to be alarmed that more and more places are allowing dogs?

Just went to Wilko recently who had a sign up saying all dogs welcome. Went to a bistro and they allowed dogs too. Had lunch listening to small yappy dogs.

Since when did it become acceptable to allow dogs into shops and food places?

I was in my local cafe and a huge (well behaved) dog (Beethoven like) was at a nearby table. The dog shook itself in that way dogs usually do, and slabbers from its mouth went all over the nearby tables and into peoples food. It put me off my own food and we left.

for me, dogs are lovely but should not be where people are eating for this very reason.

This is disgusting, I think I would have actually been sick 🤢.

Don't worry, it didn't happen.

How do you know?

We used to have an English setter and he used to shake himself and slobber everywhere all the time.

Is this the best defence you have? ;-)

People need to remember that this ‘anti-dog’ sentiment has not always been there. Dogs and people have got on reasonably well. I don’t like dogs but have always stayed away from them, and their owners have generally looked after them properly. Coexisting, no problem.

It’s just now that due to the increase in sheer numbers of dogs, the number of shit owners has gone up. (Though on this thread a large number of decent owners has spoken up which is reassuring).

It is possible to live together sensibly if dog owners take responsibility and people don’t let kids run up to strange dogs. I don’t get why so many dog owners disbelieve the stories or try and defend appalling behaviour by citing the existence of children.

Look after your dogs properly (remember they are animals not humans) and these threads will disappear.

Well said.

I agree that the increasing number of inconsiderate dog owners is the reason that people start threads like this. There have been hysterical over reactions from both sides - fanatic "love me love my dog" posters and "I hate dogs" posters

givemecoffeenow · 28/04/2023 16:31

I don’t mind well behaved dogs being in shops/ pubs with responsible owners.

Our local pub has a lot of people bringing in their dogs and they generally just sleep under the table while their owners eat their lunch lol.

I think once it gets to a certain time though dogs shouldn’t be allowed in the same way children aren’t. Just because I don’t think it’s fair on the dogs.

Me and DP went into the local last week as they had a band on and some guy in there brought his poor 2 pugs along with him for a night out. They were visibly stressed at the noise and not enjoying the music. Must have been hurting their ears. I think there’s a time and a place.

Mind you this might not be the norm. Our local does seem to be very relaxed, in the school holidays there’s always people bringing in their kids late while the parents drink… 🤔

It’s speciesist to exclude dogs generally.

It really is. I want to eat at restaurants that are inclusive and welcoming to all, goddamit.

I want to check the kitchen to make sure they are friendly to rats, and cockroaches, and I need an open window so pigeons can come in easily and enjoy a pile of rotting bread with me at my table. And please ensure there's sugar on the floor for the ants.

This cracked me up 😂😂🤣🤣

Loveyou3000 · 28/04/2023 17:17

Maybe avoid Prague... They let dogs in most places, even the zoo.

BSB30 · 28/04/2023 17:17

I don't agree that dogs should be allowed in food establishments or retail shops either. My concern would be allergies for those buying the clothes for example. If a dog had brushed up against it, it could cause all sorts of problems. Also, I'm sure there are plenty of dogs who have urinated on clothes. Can you imagine if staff didn't know and someone bought a wee stained item of clothing?

I'm a dog owner (I have children too) and my dog only goes places with me if she will be staying outside. So if we go for a walk and there's 2 of us in case the other needs to go into a shop. I don't let my dog go up to anyone as I appreciate they may not want that. She is also kept on a lead at all times.

I think this is the sanest post on this thread. I have a dog and do exactly as you do and agree with everything you have written. The only exception should be for guide dogs and other bona fide assistance dogs.

Given that some big chain shops like John Lewis and Waterstones allow dogs, it's odd that we don't hear about people having attacks of hives in the men's jeans section or buying urine-soaked books weekly, isn't it.

Or maybe, that doesn't happen and this is silly whataboutery.

Dilemma19 · 28/04/2023 18:54

I love dogs but I don't think they should be allowed everywhere especially eating places. We went to a really nice restaurant recently and someone had there dog there who was really annoying walking around the table and then eventually pissed in the middle of 3 other tables. All these people asked to be moved, and because it was full they left! So they lost out to 3 tables all because of bloody stupid dogs everywhere.

I was in a pub/restaurant. Dog pissed next to me. Landlady picked a bartowel up and came and rubbed the floor with it. She then dumped the dog pee towel at the end of the bar and walked off for any bar staff to use.

BSB30 · 28/04/2023 20:58

@Lockheart Why would we hear about it though? Unless you were there when it happened, unlikely to find out about it.

The fact you are ‘alarmed’ seems like an overreaction tbh. We are talking about people with dogs not AK-47’s. Let’s also be entirely honest as well the ratio of dogs to humans is still pretty favourable - it’s not like places are overrun with them like a cockroach infestation.

I do agree that happy dogs are a nuisance but not all dogs are like this. Personally I find happy kids as infuriating but I’m not alarmed that they are also allowed within my space. It is the way of the world. This space is for all of us to use whether we like it or not try not to be too alarmed by that it’s not good for one’s stress levels!

They didn’t lose out on 3 tables because of “bloody stupid dogs everywhere” It was one dog who by the sounds of it had a very irresponsible owner. Let’s not blame dogs being everywhere for the act of one owner and their dog. Unfortunately as there is no licence to own a dog not everyone is attentive and responsible but not all dogs and their owners are like this.

I’m sure there would have been a dedicated thread to said incident if it had occurred.

Whenever people post about an unusual personal experience which I did not witness, I am going to start posting ‘that didn’t happen’.

Or not. Because I am not stupid.

People love a moan and a good chance at a compo claim so I’m sure we’d hear about it on a thread on here or next to a sad looking selfie in the daily fail!
