According to BBC news: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-65435426

There are hopes that people will say out loud: "I swear that I will pay true allegiance to Your Majesty, and to your heirs and successors according to law. So help me God."

The Archbishop of Canterbury will then proclaim "God save the King", with all asked to respond: "God save King Charles. Long live King Charles. May the King live forever."

This is surely madness. Asking everyone in the Abbey - sure. People crowding nearby might be swayed to say "Hail the King" or something similarly short. But hoping for video footage of crowds in parks and pubs shouting a great long sentence that most don't fully buy into, then doing it again and with "live forever"! Does Charles really think he's liked that much? Is he? It doesn't seem very British at all, and seems destined to be a mess of people saying random stuff loudly.

The new photos were taken in the Blue Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace

Coronation: Public asked to swear allegiance to King Charles

The pledge is among several changes to the service, which will incorporate female clergy and other faiths.

Well, we have smart phones, smart TVs, smart cities with recording and cctvs in plenty of places, so if you don't pledge, The Man (it's always a man) will know. Watch out! ( This is a joke trigger warning )

Sadly a number of young people believe there will be mass executions due to the climate crisis, some transgender people believe they are all going to be slaughtered and some right wingers believe large numbers of white people will be replaced by black people.
Oh the insanity!

Brrrrrrrrrrrr · 30/04/2023 08:35

I think you’ll be surprised at just how many will say it OP.

I agree - I am always surprised by how excited people at Royal events.

It's a load of utter bollocks.

It's such an odd thing a good majority of the British public will bow to a man who just happened to fall out of the right vagina at the right time.

Get rid of 'em.

This!

Was he born under a rainbow? Dear leader 😂 Sounds North Korean

@Mummynew08
You aren't in the minority- the vast majority of the population are not interested in this nonsense
The young no longer want a monarchy

I hear what you're saying - most probably people in your circle (and mine for the most part) agree but we are in the minority nationally according to the polls. When polled last year, 62% of the country said we "should continue to have a monarchy" after ER's death. That's a small majority

I think they might have been better just leaving thing as they were for the previous monarch.

I have already been exercised by what I think is called an Oxford comma before the "and" which I really don't think should be there.

It's not an Oxford comma. That comes before the final 'and' in a list of three or more things (red, white, and blue).

The comma here is to separate the two clauses.

3dogsandarabbit · 30/04/2023 08:41

OchreDandelion - In what way will it be a disaster? The people in the abbey will be quite happy to say it as they have been invited. The rest of us at home or elsewhere only say it if we want to. Can't see what all the fuss is about.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 30/04/2023 08:41

I do think this matters. We have a Constitutional Monarchy with power residing in the Government and Parliament. Requesting people swear allegiance to the King suggests a focus of power and loyalty away from the democratic elements of the State. Charles is a figurehead and this request for national allegiance moves beyond that so imply a direct request for loyalty to him / the Monarch rather than to all elements of the State. I am uncomfortable with that as I think it oversteps the boundaries of a Constitutional Monarchy.

piedbeauty · 30/04/2023 08:41

YukoandHiro · 30/04/2023 06:47

@Xenia you're right, that's no place for an Oxford comma (which used correctly I'm a big fan of)

It's not an Oxford comma.

Novella4 · 30/04/2023 08:43

Yes I saw that poll

More recent polls show a further drop
But polls are manipulated .
I meant that demographics are against the 'royals'

At least I assumed I'd have to wait for demographics to take them out until I woke up today to the 'everyone swear allegiance news AND that costs of the coronation are now £250 000 000

piedbeauty · 30/04/2023 08:43

HeadNorth · 30/04/2023 07:42

I'm thinking of Blackadder where the Hugh Laurie character says 'the public love me, did you hear them calling 'we hail Prince George' and Rowan corrects him - they are calling 'we hate Prince George' 😀

😂😂

I won't be saying that. Don't know anyone who would.

DustyLee123 · 30/04/2023 08:18

It’s ‘Queen’ Camilla that pisses me off the most. She’s not my queen and he’s not my king.

But they are your King & Queen and there’s absolutely nothing you can do about it (unless you’re a foreign National from outside the Commonwealth). As his subject you’ll abide by his laws and pay his taxes so I’d start getting used to it now.

LindyLou2020 · 30/04/2023 08:43

I'd like to digress a little and have a rant about how much all of this is costing, and who is paying.
(Apologies if there are other threads on this - I saw the headline, felt my anger rising, then saw this thread and jumped in).
I've just read a newspaper front page headline, (yes, I know it's clickbait), which, if true, predicts that increased security costs could mean that the overall cost of thr Coronation could reach £250 million.
I appreciate this is an estimate, not a fact, and I haven't read the article.
If the taxpayer is funding this, I don't want to, and wasn't consulted - were you?
I don't want a monarchy, don't want a Coronation, don't want to contribute, but it seems I have no choice 😡
Happy Sunday morning,everyone!

BadgerB · 30/04/2023 08:44

I prefer a constitutional monarchy to an elected Head of State (we elect such wonderful people, don't we?) and I shall be watching the whole thing on T.V.

However, no way will I do something so ridiculous as "pledge allegiance" with only the dog as witness - he's an anarchist and might bite me.

Novella4 · 30/04/2023 08:46

@Mummynew08
Sorry I wasn't clear

I was thinking of the poll that showed only 9% are interested in this coronation
I wish they'd realised that before wasting 250 million on Charles party !

www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/british-king-yougov-meghan-charles-b1074104.html

BeautifulWar · 30/04/2023 08:47

I won't be saying it, but then I'm not really very interested in the coronation and aren't be watching! I'm sure the people in the Abbey will, because it will like any other response in church, and maybe the hard core followers of this sort of thing who line the street and queue for hours will because you have to be pretty invested to do that in the first place!

unsync · 30/04/2023 08:47

Meme-tastic though. Looking forward to the remixes already. 🍿😂

user1471517095 · 30/04/2023 08:47

All these people on social media announcing how they don't agree with a Constitutional Monarchy and therefore it should be abolished. Blah Blah. There are millions of people who do like the Monarchy, it's just they don't bang on about it as though theirs is the only opinion that matters.

It will easily bring in 100s of .illions in business

Just like any large scale event. You have to spend to gain.

Agreed, that’s not an Oxford comma. Their correct usage is engraved on my soul.

Novella4 · 30/04/2023 08:48

@LindyLou2020

Let me tell you , if they are estimating 250 million - the truth will be more

Many yearly costs re the royals are kept from us . Their security costs are never fully revealed . Navy other costs obfuscated

He can take that the thieving magpie and his conniving, spiteful mistress and stick it up his anointed royal fundament.
