Breeder has not giving us her address to view puppy

Hi we were looking for a spaniel breeder and found one not too far from us, price agreed with deposit agreed, breeder had chat on phone with us to find out about us & all was good. Arranged with breeder to visit puppy tomorrow at her house by phone however she said to us she would give us her address but up to now she hasn’t. So AIBU to think that she isn’t going to give us the chance to view the puppy considering we have deposit to pay her? Or are we missing something here that maybe she’s just been busy?

No, no, no.
Please do your homework, this is puppy farming.

I agree. I wouldn’t touch this website with a barge pole.

Either she is a dodgy breeder, or she is a responsible breeder and she feels a red flag from you.
Have you had any conversations? How did they go?

Not sure how we would come across as a red flag because we spoke on phone & had a chat & all went well

She sounds a bit iffy but you don't sound very clued up either.

Agreed...Not knowing lineage of pups or affix or the breeder {Very basic stuff when getting a pedigree dog}..coefficient of inbreeding, health of ancestors..All pretty important stuff.

Kennel Club puts a limit on the number of litters an individual bitch can have, and the age , too..so if a litter isn't KC reg, walk away.

NYE2023 · 29/04/2023 17:53

@Safarigiraffe I’m sorry but the association for our dog breed specifically names that website as one NOT to use . indeed they ( and the kennel club) specifically say to avoid buying this way since high chance a scam or a puppy farm. If the puppy exists there is a very high chance that the normal checks breeders do to avoid interbreeding will not have been done meaning that your pup could have a high chance of having a genetic disease . Our breeder gave us the paperwork for genetic testing of the parents and a full pedigree to demonstrate this . I even went with her to the vets for its check up before she handed him over to me .

we went through a big vetting process with the breeder to establish how genuine we were before we were allowed to meet our puppy at the breeders . It is also a very good idea to meet at the breeders location and to also meet the mother as the best way to rule out puppy farm .

Pets 4 homes is not a good site! Puppy farms galore- puts dogs in danger and they often live in horrible conditions.

PoseyFlump · 29/04/2023 17:56

@Safarigiraffe when you had a phone chat did she say which county she lives in, like a rough idea of where she is based? Did she ask you about your dog experience. It could just be that both of you are worried! You haven't paid any money yet. If you get an invite but sure to ask to see mum with pups and research on internet what questions you should ask. I did buy from pets 4 homes many years ago but it wasn't full of scammers back then. The breeder was lovely and vetted me. And me her.

BadNomad · 29/04/2023 18:00

Did you tell the breeder on the phone that both you and DH work full-time? A good breeder would not give a puppy to people who will not be there most of the day to look after it and train it.

My husband is retired and I work 10-2 term time

She can't be a responsible breeder.

No responsible breeder allows people they've never met to just turn up & collect a pup. Responsible breeders interview in person, & usually more than once.

Holidayheaven2 · 29/04/2023 18:06

…….but as per my previous questions @Safarigiraffe did this ‘breeder’ ask you about your lifestyle, your history of owning dogs, your thoughts on training & behaviour?

She asked us if we have had dogs before & about lifestyle as in if we are around during the day but nothing more than that

Since when? Because you asked in Feb this year about getting a Springer as a surprise for your husband and you said then that you both worked full-time 5 days a week. Everyone told you not to get a dog because of that.

I'm guessing you've lied to the breeder too then. You're a massive red flag.

Jellybebe · 29/04/2023 18:11

@SmallFerret we don't know for sure yet whether or not she is a responsible breeder as OP has not yet given her any money for a deposit or taken any puppy away. For all we know, she has gone non-contact with OP because she is a responsible breeder and had some concerns about OP. It may also well be the case that she shares her address with OP tomorrow, OP turns up and the breeder asks plenty of questions of OP....or she may be a complete scammer and has already given the puppy to someone who was happy to put down a deposit without seeing puppy.

Jellybebe · 29/04/2023 18:12

@Safarigiraffe if your husband has trained springers in the past, surely he should have a couple of reliable contacts as a starting point?

suzy2b · 29/04/2023 18:13

We have bought 2 puppies from pets 4 homes nothing wrong with the people we bought frome

youtwoandme · 29/04/2023 18:15

This is how many people STEAL puppies. Pretend they're buying. Get the address and steal the litter 😢
She's being cautious. You could be anyone.

Which is why any reportable breeder will firstly visit the potential buyers home.

Ducatifan · 29/04/2023 18:16

Reputable, not reportable.

If she does get back to us with her address should we go or just leave it

Leave it.

At Spaniel Aid uk you can adopt a Spaniel that needs a home.

Don’t get a puppy if you’re both out all day, that’s awful. The only reason we decided it was doable is because my DH does shifts and they were never left more than 4 hours, plus we always got them in the summer holidays (bar one lot) and the neighbour used to take them into her house if we asked.

An older dog might be better off in a house rather than kennels but a puppy is honestly like a baby. I’m put off by you wanting a particular colour, too. Why?

@BadNomad The plot thickens! Just read the thread- About now would be the right time to buy a puppy for June!

@Safarigiraffe Does your husband know about this or is it a surprise for his birthday?
