to be alarmed that more and more places are allowing dogs?

Just went to Wilko recently who had a sign up saying all dogs welcome. Went to a bistro and they allowed dogs too. Had lunch listening to small yappy dogs.

Since when did it become acceptable to allow dogs into shops and food places?

It really is as simple as not going to dog friendly places if you hate them THAT much.

In some areas (like mine) it’s getting almost impossible to find places that aren’t dog-friendly, though - the balance has really shifted over the last couple of years.

I’m pretty indifferent to dogs so no need to avoid them (although I wish some of the ones round here were better trained), but it would be really difficult for anyone with allergies or an actual phobia.

AskMeMore · 27/04/2023 13:07

Exactly the same though as those complaining about badly behaved kids. They just get told to places not welcoming of kids. In reality almost impossible to find.
We all have to learn how to share spaces better, people and animals.

I suspect the reason why many hate dogs is because they know that a far bigger segment of the general public will stop and fuss over a dog but not their child. It’s jealousy, basically.

I work with someone who gets cross a lot about how nobody will stop and ask about or fuss over her “gorgeous bundle” but they will over “some random mutt”.

As for care homes etc. I’m hoping for more for your kids than to do that job - I hope that care homes no longer exist and there’ll be a way to end your own life with dignity when you get to the point where someone would have to wipe your arse for you. Would also stop the endless nonsense of “you must tolerate my obnoxious sticky children because they’ll be wiping your bum one day” or whatever.

You are deluded if you think this is the reason. People who do not like dogs do not care if people fuss over slobbering filthy mutts.

Imagine the headline:
"MAN'S ARM RIPPED OFF IN TESCO DOG ATTACK"
Tesco frantically trying to cover it up whilst multiple footages of the attack with blood sprayed all over the chiller cabinets are uploaded on social media.
I strongly suspect that would put an end to all the dog friendliness.

Don't be so stupid, never seen any ordinary dog in a Supermarket.

I think an attack is going to be the only way to reverse the dog friendly policies.

Only guide dogs or assistance dogs, I live in a town maybe it's different in a city.

I live in a city and have never seen a non-assistance dog in a supermarket.

Only guide dogs are allowed in supermarkets. Regular pet dogs are not.

Tanith · 27/04/2023 13:44

I've been asked to allow a parent to bring her dog to toddler group.
I refused, but I'm aware of a group that does allow a dog in.

YouJustDoYou · 27/04/2023 13:45

I wouldn't mind if the owners actually had control over their animals so they don't jump up all the time, but so many just bray out the name of the dog over and over whilst the dog ignores them completely.

No way would I allow someone's dog in with toddlers!! That's insane.

Why would you take your dog to a toddler group?

There's a man in my local Tesco that walks about with his husky
I kid you not🤬

I've experienced this often, not with dogs but young children.

AlwaysGinPlease · 27/04/2023 13:57

@Elphame

Wow. Your poor dogs. Grapes , raisins currants and sultanas are toxic for ALL dogs. Regardless of breed etc. you should know this as an owner.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 27/04/2023 14:03

I will admit that I just shake my head when I read some of the stories on these threads about dogs pissing on clothes, climbing on tables in cafes, getting into fights in pubs etc.

I just don't believe these stories are true! At least not most of them.
I grew up with dogs, our local shops, pubs, cafes etc are all dog friendly, my friends and family still have dogs so I'm regularly in these places with dogs and have never seen half of what people are talking about. My parents own a dog who is absolutely not friendly either. We took him to a pub once, realised it was more stress for us to keep him calm so just didn't take him back. Which is what the majority of experienced dog owners would do.

Is it different in city centre type places? Urban dogs Vs rural dogs?

Agreed. Had dogs my whole life, frequented many a Dog friendly establishment many times over the years and I have NEVER seen any such nonsense happening as reported by the Anti Dog Brigade! Ever!

I have however seen countless badly behaved children...

I think it might be - the dogs I’ve seen in pubs at the end / in the middle of a long country walk do not seem to be the same as some of the yappy accessories in some town cafes…

@AlwaysGinPlease yet it is mostly dogs who are banned and not children....

Silverrocks · 27/04/2023 14:30

I hate it, of course service dogs are different and I think some pubs allowing dogs is great so people have a choice, but when it seems to be everywhere now there's no escape from them. Not everyone likes dogs yet wherever you go you're likely to have one snaffling round your feet, shedding and stinking the place.

No idea! It sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.

Yellowdays · 27/04/2023 14:55

Here dogs are allowed in certain restaurants, but it would be uncommon to see more than one at any particular time. So I thinks it's a fuss over nothing. I don't have a dog either.
