It's not what I want kids to be subjected to.

Most people with a brain know that adult entertainers who revolve their acts around taking the piss out of women shouldn't be reading stories in schools. The attempted gotcha about pantomime dames is pathetic too, the faux naievity that they're the same when they're not. I'm not sure what sort of incursion it's supposed to be teaching either, personally I'd rather children learn that people are all still regular people doing regular jobs and regular things regardless of their sexual orientation; to me that's the more valuable and inclusive message than these caricatures. It's possible to nuture children to be inclusive without this.

Grumpypotamus · 27/04/2023 16:58

@Silverrocks agree.

Echobelly · 27/04/2023 16:59

@katyperryseyelid - no one has had barely covered arses waved at children at a drag queen story time.

That was a cabaret event that I agree was ill judged but it's not connected to DQST. Stop believing every outraged headline that you see without reading/watching what the actual story was about.

Petrarkanian · 27/04/2023 17:00

I can't bear drag or pantomine dames. Both would be banned in my new world order.
Children should not be exposed to drag, sexualised versions of what they think a woman should be. I'm so glad mine are grown up and I don't have to have anything to do with this bollocks.

So drag queens take the piss out of women but pantomime dames don't? What are they then, a respectful homage?

I’m not taking about that event. I can think for myself.

I am taking about a story time that two people I know took their young children too and posted the photos and videos on facebook to show how cool they were.

The man reading the story added in some “dance” moves. The people I know thought it was fabulous. I thought it looked horrifying.

Sorry for all the typos.

I've seen quite a few pantos and personally never seen a panto dame with their balls out, nor have I heard them joke about fishy fannies or the like.

PermanentTemporary · 27/04/2023 17:04

Im roughly in FirstFallopians camp. I'm not particularly bothered by it but it's kind of odd there's such a focus on making this type of entertainment happen.

If someone wants to organise Pantomime Dame Story Hour, that's fine in a way. But a) nobody has, and b) the fact is that a Pantomime Dame us exactly in a Pantomime to appeal more to the adults with a load of innuendo, alongside the comedy for the kids. In fact it would be slightly odd to have a Dame story hour. So I'm not sure it's that much of a gotcha.

matchalattewithsoy · 27/04/2023 17:05

I have no issue with it. My DC's school fete has had drag story time for a few years running and it's been really popular. I've been along with my own kids a few times and IMO it's been absolutely within the realms of what is acceptable for children.

Ericaequites · 27/04/2023 17:07

@ArabeIIaScott Tame drag is less destructive than unquestioning trans acceptance even for young children. Puberty blockers are not benign drugs, and almost always lead to later use of cross sex hormones. These can lead to permanent medicalization, and a shorter lifespan.

Farmerama1 · 27/04/2023 17:08

Volunteers, mostly retired women, have run free story sessions in our libraries and schools for decades. Why do these selfless acts go unrecognised and unremarked until men (in wigs and heels) get involved?

Farmerama1 · 27/04/2023 17:11

And I agree with others that there are much better ways to expose children to diverse people that feel less forced.

Because they're boring and no one wanted to go?

Actually our local library has a very popular story/song hour led by a male member of staff. It's been going for years and is very popular.

Reminder of rainbow dildo monkey story time for those that choose to forget, or insist that these things don't happen.

That wasn't a drag queen?

Hubblebubble · 27/04/2023 16:07

@GinUnicorn do you feel the same way about Christmas panto dames?

Panto dames are fine as long as we can continue to call them men dressing up as women for fun.

The problem only comes when children are told that these men are women and should be treated like women and referred to as women. Or they start making sexual innuendos in a school.

AskMeMore · 27/04/2023 17:18

And the OP is about schools.

ElbowsToes · 27/04/2023 17:21

Peter Pan is played by women in panto.

As for reading being boring.

What is this odd constant need for excitement or to be perma happy.

That's not normal life.

msisfine · 27/04/2023 17:21

@melchiorsmistress you are conflating drag performers and trans people. The vast majority of drag performers are gay men. Wearing a costume. Who go about their daily lives as gay men.

AskMeMore · 27/04/2023 17:22

So performances in a pub a year ago? Not a school now.

It's about dismantling boundaries, of the parents and the children. Start with drag queen story time, it's just fun, sparkles and glitter! Move on to rainbow dildo money, the council-run library think it's fine and educational so it must be okay! Now dqst in school, where the parents aren't present and the teachers have been trained that this is diverse and inclusive! Where are we going with this, and whose benefit is it for?
