Breeder has not giving us her address to view puppy

Hi we were looking for a spaniel breeder and found one not too far from us, price agreed with deposit agreed, breeder had chat on phone with us to find out about us & all was good. Arranged with breeder to visit puppy tomorrow at her house by phone however she said to us she would give us her address but up to now she hasn’t. So AIBU to think that she isn’t going to give us the chance to view the puppy considering we have deposit to pay her? Or are we missing something here that maybe she’s just been busy?

If you look at reviews of Champdogs they have a bunch of negative reviews - all from breeders who have been removed from their list due to : over breeding, breeding non regulation colours etc etc. All the positive reviews are from happy customers.
However I am AMAZED you were able to source a breeder in one morning who happened to have a puppy ready in a couple weeks. Vast majority would have a waiting list of people who registered interest and were vetted by the breeder ages ago.
Go today to just look and get the feel of the place.

Yes, something isn't quite right, is it?

It is not just being there at home with the puppy, how are you going to take it for walks? Springers need 1.5 hours to 2 hours of walking EVERY day. They also need mental stimulation, so either scent training or gun dog training to keep their minds active. You really have not thought about this and are incredibly selfish. You are a grown up and should know better than "me want fluffy puppy".

Yes my parents have 2 springers - old in age now - but still constantly needing 2+ hours of walking a day no slowing down for them! They’re a tricky breed if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Puppy will not be left alone for hours on end as my husband can very easily work from home and there’s family who can very easily come to look after the puppy

OP were you honest with the breeder regarding you and your husbands working hours? There is a reason a good breeder asks this and it is not a test of how much you can bullshit but so they will know if the breed is right for you and that you have fully considered how you will take care of the puppy and give it what it needs.

Whilst I personally feel every dog should have someone home with it during the day, there are some breeds that are more suited to being left for a couple of hours every day but springers are not one of them. If you have misled the breeder the.n you will likely have an unhappy puppy with behavioural problems which also means you will be an unhappy dog owner. Please please do some more research.

Working from home is WORK OP.
Your H won't be able to devote his working hours to the demanding job of raisng a puppy. Particularly a working breed spaniel.
So he either needs to lie to his employers about his output, or let the puppy down.

If you are even telling the truth about your & H's working patterns ...

WhiteFire · 30/04/2023 10:33

OP I was all for defending you but the latest update is just spectacularly dim. Have you just gone onto Champdogs, put in the breed and then looked at the first advert which 'helpfully' is saying the pups are ready mid may?

I don't know if you are really after a dog or not, but if you are this is really not the way to do it.

Legit breeders do not meet in carparks to lead you to mystery addresses.

They do not ask for deposits before seeing litters, or exchange puppies for cash in carparks or give excuses that you can't see puppies Mum because shes staying with a friend/gone for a walk/having a week in Marbs.

Very few legit breeders advertise on epupz/pets4homes/etc - they use the breed club website and breed clubs puppy co-ordinator to let people know they have or are planning a litter.

It sounds like this breeder has ghosted you possibly because they've sold the puppy you were interested in or have failed to source the right puppy to pretend to have bred it... or various other nefarious reasons.

Get a friend to ring the number and pose as a puppy buyer - see if she answers when it is another number!

There may be a legit reason, I was once 'ghosted' by a breeder I was due to visit a few days later. Turned out she had dropped dead of an aneurysm leaving a not very doggy husband to deal with a litter of giant breed puppies and he was not in any sort of state to sort it all out at all!

Getting someone else to call will show if shes being shifty quickly enough, if she answers a different number and tells a potential buyer there still are puppies or indeed that they're all gone, but shes still ghosting you... that answers that!

Two places I'd look for puppies.

Kennel Club Website will give you the details for the breeds Breed Clubs/Societies. THey will have a puppy co-ordinator or the secretary will have a litters/puppies list.

Champdogs have a decent listing system for breeders who KC reg, health test etc etc.

This is very good advice, OP. Please do not support the dirty business of puppy breeding. For your own sake as well as the animals’, because they often have hidden problems.

Red flag here. You should never be relying on family to look after YOUR dog.

NotAHouse · 30/04/2023 13:12

YABU to buy from a breeder, not a rescue.

Freysimo · 30/04/2023 13:40

Animal welfare groups may as well be banging their heads against a brick wall. Surely anyone with half a brain would research buying a puppy to ensure they weren't using a puppy farm?

User17439876 · 30/04/2023 14:01

Nobody that works should even think of getting a puppy though loads do, we both retired at 55 and didn't get our dog until then.

LadyLump · 30/04/2023 14:06

Oh ffs there is no helping some people is there. That’s if this thread isn’t a wind up. If it is real the poor pup will become one of the ones that op moans is too much hard work and either gives it to a rescue or tries to sell it on Facebook to get their money back

Is your husband working from home everyday? Your post suggests this is not the case so who is looking after the puppy when he is at work?

Does your husband even know you are getting this puppy?

The poor puppy. I feel so sorry for it already 😢

Jourdain11 · 30/04/2023 16:19

This all sounds absolutely crackers. I hope it isn't real, but I fear it is!

NYE2023 · 30/04/2023 16:20

@Freysimo indeed . My DD did a year volunteering for Blue Cross scouring FB for dodgy adverts to report. There were just so many of them 😢. As soon as they get taken down more pop up !

Time travel. It enables her to work a long full-time week, AND just 2 days a week, AND mon-fri 10am - 2pm.

It's a gig we should all break into, she must be minted from 2 simulataneous incomes.

SmallFerret · 30/04/2023 20:18

THREE simultaneous incomes ffs

This is what happens when staff are allowed to WFH, they have three jobs on the go at the same time. 😛

Are you getting one of the Poolgreen x Portishead litter listed on Champdogs?

You realise they are dual purpose, show x working bred and as such will be hard work puppies that need a LOT of training and work. Is this still a 'surprise' puppy gift and have you made the breeder aware of this fact?

No we are not & it’s not a surprise puppy my husband knows
