:45

Why not make your aim to be strong OP? That way you can eats loads more protein and good fats (think chicken, salmon, nuts, avocados) and get a lovely physique.

Mirabai · 01/05/2023 12:50

Not really true. You’d have to be severely underweight to be at risk of malnutrition, osteoporosis, lowered immunity. Whereas you don’t have to be that much overweight to have increased risk of diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease - particularly if your weight is carried around the middle. Indeed you can carry fat around your organs without even looking overweight.

mrlistersgelfbride · 01/05/2023 13:05

Sounds like OP was just a bit hangry. Post is a bit offensive due to how the title is worded. I do know where you are coming from.

I struggle with caloric deficits too. 1800 to me isn't that much, which is what I need to do to loose weight. I'm always hungry.
Download myfitnesspal if you haven't already, and add your exercise. This calculates excess calories you have burned and will allow a few extra treats, and you can still stay within your deficit.
Sounds obvious but reduce very calorific fatty foods like cheese and chocolate. You can still have foods you like, it's about subtle changes and portion control.
You are by no means very overweight. BMI doesn't account for build. My partner's BMI is 30 but he's over 6 foot and you'd never know it to look at him.
Good luck, you can do this!

Nope. I think some large people were a bit triggered and didn't read the post properly. OP knows she's only slightly overweight and she never claimed otherwise.

Yes, I think you can also have both 'beliefs' eg ordinary people still thinking 'big is beautiful' but doctors warning about the risks.

updin · 01/05/2023 15:24

Health and beauty "ideals" don't always go hand in hand, just look at tanning.

Crikeyalmighty · 01/05/2023 15:28

@Gwenhwyfar she could have been a bit more sensitive with her header though! It implied she was super overweight

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 01/05/2023 18:26

weeducky · 30/04/2023 12:09

My BMI is 25.5. Usually I'm at about 22 and still feel miserable but gained weight due to a considerably shit year causing insane stress. For me it's 100% about looks. I know it shouldn't be, but growing up with Cosmopolitan and 'fat' Bridget Jones will do that to you.

Depending on your body shape and age it can be perfectly healthy to be in the slightly overweight bracket - are you a pear or apple shape OP - as it's about your waist measurement .

If this is just vanity it's up to you but seems absurd to be making yourself miserable when you are only very slightly overweight.

Oh come on, anyone who is markedly under or overweight has a heightened risk of certain things. By 'the underweight' you're referring to someone who is quite a fair bit underweight vs someone who is slightly overweight, that's hardly a fair comparison. Reality is whatever whataboutery is mentioned being overweight puts extra strain on your body and organs, and heightens the risk of some dangerous conditions. Just because someone who is essentially malnourished (as would be the case to have heightened risk of a heart attack) might also face health problems that doesn't make being fat any healthier or improve that person's health outcomes.
