to be alarmed that more and more places are allowing dogs?

Just went to Wilko recently who had a sign up saying all dogs welcome. Went to a bistro and they allowed dogs too. Had lunch listening to small yappy dogs.

Since when did it become acceptable to allow dogs into shops and food places?

It’s simply a business decision. No one is forced to go to these places.

LadyKenya · 26/04/2023 13:21

People can always vote with their feet. I personally would have no desire to eat in an establishment that allowed any dogs, other than assistance dogs in them.

Is there a crew of mumsnetters on rotation for starting threads on dogs?

Yeah they are part of the gang that starts the weekly "why is everyone so mean and nasty" threads as well.

Human children come before dogs
Children are the next generation, they grow up, contribute to society
Your dog is a useless shitting nuisance

You have missed the point. When I go out to eat, I have no dogs with me, ever. A toddler wandering around dropping food in a cafe is an irritant and potential hazard to people. There’s no issue about whether they come before my dogs because I don’t put my dogs in the kind of environment where they’ll have to deal with unsupervised toddlers.
But I guess that’s irrelevant because you were dying to say that and weren’t going to let my actual words influence you 🙄

Allowing children in pubs and cafes is ill thought out because it's fine if it's one toddler sleeping but easily gets out of hand with 5-10 kids running about

Same way dogs should be controlled and not barking/running about/bothering people eating I believe children shouldn't be screaming/running about/ bothering people eating in restaurants etc either. Both are annoying. And if there was loads of either happening I would not go/leave. Quiet, well generally behaved versions of either are fine.

It's disgusting. I have a three year old who has severe complex needs and cannot be in an environment with dogs in. People shrug and say 'I'd rather be with dogs than kids' but humans aren't deathly allergic to other humans. My son is deathly allergic to dogs. I've witnessed several dog fights/disagreement because dogs fight over food. It must be awful for the animals. It's warm, sometimes too warm for a fur coated animal in a cafe and smells nice but I'd imagine confusing, then there are other dogs in a confined space. It's just horrible.

So presumably you exclusively take your child to non-dog friendly places then and you check if somewhere is dog friendly?

lightinthebox · 26/04/2023 13:26

I find it odd and quite unbelievable that no one on MN has ever encountered a dog that wasn't untrained and out of control. Not saying they don't exist, but MN only ever experience badly trained dogs.

Or more likely, all dogs can appear out of control when you actively hate them enough to start constant anti dog threads.

NeedToChangeName · 26/04/2023 13:28

I don't think dogs belong in cafes etc. Recently, I was out for a meal and a dog peed all over the floor. I thought that was disgusting

DidyouNO · 26/04/2023 13:29

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea
Of course I do but there is rarely any cafes left that don't allow dogs in our area so we rarely
Eat out anymore. I had to move out of the queue in iceland this morning because of a pug tucked under someone's arm.
I'm really sad that my son cannot join in much anyway and now we can't do the things we'd like to do. Even finding a holiday that didn't allow dogs was really hard work.
So yes I do. All the time. But it should t be this hard.

Violinist64 · 26/04/2023 13:30

I am a dog lover and owner but l think that dogs should not be allowed in shops or cafés except for guide dogs and obvious assistance dogs. It is unhygienic and many people are afraid of dogs.

Tilliemolly · 26/04/2023 13:31

dog entitlement people,

BSB30 · 26/04/2023 13:31

I'm a dog owner but I think it's very unhygienic taking dogs into places where you eat (aside from assistance dogs who are well trained etc). I would find it stressful myself with my dog sat begging for food and trying to play with all the other dogs.

Plus other people might not want it when they are trying to eat.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 26/04/2023 13:32

I feel like COVID and lockdown produced a lot of bad dog owners who never did separation work with their dogs so can't leave them alone for fear they'll destroy the house. My three can be happily left for hours if necessary, they just loaf on the sofa until we get back.

