to be alarmed that more and more places are allowing dogs?

Just went to Wilko recently who had a sign up saying all dogs welcome. Went to a bistro and they allowed dogs too. Had lunch listening to small yappy dogs.

Since when did it become acceptable to allow dogs into shops and food places?

YANBU, it's ridiculous. The latest place in my neighbourhood to put up a dog friendly sign is an art gallery. I mean, why?!

7Worfs · 26/04/2023 12:39

I feel like COVID and lockdown produced a lot of bad dog owners who never did separation work with their dogs so can't leave them alone for fear they'll destroy the house.

I have a dog whisperer dog behaviourist friend and am constantly fascinated by her job. She tells me if dogs wreck stuff it’s because they aren’t looked after properly with appropriate physical and mental exercise.

I don't really get it to be honest. I have three dogs, I love dogs, they're great... but I don't want to take them shopping with me or to restaurants or pubs, if I'm going out they stay home. That's the benefit of dogs over children, you don't have to take them with you everywhere you go!

Totally agree.

Went to a RHS garden at the weekend which was blissful for the absence of dogs (except assistance dogs). I can remember when they were the only ones allowed in shops and restaurants/cafes. They seem particularly unsuited for such places and unhygienic.

Feel sorry for those that are allergic or have a phobia. Quite hard to avoid them. Those that say go elsewhere - sometimes it's not obvious it's a dog friendly place until someone walks in with one. Really can't see why they can't be left at home...

Mumsnet really hates dogs🙄
don't go.to.places that allow dogs if it's a problem for you.

Or don't allow dogs in places they have no business being in. Like places that serve food and drinks. You may be happy with dirty dogs running around you when you eat but other people are not. And yes- all dogs are dirty. Your 'perfectly clean' animal still licks other animals arses.

Runaway0 · 26/04/2023 12:42

There's too many chavs with poorly trained dogs who think it's their right to encroach on others enjoyment. What's with dogs being off lead in parks allowing them to jump up on members of the public?

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 26/04/2023 12:43

Marvellous, isn’t it! Bloody love seeing dogs in shops and the like. Wonderful.

Neededanewuserhandle · 26/04/2023 12:43

Oh goody another dog hating thread, just what we need.

Alarmed Grin

Dogs have been allowed in Wilkos for ages. I don't understand the issue there.

I can understand why people aren't happy them being on chairs etc in places that serve food but don't see an issue with a placid dog sitting under the table.

Yes, but how do you vet (har har Grin) well-behaved dogs from non-trained hell hounds? You can’t say you only allow poodles, but not XL bullies.

CrescentstarMoon · 26/04/2023 12:43

GoodChat · 26/04/2023 12:39

How is your child accidentally dropping something your fault but her dog eating something he shouldn't not her fault? Grin

I think she expected me to have seen and picked it up before Arlo ate it but he was so quick !!! She started shouting ‘oh Arlo ! No ! No ! Drop it!’ And shoving her hand in his mouth then had a go at me and said she had to see the vet as an emergency how he could die and stood in my way saying ‘give me YOUR details for the vet !’ 😳

Neededanewuserhandle · 26/04/2023 12:43

MNHQ - time for a separate section for the rabid dog haters please.

AgathaX · 26/04/2023 12:44

There are too many places allowing dogs these days, but also too many places allowing children too. It's probably for the same reasons though, trying to increase football and business.

Jaxhog · 26/04/2023 12:45

I like dogs but think there is a time and a place for them. The occasional, well-behaved dog in a pub or casual cafe is fine. But a pack of bustling dogs right next to me when I'm eating is not fine. Nor is a little dog peeing under my chair.

Too many dog owners think their dogs are little gods and far more important than other people. (This also applies to cellos)

A caravan site I stayed at does exactly this. They have a list of banned breeds and if you aren't sure (our D Dog is of indeterminate origin) they ask for photos.

CrescentstarMoon · 26/04/2023 12:46

I hope he was ok though I know chocolate can be toxic for dogs, he did look massively happy with himself I have to say 😂

LucifersLight · 26/04/2023 12:47

It’s speciesist to exclude dogs generally.

The default should be dogs allowed everywhere except when there is legitimate medical/health reasons for excluding them. Then of course a business owner can obviously make their own minds up what they want for their private business premises. Imho.

I love it in Vienna where it seems all cafes allow dogs but their human companions are more sensible there in my experience.

alloalloallo · 26/04/2023 12:47

I have a dog, I don’t take her into shops or anything like that, but I do take her into dog friendly cafes and pubs. She’s well behaved, sits under my chair and doesn’t bark. I’ve never actually witnessed anything other than well behaved dogs in any pub or cafe.

There are plenty of pubs, cafes, etc in my area where dogs aren’t allowed.

My friend owns a cafe and for her allowing dogs makes 100% financial sense.

The vast, vast, majority of her all year round customers are dog owners/walkers and since allowing dogs her trade has massively increased.

yep dog bashing/ threads every day, sometimes several a day. Actually someone started a thread last week asking why are there so many dog hating threads!

HermioneWeasley · 26/04/2023 12:49

I don’t hate dogs, I think they’re lovely. But I also think they’re unhygienic and I don’t want them in food shops and cafés. I am also allergic. I despair of places that all allow dogs in and unfortunately that’s every cafe in my village so I’m a bit stuck.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 26/04/2023 12:50

Everyone talks about this being such a new thing but my mam used to take her dog into work with her (cashier in my very popular bank in a city centre). Dog would sit under her desk all day and even customers would bring in treats. This was the 70s.

Dogs in local corner shops, dogs in pubs, dogs in the post office, dogs on buses have been a regular thing my whole life and im 30+. It's only really been the big high street retailers and restaurants that haven't been dog friendly

ThatFraggle · 26/04/2023 12:50

You'd like the dogfree board on Reddit. It charts the rise of dog worship culture.

Well that ,up to the owner isn't it?
if they want to welcome dogs that's entirely their prerogative and if posters on mumsnet wish to stay away from. Those establishments than that's up to.them.

Runaway0 · 26/04/2023 12:51

I used to work at a unit for severely autistic people we used to go for walks round the grounds. Members of the public thought it was appropriate to let their dogs off lead and bound up to severely autistic people and jump up. I told them to leash their dog as they have severe autism (very strong and could severely injure the dog if they became scared). They said I have autism too and he's friendly, I was actually 😒. Why would you walk around near a MH unit with a dog unleashed. It's putting the dog in danger some people are thick.

There is so little "chocolate" in a modern chocolate bar that unless he was tiny or your daughter was eating one of the dark luxury bars he'll almost certainly be fine.

My older one has had a few kitkats in the past with no ill effects.

Cake is far more of a danger in a cafe. Mine once got hold of two large slices of homemade carrot cake (with sultanas) and gobbled the lot. That was an expensive vet bill.
