According to BBC news: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-65435426

There are hopes that people will say out loud: "I swear that I will pay true allegiance to Your Majesty, and to your heirs and successors according to law. So help me God."

The Archbishop of Canterbury will then proclaim "God save the King", with all asked to respond: "God save King Charles. Long live King Charles. May the King live forever."

This is surely madness. Asking everyone in the Abbey - sure. People crowding nearby might be swayed to say "Hail the King" or something similarly short. But hoping for video footage of crowds in parks and pubs shouting a great long sentence that most don't fully buy into, then doing it again and with "live forever"! Does Charles really think he's liked that much? Is he? It doesn't seem very British at all, and seems destined to be a mess of people saying random stuff loudly.

The new photos were taken in the Blue Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace

Coronation: Public asked to swear allegiance to King Charles

The pledge is among several changes to the service, which will incorporate female clergy and other faiths.

Only way they will oull this off is if they hire some crowds and take some clips of it.

I am not british myself so the rotal nonsense isnt my thing anyway, several relatives are british and “royalists” and none of them are going to do that.

There is nothing likeable and honourable about the spoilt child like pensioner.

Bloopsie · 02/05/2023 07:43

Pull,royal* seesh typos

The whole coronation and the monarchy in general is an outdated and expensive farce. There is literally no benefit to them whatsoever.

Those who say they help tourism and diplomacy are deluded.

Most of the rest of the world finds them a twee amusement at best (and just pathetic if not!)

Yes a lot of people visit the Palace when they come from abroad but its just one thing to tick off the tourist check list and they'd visit regardless.

So please someone tell me what they actually do? What benefit do they actually bring for the horrendous amount they're paid?

ReverseFerret · 02/05/2023 07:50

The monarchy can fuck off

My thoughts exactly. I'm not a medieval peasant

Yes I agree.

I wonder if they think it will create some kind of mass feeling of being united. I mean the USA manages to get everyone to swear allegiance to the flag, so maybe they think this will appeal to the tiktok generation?!

Either way, I think it's ridiculous and they are going to put people off them even more. Unfortunately I think the monarchy in this country is dying a slow death.

ChaToilLeam · 02/05/2023 07:54

I prefer the words the Glasgow Celtic fans were singing:

🎶you can shove your coronation up your arse🎶

cakeorwine · 02/05/2023 08:08

I wonder how many MPs and other prominent people will be asked if they are "taking the pledge" and if any of them dare say no?

I know they HAVE to take the oath to sit in Parliament. I am sure there are some who take it without meaning it because it allows them to sit in Parliament.

But I wonder how many will say "actually, no I won't be taking the pledge as I don't think we should have a Monarchy.

grayhairdontcare · 02/05/2023 08:11

Thought it was his job to serve us and not the other way around?!?!

CampsieGlamper · 02/05/2023 08:43

Well it seems the haters have something to hate.
Sweet, innit?

Wishawisha · 02/05/2023 09:28

I don’t think they are expecting a lot of people to actually say the words. It’s probably just there to include the wider audience at home rather than because they think people will actually do it en masse. I don’t think there is anything to backfire.

I also don’t think Charles is completely deluded. He knows most people these days are completely ambivalent towards monarchy and virtually no one shows the same kind of reverence they used to. That’s why he wants to slim it down because he knows times have changed. I see them as living history - it’s all quite interesting but it’s not relevant to my day to day life.

For the same reason, I don’t see the issue with him being head of the Church of England. Surely no one thinks he is ACTUALLY some kind of spiritual leader with a direct one to God, as perhaps people felt hundreds of years a go. He knows he’s not. We all know he’s not.

Alondra
That's an UK website that has no idea what's talking about

Similar here -
Attend the appointment on the scheduled date and take the Spanish citizenship oath. With the provisions of Articles 23 CC and 224, 226, 228 and in accordance with the Civil Registry Regulations (hereinafter, RRC), the central object of the public deed is the declaration of the applicant who makes the Spanish citizenship oath of fidelity to the King and obedience to the Constitution and laws.

fidelity synonyms: loyalty, allegiance, obedience...

My (British) sister never had to swear an oath to the Queen until she emigrated to Australia. To get her Australian citizenship she had to attend a ceremony and swear allegiance to the British monarchy. Her Australian husband has never had to do this.

Just because other equally moral deviants did it doesn’t make it ok. They are meant to be an example to their subjects - well god help us all!

Well no, but it’s not new and it’s not really a travesty, it’s pretty normal and what monarchs/royals and aristos have always done. It goes along with arranged/political marriages, power and money.

No they’re not. If you look at the history of the monarchy some of the previous ones make the current incumbents look like models of rectitude - happily married for 18 years. British monarchs have never even pretended to be an example to their subjects.

CalfWithBigRoundEyes · 02/05/2023 10:49

I don't have a strong opinion on the monarchy but the whole thing (saying the word out aloud at home or wherever you are) is cringey and as someone else has said I'm neither a medieval peasant nor am I groupie.

Also the line is quite a handful. Not exactly short and snappy or easy for people to repeat. And I suppose everyone knows that Charles is going to love forever. Are we meant to lie in our paths?

It's all just a bit ridiculous.

It’s not that much of a thing in the States tbh. The last time I had to say it was in elementary school so about til Year 6, and hadn’t said it again. If you go to sports games, it’s the national anthem. Other then citizenship, it’s not widely done depending on the region.

BadgerB · 02/05/2023 11:23

Where on earth does this idea come from?
Perhaps because the late Queen was perceived to be a "good" woman?

Most monarchs have behaved outrageously - because they could.
Religious leaders are supposed to give a moral example, not monarchs

this was an interesting thread on Twitter.

Personally, it’s just pomp and ceremonial guff. Say it or or don’t, it’s meaningless.

I went to school in the US for a couple of years, and it was the most bizarre thing to watch all the other children stand up and swear allegiance to, essentially, the government. Quite 1984.

William's accent in 'The Windsors' would have it as something like shhay't.