Yes, definitely. Plus the increase in the idea that it is cruel to leave a dog home alone for more than an hour / two hours. So of course they have to go everywhere with the owner then! Our dog is fine at home. We built up the time she could be left from puppyhood and she will simply sleep (usually on our bed because she can get away with it if we're out) all day if she's left alone. Much better than dragging her around busy, noisy places with loads of people and other animals stressing her out. But I've been accused of animal cruelty on here for saying that dogs can be left at home during the day and been told I've caused my dog to have depression (because she sleeps so much!). Bonkers.

leilani83 · 26/04/2023 13:33

I'm Team Dog. I wish they'd stop allowing people to most places! 😉🐕

Trinityloop · 26/04/2023 13:34

My most mumsnet encounter in real life was about this
I once asked a pub if it was dog friendly, they said it wasn't so I said in a neutral tone "ah nevermind" and went to walk out.The customer by the door had a rant about how I should leave my dog at home, that I was entitled etc

The things is that as I had my dog outside, If it wasn't dog friendly then it didn't work for me. It's no more entitled then asking if they have suitable food options, or allow children.

SquareRootOfAllEvil · 26/04/2023 13:34

Jaxhog · 26/04/2023 12:45

I like dogs but think there is a time and a place for them. The occasional, well-behaved dog in a pub or casual cafe is fine. But a pack of bustling dogs right next to me when I'm eating is not fine. Nor is a little dog peeing under my chair.

Too many dog owners think their dogs are little gods and far more important than other people. (This also applies to cellos)

What have you got against cellos? They definitely should be allowed everywhere - take up a lot of space, but generally clean and make a much more pleasant sound than dogs or children…

mn29 · 26/04/2023 13:35

I hate that everyone is expected to like dogs just because a lot of people love them.

Do I mind you liking dogs and owning a dog? Not at all? Do I object to your dog running up to me and licking/jumping up on me? Absolutely. Would I like to eat in a restaurant/coffee shop etc and not have to contend with dogs? Yes.

Obviously no need for a question mark after not at all.

Let me know when you can call house

to be alarmed that more and more places are allowing dogs?
DisquietintheRanks · 26/04/2023 13:39

I don't think that objecting to dogs pissing and shitting (and barking, and jumping up) in the places that you eat and shop makes you a dog hater, does it?

I've seen dogs pissing on low shelving in Home Bargins. And the Silverburn shopping centre in Glasgow tried going dog friendly then had to backtrack due to fouling problems. Grim.

Silverburn to stop dog friendly trial amid 'dog poo' spotted in food court

The Barrhead Road shopping complex made the announcement on social media this morning that their dog-friendly trial will be coming to an end following feedback from customers.

I feel so mixed on this. I work in a high end boutique and we allow dogs. 90% of the dogs are calm, well behaved and cause no issues. Plus we all love seeing them and saying hi to them. However, the other 10% are either chaotic or like to pee everywhere.

That being said, we get a lot more well behaved dogs than we get well behaved children… (and I say this as a mum myself). The amount of parents who let their kids come in and cause carnage is far more frustrating to me than the odd dog peeing. Again, I say this as a mum to a very restless and easily annoyed toddler so I’m not hating on kids in general.

Dangerous, unhygienic animals with entitled owners. YANBU.

Good god, why do people say things like this? WE, human beings, invited dogs into our lives, we made them dependant on us, we used them to our benefit - to help the blind, to find bombs, to find people who are lost, to protect us and livestock from predators, to find bodies, to hunt, to search for drugs, to help us herd other animals, to alert us to epileptic fits etc. They save FAR, FAR more lives than they damage and despite being animals with far less intelligence than us, we hold them to a higher standard than we hold ourselves, expecting them to behave like robots. More dogs are beaten and hurt by people than the other way around, but who cares, they’re just animals, right?

I fucking HATE the human race, absolute parasites, we just take and take.

I wonder how many people (including the cafe owners) were irritated by your child wandering around dropping food? Personally I see it as my responsibility to train my dog to drop on command, and wouldn’t take him to a cafe, but I wouldn’t appreciate a toddler bimbling around dropping food on the floor, and would consider her a trip hazard. Perhaps controlling your child will lead to less confrontation?

We were walking out as we had finished and we’re going home …… dd was just holding the rest of her chocolate to eat on the way to the station. She had sat down the whole time up till then
