According to BBC news: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-65435426

There are hopes that people will say out loud: "I swear that I will pay true allegiance to Your Majesty, and to your heirs and successors according to law. So help me God."

The Archbishop of Canterbury will then proclaim "God save the King", with all asked to respond: "God save King Charles. Long live King Charles. May the King live forever."

This is surely madness. Asking everyone in the Abbey - sure. People crowding nearby might be swayed to say "Hail the King" or something similarly short. But hoping for video footage of crowds in parks and pubs shouting a great long sentence that most don't fully buy into, then doing it again and with "live forever"! Does Charles really think he's liked that much? Is he? It doesn't seem very British at all, and seems destined to be a mess of people saying random stuff loudly.

The new photos were taken in the Blue Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace

Coronation: Public asked to swear allegiance to King Charles

The pledge is among several changes to the service, which will incorporate female clergy and other faiths.

If anyone has to swear allegiance (whatever that means anyway), it should be to the country.

And references to God should be kept out of it.

It's not a very 'inclusive' thing to do.

What happens if you renounce this allegiance? Or say you didn't mean it.

There is atheist or other religion pledge option

vera99 - I don't think posting you tube clips like that is helping the Republicans. No idea who that man is but he's not exactly articulate is he. I couldn't watch all of it, I cringed for him.

Nothing she posts helps the republican cause. She’s single-handedly setting it back years.

Years ago I had a job which required me to swear allegiance to the Queen.
I did so, understanding that it meant allegiance the constitution of the U.K, as by law established. And that that constitution was embodied by the monarch.

Not that I had to do exactly what the Queen ordered me to do.

Eskarina1 · 01/05/2023 17:08

I would have loved to do this when I was in primary school in the 80s. I'm no longer in primary school and its no longer the 80s. The monarchy don't feel remotely relevant to my life other than their complete failure to provide any check or challenge to the government.

I have no inclination to swear loyalty or fealty to people who I place no value on. Practically Charles' first act as King was to abandon his life long support for the environment because Rishi Sunak told him to stay home. He clearly genuinely believes that the world is at serious environmental risk, he's in a position to actually have influence and he just folds. Why in the name of God or anyone else would I swear loyalty to someone who lacks the courage of their convictions?

I also think primary school kids have more sense these days. Back in 2021 my kids' school showed them a video of the prime minister, resulting in one of the children (sadly not mine) yelling "Boo Boris!".

ilovechocolate07 · 01/05/2023 17:40

People who like it will do it and people who don't... won't!

Ladyfrog59 · 01/05/2023 17:53

I'd rather S* in my hands and clap them swear allegiance to that Knob Rot!

Notimeforaname · 01/05/2023 17:55

It's all so sad and weird.

startingagain13 · 01/05/2023 17:56

Why would I jail anyone???!!! Especially not someone who is wasting money that could go to the people/children starving with no gas/electricity in my area. I think he/they ought to be ashamed of themselves.

startingagain13 · 01/05/2023 17:57

Maybe jail is more appropriate!

Inwiththenew · 01/05/2023 18:04

I’m already pissed off that my husband decided to put fucking bunting up today. I do wonder if I married the right man…..

But you still have the Monarch option.

I bet that if someone said they would like to swear allegiance to the UK but could they please not swear allegiance to God or to the Monarch, there would be "comments".

benkenobi · 01/05/2023 18:17

I'm with the Celtic fans on this one ✌🏿

Nanalisa60 · 01/05/2023 18:22

Well I’m a big royalist, and I won’t be saying it, I will be watching on the Tv , and will enjoy it, but I won’t be standing up in front of my Tv giving any homage.

I might manage a god save the King

TmFid · 01/05/2023 18:41

GooseberryCinnamonYogurt · 30/04/2023 06:43

Yeah exactly

That’s the only thing I world pledge and cheer for!! What a load of obsequious, outdated, expensive nonsense, at a time when people are really struggling all over the country. Greedy, royal parasites.

If only had such power you're wildly projecting there ! The BRF are doing very well on their own I'd say it's even stevens whether William will ever be King and if he is it will just be the UK the rest of the Commonwealth will say enough of the British Royal Family as head of state thank you very much. He's a viral taxi driver by the way called Chunky Mark that's his schtick. Rachel Johnson on LBC now kicking off about the oath thinks it's a bridge too far.

3dogsandarabbit · 01/05/2023 19:28

Chunky Mark - Oh dear.

How is it a step too far, no one is being forced to do it, and no one will know anyway.

Ilovecleaning · 01/05/2023 19:42

It sounds bonkers and hilarious 😂 If you want to join in, swear away. If you don’t, don’t.

pookie999 · 01/05/2023 19:49

It makes me feel disgusted that any person thinks they are that important. Beggars belief

CriticalAlert · 01/05/2023 19:59

AuntieMarys · 30/04/2023 06:47

My thoughts exactly. I'm not a medieval peasant

I agree. Never heard such shit in all my life. I've always been republican but now I fucking hate these bastards. The money being spent by the taxpayer on the coronation is OBSCENE. If he wants a coronation, he can afford to pay for it. The money We are paying could be better spent on the NHS.

Vegetus · 30/04/2023 06:55

It's such an odd thing a good majority of the British public will bow to a man who just happened to fall out of the right vagina at the right time.

Get rid of 'em.

Bernardo1 · 01/05/2023 20:00

NO!

And as it is optional, why is anybody bothered?

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 01/05/2023 20:03

Probably added it in so they can film as documentary evidence of Harry swearing allegiance to his dad.

He committed adultery with her. Once a OW/OM, always a OW/OM.

In how many marriages was Diana the OW? But death apparently clears all guilt.

Charles should have been allowed to ask Camilla to marry him when they were both in their 20s, but she wasn't aristocratic enough - and had a bit of a wild reputation.

The Family learned their lesson. Both of Charles's sons married commoners. With mixed results....

Its different. Charles is being crowned this week and we're supposed to swear allegiance to him.

The whole thing’s a bloody travesty. Two adulterers being head of the church, anointed with holy oil and religiously higher up the ladder to God than the Bishop of Canterbury! Bloody laughable but not in a funny way 😡
