It's not what I want kids to be subjected to.

Is your children's school actually doing a drag storytime? It's something that makes a good headline but probably doesn't actually happen.

GettingStuffed · 27/04/2023 15:38

At least they're prepared to do it, as far as I know it's a US phenomenon, and taxes place in libraries not schools. Most drag artists are grey entertainers.

Samphiredragonfly · 27/04/2023 15:38

Yup. To keep the culture war relevant. Not had any trans posts recenty.

ExpatInSlavikLand · 27/04/2023 15:39

Absolutely not.

FairlyNew · 27/04/2023 15:40

Subjected to what? @Neededanewuserhandle

user1492757084 · 27/04/2023 15:43

I agree.
Why label anything so specifically when it can be off putting to some.
Why not often just have a day of dress up story time where a person, of any creed, sex, age etc. (even a person in drag) dresses up in a fun way for the kids and reads them a story.
Then the creative side of the reader and the story is the focus and no one needs to feel uncomfortable..

Story time is not labelled for other minorities such as - Granny story time, Bald man story time, Hindu lady story time, Divorcee story teller day, Single Dad story telling, Bad dentistry story time or Obese story time.
It is completely uneccessary to label and advertise Drag Storytime.

Oysterbabe · 27/04/2023 15:46

Where is this happening?

Neededanewuserhandle · 27/04/2023 15:51

I have no time for Turning Point UK, but do we really need drag storytime?

I don't in any way see a problem with it. Would you take your kid to a pantomime? They're not doing the same drag show they would for adults, they're wearing a costume and reading a kid's book. What it is they're being 'subjected to' is a story.

ElbowsToes · 27/04/2023 15:56

What's wrong with a Granny in a pair of trousers and a short hair cut reading to children instead?

pumpkintits · 27/04/2023 15:58

What is the advantage of a drag queen doing this in comparison to any other person reading children a story?

FirstFallopians · 27/04/2023 16:01

Meh I just don’t see the value in it?

I enjoy some drag performers- they’re very talented and funny, but it is an adult form of entertainment. I enjoy it because they’re witty, cutting and make observations about life as an adult which are vulgar, but accurate.

I don’t see what a 5 year old would get from a man-in-drag reading a book over an actual children’s entertainer.

I’m glad we’re talking about diversity more, but it’s the boring day-to-day interactions which help with this more. A male teacher talking about his husband in the same way he would about a wife, or other kids having two mums or whatever. A man in exaggerated hair and makeup reading Superworm isn’t going to do much long term.

Hubblebubble · 27/04/2023 16:04

Went to one in the local library. It was panto style dress with animated reading. All the different characters voices done specially. The kids loved it.

GinUnicorn · 27/04/2023 16:05

No. The whole thing is crazy. Drag is adult entertainment. I also wouldn’t support stripper story hour or gangster story hour.

I just don’t see how it benefits kids.

Hubblebubble · 27/04/2023 16:07

@GinUnicorn do you feel the same way about Christmas panto dames?

(Although I don't see why it would need a label)

You don't understand how someone helping kids with reading would benefit the kids? Ffs

PonyPatter44 · 27/04/2023 16:08

Actually gangster story time would be brilliant. Not fakey Al Capone impersonators either, proper ex-Cat A gangsters.

MissyB1 · 27/04/2023 16:09

So you believe that drag queens are exactly the same as pantomime dames?

No we don't. Kids never ask for it. So who is pushing it?

Hubblebubble · 27/04/2023 16:10

@PonyPatter44 it would be a lovely way to rehabilitate them and reduce re offending rates by helping them become valuable members of mainstream society

100% this.

Men in fake breasts and clownish make up is not 'diversity'.

Hubblebubble · 27/04/2023 16:13

@MissyB1 the one I saw was. It's all showbiz, and they dress for their audience. So more fairy princess style for story time. Nothing is sexualised. It's very much panto Dame vibes. I'm all for the promotion of literacy.
