AIBU to think this homage to the King will go badly wrong?

According to BBC news: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-65435426

There are hopes that people will say out loud: "I swear that I will pay true allegiance to Your Majesty, and to your heirs and successors according to law. So help me God."

The Archbishop of Canterbury will then proclaim "God save the King", with all asked to respond: "God save King Charles. Long live King Charles. May the King live forever."

This is surely madness. Asking everyone in the Abbey - sure. People crowding nearby might be swayed to say "Hail the King" or something similarly short. But hoping for video footage of crowds in parks and pubs shouting a great long sentence that most don't fully buy into, then doing it again and with "live forever"! Does Charles really think he's liked that much? Is he? It doesn't seem very British at all, and seems destined to be a mess of people saying random stuff loudly.

The new photos were taken in the Blue Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace

Coronation: Public asked to swear allegiance to King Charles

The pledge is among several changes to the service, which will incorporate female clergy and other faiths.

Will he please pay inheritance tax on the race horses, paintings etc inherited from his mother?

Oh, you've seen her will have you? You know what he inherited?

Americano75 · 30/04/2023 08:21

I've got to hand it to them, just when you think they've hit peak insanity they pull a fresh belter out.

TriesHardButOftenFails · 30/04/2023 08:21

No big deal. If you are a Royalist you can watch the coronation etc with excitement and enjoy the occasion.
if you are not then go for a drink, go for a walk, chill out by the river or in the park with the kids.

No-one will be screaming off with your head.

We'll all be required to have a portrait of him at home at this rate. This is utterly insulting and also rather sinister.

Can't roll my eyes far enough at this.

Utterly insulting? Good grief. Sinister? Get a grip.

We live in a country where, if you like, you can join in pledging allegiance. If you don't want to, no-one gives a stuff. If you want to rip the piss out of the request you can do that too.

00100001 · 30/04/2023 08:22

Anyway to answer the OP, no it won't go horribly wrong.. they'll do aerial shots of random crowds and the flag waving and all that, with the abbey service audio over the top. The producers/directors/whoever will snap to close up of any crowd looking like they're taking part as soon as someone relays the information.

It won't go horribly wrong at all.

We should haggle for a few more bank holidays.

😂

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 30/04/2023 08:24

As it stands, the comma makes 'according to law' apply to heirs and successors. Without the comma, it would apply to the way that true allegiance is paid. The meaning is completely different. And it's impossible to detect the presence or absence of a comma in a statement that's made orally. So I won't be participating.

I am not a royalist but this thread is silly, they are just extending the offer to join in from just peers to whoever wants to.

There’s nothing wrong with that, and it is not the same as expecting most people to
do it - of course they don’t expect that.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 30/04/2023 08:25

There's no way I'll be watching the Coronation, let alone joining in with shit like that.

My sister, who is British, emigrated to Australia when she was 28 and after a few years got Australian Citizenship. As part of the process, she had to swear allegiance to the Queen, which she found very bizarre. Something she'd never had to do in her 28years in the UK

Polls have shown that most people aren't interested in the coronation.

Novella4 · 30/04/2023 08:25

"We live in a country where, if you like, you can join in pledging allegiance"

No we bloody don't

This is NEW
So much for tradition
This is part of Charles' modern skimmed down monarchy is it ? - did anyone actually believe him

ThisAintNoPartyThisAintNoDisco · 30/04/2023 08:26

May the king live forever and chanting allegiance..LOL.
The whole thing has turned into a mishmash of populist half baked ideas. Sums him up perfectly.

calimali · 30/04/2023 08:27

The more I hear about this coronation the more I am thinking it is time for the monarchy to come to an end. And this from someone who has supported them my whole life - love the history, the palaces etc etc. But all of this is just too, too much.

KCII is proving to be such a disappointment. I he so totally out of touch that he cannot see the in the midst of post(ish) covid, a cost of living crisis and the chaos Brexit has brought the very last thing we need is a cononation that seems to be getting more and more complex, more archaic and costlier by the day? He could have gone for a much more low key, streamlined and let's face it, cheaper, option. But no, instead he chooses to revel in the occasion. I don't know why I'm surpised - his investiture in Caernarfon was all about the bling and the public spectacle. It really does look like he revels in his 'do you know how very special I am' moments.

Let's face it. This will be a short reign. We have to pay for yet another one before too long. The queen's funeral - another huge show of pomp and ceremony - has only just taken place. And I don't accept that all of these extrs layers of pomp and expense are due to the organisers getting carried away. He is the king. He could say no.

I would have had far more respect for him had he had a quieter ceremony as an acknowledgment that he is now King of a country that is no longer a major world player, and out of respect for the millions of people struggling to cope with rising costs.

No idea what your post means. Where does it say we're forced to pledge allegiance? What does 'no we bloody don't' mean?

PortiasBiscuit · 30/04/2023 08:29

I actually don’t mind, I’ve never sworn allegiance to anything. I do love my country ( it’s not fashionable to say so, obviously) and he represents my country.
i am at a family BBQ though, so I imagine the coronation will be on the TV but I doubt anyone will be paying much attention!

AsTreesWalking · 30/04/2023 08:31

I'm (broadly) in favour of monarchy, and a keen advocate of the Oxford comma, but it's a daft innovation to invite everyone to say this. And that comma is just wrong.

Emotionalstorm · 30/04/2023 07:25

I like having a royal family but I still don't think I'll say the words.

I also like having a Royal Family but I’m still sad about the late Queen and I’m not really a fan of Charles and Camilla because of the past so I’ll watch the Coronation for the history and pageantry of it all but I’m not really feeling much joy.

caringcarer · 30/04/2023 08:32

More might agree if it was just allegiance to His Majesty. A lot of people dislike Harry after his shocking behaviour and would not pledge allegiances to Charles heirs which Harry.

chipsarnie · 30/04/2023 08:32

I hope there's footage of a food bank queue reciting the 'homage' while the world's luckiest man shows off his big diamond hat.

This. It's a complete non-story, stirred up by republicans with an agenda

cosmiccosmos · 30/04/2023 08:34

I agree @calimali. Evidently the Queens coronation cost 1.5m, in todays money approx 56m, his is costing in excess of 100m.

We are being fed a line of 'slimmed down' but we're getting just more excess at a time when people are really struggling.I don't think the RF care, I'm sick of all these photos of birthdays, wedding anniversaries, Kate and William on another jolly. They are so far removed from reality.

I've no doubt it will be an amazing spectacle after all we do all this stuff really well however the RF should be paying for some of it.

It’s ‘Queen’ Camilla that pisses me off the most. She’s not my queen and he’s not my king.

That’s were I got to

this change at the last minute to force her on us is shit and for that I cba by any of them

they need to go

Brrrrrrrrrrrr · 30/04/2023 08:35

I think you’ll be surprised at just how many will say it OP.

MzHz · 30/04/2023 08:37

charles comes across as a petulant child stamping his feet for attention and adoration like his mother had for years and years

he’s going overboard on the grandeur because he’s convinced himself that he’s worth it

Summersizzle · 30/04/2023 08:38

I've booked a weekend abroad to avoid the nonsense. Still shocked that the day he became king some prats in the street were shouting god save the king. Have people got no critical thinking skills these days. Totally agree with the comment above re falling out of the right vagina. Totally ludicrous in this day an age.
