to be alarmed that more and more places are allowing dogs?

Just went to Wilko recently who had a sign up saying all dogs welcome. Went to a bistro and they allowed dogs too. Had lunch listening to small yappy dogs.

Since when did it become acceptable to allow dogs into shops and food places?

Places that allow dogs never end up being overrun with the animals. Rarely will they be yapping and pretty much never running around. The same can’t be said about toddlers! It’s great to have more places to take dogs out with you. There are still more places that don’t than do, so if you don’t like it there’s still plenty of options for you.

CommonsenseMumAndNanna · 28/04/2023 08:36

Beyond rare examples. If you have any venue that permits dogs to behave like that then avoid it. Dogs are usually not allowed off lead, and while you might get the odd yap/bark it’s no worse than crying babies or over-loud adults.

RampantIvy · 28/04/2023 08:39

There is a farm near me that is open to the public. They have two cafes - one for dog owners with their dogs and one that doesn't allow dogs. Obviously they have the space to do this, but this way everyone is happy.

its a bizarre british thing where people seem to care more for dogs than they do for their spouses or kids, best one is when someone pays 40 a month for an insurance for a dog and u ask how much do you pay for your own/partners life insurance- 0 lol

It is a very anglicised trait. I think that society is just more insular now and people are more socially-inept, so they pretend that their dogs are something that they're not.

Kind of like having an imaginary friend for lonely children, but instead adults pretend that their dogs have human qualities.

Airspice · 28/04/2023 08:40

I’m not a dog hater at all but dogs should not be allowed in any establishment that sells food. Whether that be restaurants, cafes or shops. It’s just not hygienic.

Up to those businesses 🤷‍♀️. I could say the same as @7Worfs last sentence about kids.

There's always one that has to compare dogs to kids.

Louder for those at the back.
Dogs 👏 Are 👏 Not 👏 Comparable 👏 To 👏 Kids!

And no, dogs aren't 'better' either 🙄

I cannot stand dogs.
I don't know your dog, I don't care if it's 'friendly'.
It smells, I don't want it jumping up at me, I don't want it sniffing at me, keep your disgusting PET (note, not a child!) away from me.

I sort of get your point but to someone who doesn’t have kids (not me) it’s not that different to kids being allowed anywhere and everywhere and to be honest there’s a lot of dogs out there that are far better behaved than the feral kids you see running around in places. I know pre kids we would often make say a restaurant choice based on likelihood of kids being there.

Jesus Christ 🙄

These comparisons to kids make me want to rebound my head off of a wall.

RampantIvy · 28/04/2023 08:49

I think the reason that the dog lovers are complaining about the "I hate dogs" threads is because quite often it is the self entitled dog owners who post on them and give all dog owners a bad name.

I know a lot of dog owners, and none of them are self entitled about wanting to take their dog everywhere with them.

We always had a dog when I was growing up. If we holidayed in this country they always came with us, which is why we aalwys camped. If we went abroad they went into kennels. The dog stayed at home if we went shopping or out for a meal, and if we went out for the day we would take a picnic so that the dog could come with us. Or if we couldn't bring the dog a neighbour would let it out to go to the toilet.

Support dogs aside there is no need to have a dog constantly by your side 24/7.

Utterly fed up of dogs being everywhere too.

At my youngest DC school the head brings in his dog EVERY DAY!

I was at primary school in the 1960s where the head teacher brought his Great Dane in EVERY DAY. Its name was Bruce and he was adorable. No child left that school afraid of dogs.

gannett · 28/04/2023 09:02

Dogs, cars, trans people and retail staff are the four things MN is truly batshit and toxic about.

I'm all for dogs in more places. I'm a dog lover but I don't think I want to own one yet, so I'm absolutely delighted each and every time I meet one out and about.

RampantIvy · 28/04/2023 09:05

People just need to be more considerate.
Why do some dog owners just not get that not everyone loves dogs?
I don't mind them BTW.

wildinthecountry · 28/04/2023 09:09

Typical MN hysteria 🙄.

strangerperson · 28/04/2023 09:11

I don't mind dogs in general but in food places I think it's unhygienic. Last time I was in a cafe where dogs were there, the waitress was carrying our lunch and she walked past a table with a dog which then decided to shake its fur whilst my food and drinks on the tray was exposed to that.

RampantIvy · 28/04/2023 09:11

On both sides IMO.
There is a middle ground.

strangerperson · 28/04/2023 09:13

@LadyGrinningSoul85 yes of course they aren't comparable to kids. I read somewhere that you are entitled to a kid free life but you're aren't entitled to a kid free world!

The vast majority of dog owners I've ever encountered are considerate to the point of being apologetic that their dog exists. Most of the time I'm the one saying "no, it's OK, not only do I not mind that your dog is saying hello but I am enjoying it!"

The batshittery is the frothing rage and demands that Something Must Be Done and the sheer bile based around the tiniest minority of bad behaviour.

Human children come before dogs
Children are the next generation, they grow up, contribute to society
Your dog is a useless shitting nuisance

I love dogs, but I do agree with this sentence Grin

WhatTheHeckyPeck · 28/04/2023 09:37

All this " I'd rather a dog than kids in cafes" rhetoric makes me laugh. When the day comes that a kid is lying on a floor in front of me licking their balls and arse whilst I'm trying to eat, then I might agree.

As long as they’re not using your tongue, why would you care?

Having a poo in the middle of a cafe and then eating it 😂

It was directed at me. My terrier does fit that description, I call her similar on a regular basis 😂

EVEN LOUDER FOR THE SMUGGOS AT THE FRONT:

YES 👏THEY 👏BLOODY 👏 WELL 👏 ARE!! 😂(Comparable - not necessarily 'better')

I mean, they literally are!! Kids are loud, sticky, don't shut-up, think they're the centre of everything.... Last week I was at an event that was supposed to be a lovely immersive art exhibit and it was totally fooked by 3 under-10s treating it as a playground. Parents doing nothing at all to control them. I mean, surely, SURELY, you can see that they absolutely are vaguely comparable in annoyingness?!

I think it's daft how many places they're allowed but, as both a parent and dog owner - they are SO SIMILAR!! Only difference is I generally can't tolerate other peoples' children as well as I love tolerate other peoples' dogs.

I mean, this is no great political debate, but given the choice between walking into a cafe with 10 dogs or 10 kids I would pick the dogs every time.

ArmWrestlingWithChasNDave · 28/04/2023 10:18

Almost all the reasons anti-dog people give for not wanting dogs in public places apply equally to children.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 28/04/2023 10:24

Wah wah wah, dog haters, why do you hate dogs, dogs are my CHILDREN so much nicer than ACTUAL children etc.

YANBU OP.
