to be alarmed that more and more places are allowing dogs?

Just went to Wilko recently who had a sign up saying all dogs welcome. Went to a bistro and they allowed dogs too. Had lunch listening to small yappy dogs.

Since when did it become acceptable to allow dogs into shops and food places?

Same thread every day.

Nah they are different. We'll have a new thread every time someone discovers another shop/cafe/restaurant brand that allows dogs. Yesterday's thread was about buses. Today's is Wilko's.

Coming next week: Dobbies.

I am pleased that our now dog friendly restaurant remains relatively dog free. The other local cafe is tiny and I wont go in it as I regularly found myself sat next to a large breed or someone with a small breed on there lap feeding it off the plate. Gross all round and I own a dog.

I don't want to sit in a restaurant with a dog so I choose to go to places without them or with not many dogs, not bothered with dogs in non food stores - alot of lock down dogs have separation anxiety so being able to take them with you is great

Emotionalsupportviper · 26/04/2023 13:44

If "more and ore places are allowing dogs" it is for one reason only.

They make more profit that way.

I imagine it also ultimately works to increase the popularity of the remaining places which don't allow dogs, boosting their profits, too.

Win-win, one would think, except you might have to travel further to find a dog-free tea shop.

I don't really get it to be honest. I have three dogs, I love dogs, they're great... but I don't want to take them shopping with me or to restaurants or pubs, if I'm going out they stay home. That's the benefit of dogs over children, you don't have to take them with you everywhere you go!

I feel like COVID and lockdown produced a lot of bad dog owners who never did separation work with their dogs so can't leave them alone for fear they'll destroy the house. My three can be happily left for hours if necessary, they just loaf on the sofa until we get back.

This! Also a dog lover and owner and I don't get how, especially since lockdown, people think they're like kids and can't go anywhere without them.

What puzzles me is that shops and cafes must have had a reason for not letting in dogs previously, so what has changed? Surely it was for hygiene and food safety reasons that they weren't allowed in places where people were eating. I don't mind dogs but I don't understand why they need to be in shops and restaurants.

I think previously dogs were seen as dirty pets.

Now they're seen as family members.

Redebs · 26/04/2023 13:46

Dogs shed dried skin, hair and drool. When they pant or shake, they create a cloud of bacteria, mould spores and dander. They also leave traces of feces behind when they sit on furniture.
Some dogs carry parasites and diseases that can transmit to humans, especially children or those who are immunocompromised.

Some people have allergies to dogs.
Some are afraid of them.

Chasingadvice · 26/04/2023 12:40

Or don't allow dogs in places they have no business being in. Like places that serve food and drinks. You may be happy with dirty dogs running around you when you eat but other people are not. And yes- all dogs are dirty. Your 'perfectly clean' animal still licks other animals arses.

I’ve never had dogs running around me in dog friendly places. Had plenty of kids doing that though.

Of course I do but there is rarely any cafes left that don't allow dogs in our area so we rarely
Eat out anymore. I had to move out of the queue in iceland this morning because of a pug tucked under someone's arm.
I'm really sad that my son cannot join in much anyway and now we can't do the things we'd like to do. Even finding a holiday that didn't allow dogs was really hard work.
So yes I do. All the time. But it should t be this hard.

That sounds rubbish for you all, I’m really sorry. I don’t take my dogs to enclosed public spaces as a rule, but on the whole if I got any signals that someone had major phobia or allergies, I’d give a wide berth so as to try not to make it worse.
It’s a shame that the people most likely to ask nicely for this kind of consideration are often those least likely to want to “impose”.

Porkandbeans1 · 26/04/2023 13:48

One of my favourite local restaurants allows dogs. I love it, especially when the owners don't mind you petting them. I won't take my dog out though. I find it too stressful.

If you're scared of bacteria how can you even leave the house? There's bacteria everywhere. YOU shed dried skin, hair and maybe even drool! 😂

soggydigestives · 26/04/2023 13:51

It's because of silly entitled owners treating them as though they're human. They're animals. Should absolutely NOT be in shops, in particular food establishments. I saw a dog sat up in the booth with his mucky paws and face all over the table. Absolutely disgusting I don't know why health and safety allow it!

Teateaandmoretea · 26/04/2023 13:51

I must admit I haven’t noticed this, but I don’t go shopping much.

Dogs have always been allowed on buses though my mum said when she was a child they charged for them. So I was puzzled by this yesterday.

What has changed and is irritating is the dog indulgence and the yapping when they go out in gardens in greater numbers than before.

RichardHeed · 26/04/2023 13:51

It's grim like, and I bet people would be kicking off if a cafe was full of rotties or great danes, but small fuckerpoos seem to be fine and dandy.

This. And I've worked in many kitchens over the years, I would be more concerned about the cleanliness in there. 15 years old pot washers on a couple of quid an hour don't care.

Whereas humans are bleach clean! No chance of catching anything from a human (Let’s quickly forget the manmade COVID pandemic).

I think you forgot a couple:

  • mongrels
  • can I bring my pet tarantula?
  • one looked at me funny

You’re aware humans are animals, yes?

Missingmyusername · 26/04/2023 13:55

@SliceOfCakeCupOfTea 🤣🙈

@Naunet you aren’t wrong.

Some people like dogs. Some don’t.
I’m team dog. 🐶

But also think I’m very live and let live. If someone had an allergy- I’d move. I frequent a lot of dog friendly places, so I’m pleased more establishments allow it.

If tarantula friendly cafes suddenly started opening you wouldn’t see me for dust. I would vote with my feet and not go to those places. Isn’t it simple? Plenty of places don’t allow dogs. You don’t even know some dogs are there, most owners have taken them for a walk beforehand- they just lie there.

Lockheart · 26/04/2023 13:55

And for the poster who's horrified because dogs lick each others arses, I've got unfortunate news for you about a surprising number of people.

Thunderpunt · 26/04/2023 13:56

It's interesting, in Italy and France well behaved dogs are pretty much universally accepted in food establishments in my experience. And yet the UK, apparently as a dog loving nation seems really anti dogs in these places. I think rural pubs are ok for dogs, and it doesn't bother me if I go to a café or restaurant that does have dogs.
However as a restaurant owner I won't have dogs in, and it's nothing to do with what customers want. It's all to do with the bloody hair! My own dog moults like mad at home and it drives me potty. The thought of having to hoover up dog hair from our dark wood floors at the restaurant every time a dog comes in (and I don't care if you think they're non-shedding, those ones just tend to drop bits of leaves and twigs!) fills me with dread!

It's a sound business decision for a lot of places I'm sure. I tend to separate dog activity and socialising & shopping but I can now nip into my local store late at night for things while walking my dog. I can go into a cafe and buy a takeaway coffee which I'd never have done before as I won't leave my dog unattended. My DH has bought a pair of jeans while passing a store with our dog which had a dog-friendly sign up - he would have bought elsewhere otherwise. I'm sure it all mounts up.
