to be alarmed that more and more places are allowing dogs?

Just went to Wilko recently who had a sign up saying all dogs welcome. Went to a bistro and they allowed dogs too. Had lunch listening to small yappy dogs.

Since when did it become acceptable to allow dogs into shops and food places?

I like dogs but i don't want them in clothes shops nor particularly in cafes unless there's an outdoor area.

Went to a cafe for brunch last week where two dogs took against each other and we were trying to catch up with friends with a backdrop of sharp barking. Really inconsiderate to make other people put up with that.

Go to places that don't allow dogs..... problem sorted!

There may not be any locally! Problem not sorted…

nomoredrivingytu · 01/05/2023 17:00

@SquareRootOfAllEvil travel to ones that are...... problem sorted!

And don't say well I don't want to travel, then stay home.

But the cafes etc are entitled to invite dogs if they want, you don't own them, you don't run them!

SquareRootOfAllEvil · 01/05/2023 17:31

I don’t personally mind sharing cafe space with well-behaved dogs, so no need to travel, which is just as well.

But I think it’s unfair that people who can’t share space with animals are being pushed out of places. I literally don’t know where my nearest dog-free cafe would be - there are none in my local town, and Googling “dog-free cafes” just seems to bring up dog-friendly ones.

I would like there to be more options.

You are completely missing the point. The number of places that don't accept dogs is shrinking, but as long as you are welcome with your dog then sod everyone else Hmm

BTW I like dogs and am not allergic to them, but I am grown up and responsible enough to understand that not everyone is like me.

I agree @SquareRootOfAllEvil

And that's life! As a proprietor it's their choice to decide their clients.

It is indeed but I think we do need to be clear what we mean when we say go to places without dogs and there may be very few.

BSB30 · 01/05/2023 18:55

I wonder if it depends on the area because everywhere round where I live, doesn't allow dogs in as far as I know. Even the local cafe.

RampantIvy · 01/05/2023 19:46

Our local shopping mall only accepts assistance dogs.

Oh so if I gave you a choice of a plate for your dinner, and I said this plate has been licked by a dog, this one hasn't... They've both been through the dishwasher....You'd happily choose the dog licked one?

I would not care. It has been cleaned.
My dog licks my plates at home.

You wouldn't hesitate to choose the dog licked plate??

Really??.

What if they choose to decide they're only serving men? Or white people? That's their choice...

Inkblue · 01/05/2023 20:11

There was a dog wandering around in Aldi the other day. No lead, no sign it was an assistance dog, though it seemed to be owned by someone, and it got under my feet. I reported it to the manager who was horrified and went to find it.

I would not care, as they will have been properly cleaned.

I can't think of a scenario where choosing between the two would be presented as a choice anyway... so a bit odd for you to attack my hypothetical answer.

Poopoolittlekitten · 01/05/2023 20:14

Go to places that don’t allow dogs then.

As not liking dogs isn't a protected characteristic I reckon that's a false equivalent

Divorcedalongtime · 02/05/2023 00:48

I know I hate it. The owners never stop the dogs walking up to people and sniff and the stench . I loathe it

@00100001

They're not choosing to exclude anyone. They've not got a sign on the door saying "if you've not got a dog, you can't come in". They are merely looking at their business model and how much revenue they can achieve. Which is sensible.

If you don't want to use the place because you don't like dogs or have an allergy etc, that's up to you.

You'll also see a sign on menus etc, saying may contain nuts, which would therefore mean that someone with a severe nut allergy can't use the place.

You're trying to liken this to apartheid which is absolutely disgusting and shameful.

If I were you I'd ask for your post to be removed.

Go to places that don’t allow dogs then.

It really is THAT simple! People are just being awkward for the sake of it.

AlwaysGinPlease · 02/05/2023 06:59

What you are failing to understand is that in some areas the number of places that allow dogs far outnumber the places that don't.

And these places don't all have notices to say whether they do or not. So someone allergic to dogs could enter a premises that a dog had been in half an hour previously.

What we need is for all premises to display a Dogs Welcome/Dogs not Welcome notice.

It's that simple.

NB. I am not allergic to dogs, nor do I dislike them, but I can see both sides.

Dungaree · 02/05/2023 07:17

I'm a dog owner. I do eat in cafe or restaurants that allow dogs. Yuck!

nomoredrivingytu · 02/05/2023 07:17

@RampantIvy I think if I had an allergy that severe it would be prudent to assume that an absence of a sign saying no dogs allowed, would mean dogs were allowed.

But presumably you eat in your own home? That the dog is allowed in?

doubleoseven · 02/05/2023 07:37

It surprises that me most people don't seem to be concerned with the hygiene aspect of having dogs in places serving food.
Many people don't treat their pets for parasites and there's a huge increase in raw feeding, these pets pose a risk to human health to the point pregnant vets have to wear ppe to handle these dogs- see attached.
However since every GP I've ever spoken to on the subject has told me they get no training on zoonotic disease I don't expect your average cafe owner has much of a clue either and I very much doubt they're using cleaning chemicals that kills these bugs/parasites.

I don’t understand the trend for feeding dogs raw meat… My DB feeds their family dog raw chicken instead of dog food. It’s a lovely dog but I don’t like when it tries to be affectionate and lick, purely for thinking of all the salmonella and whatever else lives on raw chicken being all over his mouth.

The dogs breath always has a poultry smell to it too🤢
