To consider two dishwashers?

Instead of a cutlery drawer/plate cupboard?

Not much thought has gone into this but why not have a dirty DW and a clean one, then I wouldn't have to put cutlery away?

Please talk me out of it before I do something stupid.

If I ever get room tiny kitchen I'm trying this.

Devoutspoken · 29/04/2023 09:18

I've seen this before, 2 small ones, great idea

FlounderingFruitcake · 29/04/2023 09:19

We have 2 and I LOVE it. We still have cutlery and plate drawers though. It stops any dirty pile up in the sink so generally one is being stacked dirty whilst the other is running.

Symposium · 29/04/2023 09:20

Can't see that actually working. You would have to use up everything from the clean one before starting again. You are bound to get in a muddle and someone will inevitably put dirty stuff on top of the clean when they can't remember which one they're supposed to use today.

notafraidofthebigbadwolf · 29/04/2023 10:13

OMG new kitchen completed just this week with 2 dishwashers and I absolutely love it too! No excuses for things to be left out when the machine is full or running. No reason not to use the slow ECO function. I agree though that it wouldn’t be as good if it needed to be used for storage because of mixing up clean and dirty. How about having 2 machines and 3 cutlery baskets with one full of clean stuff living on the counter?

LlynTegid · 29/04/2023 10:15

I wouldn't, you know someone would get mixed up, albeit unintentional. Think what you could buy instead, say more powerful cleaner.

SugarAndSpike · 29/04/2023 10:21

I live on my own but yes I figured that if it was a genius idea then loads of people would be doing it.

Can't have two dishwashers AND plate/cutlery storage as it's a small kitchen but maybe I'm back to the drawing board Grin

It seems a bit excessive but it looks like they can't sell us anything else for kitchens so now started on having two of everything (see also two sinks, two ovens, two fridges).

You would still need a cutlery drawer/ crockery storage because not everything gets used every day.

mintbiscuit · 29/04/2023 10:24

OP this is my life goal but I cannot get DH onboard with the idea. It makes so much sense to me. Do it!!!!

Katypp · 29/04/2023 10:25

Do it, OP. I have two and my only regret is I didn't go for two full size. I have one full size and one slimline. The second dishwasher was actually cheaper then the drawers that I was going to put there.
Practically, it's a game changer. So, for instance, this morning, I had one dishwasher half full of dirty dishes, which I topped up with glasses etc from last night and set it off. Our breakfast dishes - which would have been stacked waiting for thecdw to finish - now go in the second dishwasher, so clean surfaces all the time. As another pp said, it also means I can use the 5 hour eco setting as there's no rush. Both my dw are on each day.

notafraidofthebigbadwolf · 29/04/2023 10:29

Oh… as it’s just you, you’ll not mess up clean and dirty. You’ll be fine. So what if a couple of clean bits stay in the machine when it’s time to start using it as the dirty machine? Do it!

AbreathofFrenchair · 29/04/2023 10:29

You live alone. How much dirty cutlery and washing up are you producing that a dishwasher would need to be used every day anyway?

Unless you have friends/family over daily or use a crazy amount of cooking implements for each meal.

And how many multiples do you have of stuff if you have enough to fill a dishwasher and not have to use it again the till the dishwasher has been filled and cleaned and ready to go?

Or.maybe I'm odd because we only have 6 knives, forks, teaspoons, bowls, side plates, dinner plates, pasta bowls, 1 set of saucepans, 2 frying pans etc?!

Buildingthefuture · 29/04/2023 10:35

I have 2 F&P tall dishwasher drawers side by side. Absolutely LOVE it! I do cook quite a bit and there are never any dirty pots and no bending down to empty the dishwasher 😊 Also if I (well actually not me but always DH!) forget to put anything in the dishwasher when it’s on, you just knock on the door and it stops. My dishwashers make me happy, which I think shows I am truly old and boring 🤣🤣

SOMumm · 29/04/2023 11:10

My full sized d/w is on at least once a day, in the space next to the sink designated for a washer, washer moved elsewhere in the kitchen, never thought to have two! I would not want to be without it, in fact I came to this house because I could see space for a d/w.
I have seen two side by side in an immense London kitchen rejigged, in the central island, with plenty of forward space to allow for the door dropping, room to walk
around, save bashing of calves.
One had a 30deg glasses wash as they entertained a great deal, with quick or eco wash so was specialised, used for washing delicates, on constantly apparently.

If you want two, have two!

I have found/find that some people become quite defensive when they discover I have ONE ! - my neighbour looked really shocked! Came in for a nosey, saw more than she bargained for.
Why does anyone think it affects them at all.
I hear - “why do you want a dishwasher, there is only you” - making assumptions
She doesn’t need a dishwasher, she’s got me! - most original
We only have the dishwasher on once/twice a week - gosh
Why can’t you just wash up? - myob
comments about running costs - environment - not getting clean enough etc.

I love my dishwasher, would not want to be without it : in a regular sized kitchen,
it is the Star!

Yes have TWO, side by side, like squeaky clean twins.

IfIGoThereWillBeTrouble · 29/04/2023 11:11

I think @SugarAndSpike is a genius

NannyGythaOgg · 29/04/2023 11:20

I wish I had put 2 in for the same reason. I live alone dishwasher only on twice a week mostly and it would just have worked so well

NoFall · 29/04/2023 11:22

We have 2 dishwashers and it works well. We’ve never got mixed with clean/dirty, you get used to it and just do it on autopilot. We also have 2 of other appliances. It’s not stupid!

Vermin · 29/04/2023 11:24

My neighbour has two drawer style ones and it’s a brilliant arrangement. I think that the drawer ones are however bonkers expensive

MusicstillonMTV · 29/04/2023 11:28

We have two dishwashers - it's amazing!

But we do still put stuff away.

What I like:

Our kitchen is always tidy, never anything stacked up in the sink

Can put in pots and pans and not worry about taking up space

So so good for when we have guests

HereLiesBetelgeuse · 29/04/2023 11:28

I've got two. I'd never go back to just having one.

Clementineorsatsuma · 29/04/2023 11:29

It's a thing now in larger new builds. I'd do it like a shot!

SOMumm · 29/04/2023 11:29

I solved this by removing the lower shelf in the cupboard above the d/w, buying 2 shelf rack thingies from Ikea/Wilko/JL in the corners, jugs and tall fat mugs I happened to have holding cutlery, it works fine, cleaner in fact as I was regularly cleaning the cutlery/knife drawer, of crumbs, ricegrains, hairs lurking therein.
All good silverware, Royal Doulton, Le Creuset, Granny’s gold rimmed delicate coffee set, now live happily at my delighted daughter’s non dishwashered house.

CastlesinSpain · 29/04/2023 11:32

I have a friend who has two dishwashers. She is originally from the USA and said it's common there.

Desperatelyseekingcommonsense · 29/04/2023 11:32

I’d do it but you’ll need some form of storage somewhere for the weird bits that aren’t often used. Unless you are going seriously minimalist. I pretty much live out of one dishwasher. Weekdays it’s normally 4 cereal bowls, 4 side plates knives and spoons for breakfast Then dinner plates, cutlery, glasses, a serving plate and a pan.

Normally I run it overnight and empty it in the morning but if the dc are going to theirs Dads for dinnerI have reloaded the breakfast stuff back in to the clean dishwasher and ran it all through again as otherwise I have to run 1/2 a dishwasher.

strawberryjeans · 29/04/2023 11:32

I’d have never even thought of having two but it makes sense
