To consider two dishwashers?

Instead of a cutlery drawer/plate cupboard?

Not much thought has gone into this but why not have a dirty DW and a clean one, then I wouldn't have to put cutlery away?

Please talk me out of it before I do something stupid.

Live on my own, on average 3 times a week, no apology here

FarmGirl78 · 29/04/2023 14:26

I saw this as a meme once, saying why not just get every cupboard in your kitchen replaced with a dishwasher, and now it's not so funny anymore 🙈

Can't see that actually working. You would have to use up everything from the clean one before starting again. You are bound to get in a muddle and someone will inevitably put dirty stuff on top of the clean when they can't remember which one they're supposed to use today.

If the dishwasher tablet flap is open, then it’s clean and emptying; if it’s closedwith a tablet inside, then it’s dirty and filling

Dampbedding · 29/04/2023 14:54

We have this, it's brilliant.

We have a little sign which hooks over the handle to show which is the clean one.

DancingWithTheMoonlitKnight · 29/04/2023 14:57

If I had the space I'd definitely have two.

getafringenotbotox · 29/04/2023 15:05

Fucking genuis. I wish I had the space for this

RandomMess · 29/04/2023 15:08

I was gutted I couldn't fit 2 in our new house it's such an awkward shape.

They are just 2 cupboards that clean their contents!

Nat6999 · 29/04/2023 15:09

I follow a page on Facebook where someone is renovating a house & they are having two dishwashers & two washing machines. It's a gamechanger, if you have room, go for it.

We (sort of) did this in our small kitchen, and now we have a big kitchen we have the same arrangement. It is not two separate dishwashers, it is a Fisher & Paykel double dishdrawer which is one machine housing two separate dishdrawers.

There are two of us so we only usually have enough to fill one drawer at a time (which is why we bought it), then when that's full we start loading the other one. If you have a lot to wash you can run both at the same time.

https://www.fisherpaykel.com/uk/dishwashing/contemporary-dishwashers/

They are expensive but are very reliable, our current one is nearly 10 years old. Ours is a double but you can get singles if you have very limited space.

I have my Fisher & Paykel double drawer dishwasher for over 18 years now so I can recommend the brand too. However, I just use this as a normal dishwasher and empty it after use. I generally just use the top drawer, easier for my back. Handy for family parties as you can start them at different times.

Cosyblankets · 29/04/2023 15:17

I assumed this was a family and thought oo not a bad idea.
But how much washing up can one person create?

Pedallleur · 29/04/2023 15:43

I've seen it in other homes. Dirty/Clean then reverse. It's brilliant but everyone in the house has to be on board with the idea. No dirty stuff in the clean one. Perhaps a tag on the door to show which is the right one. If you have room and can afford it do iy

Hadjab · 29/04/2023 15:46

I think I’m being thick, because it doesn’t make much sense to me. I fill the dishwasher over the course of the day, run it in the evening and empty it before bed, so there’s never any dirty stuff hanging around on the sides - and repeat. How is leaving clean dishes in the second dishwasher not the same as putting them away in a cupboard?

Pedallleur · 29/04/2023 15:47

Now I want that fisherpaykel.

Taxitaxiforever · 29/04/2023 15:54

A little bit off topic but I new a 96yr old and her family moved her into a new build luxury flat and she used dishwasher as a filing cabinet 😂

Unprecedentedusername · 29/04/2023 15:54

I have 2 full size dishwashers. We empty them when cycle is complete though. 3 adults in our household. Works a treat. If you have space do it!

OhamIreally · 29/04/2023 15:55

SugarAndSpike · 29/04/2023 10:21

I live on my own but yes I figured that if it was a genius idea then loads of people would be doing it.

Can't have two dishwashers AND plate/cutlery storage as it's a small kitchen but maybe I'm back to the drawing board Grin

Could you have two half dishwashers? I have a half size dishwasher that's perfect and gets put on most days.

RandomMess · 29/04/2023 15:55

@Hadjab because you don't actually empty the clean dishwasher. You take the stuff out of it as you need to use it instead of taking it out the cupboard so you bypass the step of from dishwasher to cupboard altogether and actually don't need any/much cupboard space.

ChristmasFluff · 29/04/2023 16:05

Couldn't do it. The stuff would always smell of dishwasher.

I suggest getting rid of all dishwashers and washing by hand.

But two fridge-freezers? Already there.

FinallyHere · 29/04/2023 16:25

@MereDintofPandiculation

This. ^. This is genius.

Like so many other genius ideas, it's totally obvious once it has been pointed out. Thank you.

Surely, even my DH, who often gets confused because, I suspect, prefers to add one dirty item to emptying the full clean load, could not get muddled up by that 'way of working'.

Blueicecream · 29/04/2023 16:26

Absolutely go for it!!

We moved in here last year. I wanted 2 dishwashers and everyone thought I was crazy.

We only got 1 in the end and its a massive regret. Even DH agrees now we need a second one and we're going to lose a cupboard to get a second one in.

FinallyHere · 29/04/2023 16:29

@Hadjab

Your dishwasher is never filled up completely by the end of the day?

Ours often is, so is run at any time in a day. Any dishes used while it is running tend to be left in the sink , which I deplore.

How is leaving clean dishes in the second dishwasher not the same as putting them away in a cupboard?

The dishes sit patiently in the 'clean' dishwasher to be used. There is not job 'putting the dishes away in the cupboard'. This is for me one of the advantages of the two dishwasher system.

opinionssoughtplease · 29/04/2023 16:30

I think this about laundry. Have a room just for laundry - washing, drying, hanging, just get your clothes from there instead of all the bloody carting around the house to different rooms

sleepwhenidie · 29/04/2023 16:32

Two dishwashers here- DH thought I was mad but quickly acknowledged it was a great idea. The use one fill one idea is a great theory but doesn’t work, we still empty one in one go. But the kitchen never gets cluttered with dirty dishes waiting for space in the dishwasher (family of 5). Very happy with it. We also have w/m upstairs which make so much more sense as that’s where clothes are stored/taken off!

WellTidy · 29/04/2023 16:48

This sounds ideal. Ours is on for the third time today already. I’ve cooked breakfast (pancakes) and lunch (soup) from scratch and prepped dinner from scratch (pizzas). None of this sounds like it would use that much cutlery, crockery, utensils etc but it clearly does!

DyslexicPoster · 29/04/2023 16:51

If my kitchen was bigger I would do this. One dirty, one clean. Do it! Do it! Do it!
