To consider two dishwashers?

Instead of a cutlery drawer/plate cupboard?

Not much thought has gone into this but why not have a dirty DW and a clean one, then I wouldn't have to put cutlery away?

Please talk me out of it before I do something stupid.

I can understand having two if you have a big, busy family, but living on your own it seems like a massive waste of space and wont work how you think it will.

Say you have a full clean dishwasher and full dirty, at some point you will have to start putting dirty plates and clean plates in the same dishwasher, unless you have one for dirty plates and one for storage, but then you might as well just have draws and cupboards

OR - you could Ruthlessly Declutter (YT full of these vids atm)
you wouldn’t need one much less two
Extreme Minimalism even.
Then when that doleful exercise is completed,
you could manifest The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning,
make a proper job of streamlining your home/life,
buy paper plates, mugs, wooden cutlery and microwave dinners in a box from M&S,
you would have a neat tidy kitchen -
or you could rebel and have two dishwashers !!

SkunkFiles · 29/04/2023 12:02

that seems…excessive!

Seashor · 29/04/2023 12:07

A person after my own heart. I’ve always thought that this was a brilliant idea.

BalticTellin · 29/04/2023 12:08

We (sort of) did this in our small kitchen, and now we have a big kitchen we have the same arrangement. It is not two separate dishwashers, it is a Fisher & Paykel double dishdrawer which is one machine housing two separate dishdrawers.

There are two of us so we only usually have enough to fill one drawer at a time (which is why we bought it), then when that's full we start loading the other one. If you have a lot to wash you can run both at the same time.

They are expensive but are very reliable, our current one is nearly 10 years old. Ours is a double but you can get singles if you have very limited space.

We've got two dishwashers and the system they work is a treat... Me and Him 😉🤣

I always thought to have one was a luxury but cannot get my head around the thought of having two...🤷🏼‍♀️🤯

wordsthreerandom · 29/04/2023 12:23

I have two full sized washers in a busy family home.

It isn't that great. This morning I came downstairs to two dishwashers half full of dirty stuff so had to sort it out and restack

Some mornings I have two dishwashers to empty instead of one (a job I hate)

Family members (including myself) go to cupboards and drawers for clean items rather than think about going in a dishwasher.

It does mean I don't have plates waiting around for a wash but that's the only bonus really.

midsomermurderess · 29/04/2023 12:25

This came up in a sit-com recently didn’t it? And is now finding life of a sort, periodically, on Mumsnet. Would two dishwashers not use up a lot of space in your kitchen? And people go on about the time it takes to unload one. I have a full-size one and can empty it while the kettle boils.

SeasonsBleatings · 29/04/2023 12:27

I wanted this for my new kitchen (albeit at least one would have been full sized). DH and the builder openly laughed at me. I have ongoing regret that I didn't convince them.

Brazilagogo · 29/04/2023 12:32

Could you fit two slimline with space for a 30cm cupboard with pullout drawers beside it?

Yes it does take up space - we have a big kitchen so it's fine but I wouldn't have wanted it in a small place.

My least favourite thing about it is having to empty two at the same time sometimes

BigBundleOfFluff · 29/04/2023 12:34

100% yes, do it. When I redo my kitchen I will be doing this. Just makes so much sense.

SeasonsBleatings · 29/04/2023 12:40

Also our eco cycle is 5 hours and we always generate extra dirty dishes during that time.

TheKeatingFive · 29/04/2023 12:44

YES!!! We did it. I love it.

AprillaCourt · 29/04/2023 12:52

This has been a thing for a good few years - a friend works for SieMatic & they describe double dishwashers as "cupboards that clean" 😀

You basically never put crockery & cutlery back in a drawer or cupboard, you take it fresh from one dishwasher, use it, & place it in the other.

I live on my own but yes I figured that if it was a genius idea then loads of people would be doing it.

Can't have two dishwashers AND plate/cutlery storage as it's a small kitchen but maybe I'm back to the drawing board Grin

A good joiner could fit two 6place compacts in one cupboard, ideally in a tall cupboard buildt fir housing wall ovens. If you've got money you could get two small drawer style ones in a lower to see your back.
This is my dream!

StripeyDeckchair · 29/04/2023 13:00

Family of 6 with 2 full size dishwashers.

Each one has a reversible sign.

  • I'm dirty. Please turn me on
  • I'm clean. Please empty me.

No excuse for the children to get it wrong

FinallyHere · 29/04/2023 13:12

If I still lived in my own, I would definitely do this.

No big drama if you do put something dirty in the clean. A quick run of one or the other machine and it's all sorted.

For me, this is obvious. We also have the washing machine in the bathroom, rather than the more typical kitchen.

No idea why others don't do this. Had lots of plumbers claim it was illegal Such nonsense.

I just figure we're ahead of the curve 🤷‍♀️

But space is an issue. Not everyone has the space for it, that's a big barrier.

I'm totally going to have 2 dw in the new kitchen, and I'm seriously considering moving the washing machine upstairs, possibly I to the ensuite (or maybe make a laundry room out of the boxroom which backs onto the ensuite?).

Littlemissprosecco · 29/04/2023 13:22

I’ve had two in my kitchen for 10 years now. It is genius! Never get muddled, no time wasted unloading, always space to load everything after big dinner parties, Christmas etc…. It’s a no brainer

CorporaINobbyNobbs · 29/04/2023 13:23

Yes my sister used to have the double drawer one it was great. Didn’t take up much more room than a large single one. Could work for you as only you there?

CorporaINobbyNobbs · 29/04/2023 13:23

If I was building my dream house i totally would have two.

It's not illegal, as such, but it is a legal requirement not to put a plug socket within about 10ft of a bath or shower. A lot of bathrooms a bit too small to allow this distance. But it is a really good idea.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 29/04/2023 13:27

You are describing my dream kitchen.

DH thinks it is over the top but one day, when I get to design my own kitchen, he will learn to appreciate my genius!
