to be alarmed that more and more places are allowing dogs?

Just went to Wilko recently who had a sign up saying all dogs welcome. Went to a bistro and they allowed dogs too. Had lunch listening to small yappy dogs.

Since when did it become acceptable to allow dogs into shops and food places?

Just stay home if you are that concerned about coming across a dog...problem solved.

Some people really just like to complain and be miserable about everything.

BSB30 · 27/04/2023 00:38

@Missingmyusername I am now having nightmarish images of a tarantula filled cafe 😳😂

@AlwaysGinPlease Its not as simple as 'just get over your fear'. Anxiety and phobias can be debilitating and can make life miserable. Additionally if the phobia is accompanied by additional needs, it won't be possible for them to get over it.

I must be living on another planet because I have never seen dogs in shops, restaurants or cafes. I didn't even know it was a thing until this thread and another one I was on. I would have definitely noticed it as I would think it was odd because of thinking they weren't allowed in.

@Blossomtoes Absolutely gorgeous dog 🐶

@WalkingAwayNow I have to agree with you there, I cannot stand the smell of wet dog. Vile.

ALongHardWinter · 27/04/2023 02:35

I don't have a dog,but I love them. I think it's great that they're being allowed into more public places now. Rather them than screaming, whingeing, badly behaved children. I have my ears assaulted on a regular basis by screeching kids on public transport,or in coffee shops. I honestly can't say the same about any dogs that have been there. I must say I'm rather surprised at all the dog hating on Mumsnet.

We get it, lots of people don't like dogs on mn.
Real life is like a different world 🙄

Different how?

But like any additional needs, you can’t change every aspect of the world around you to fit them, partly because everyone’s are different. I say this as a mum in an ND family where both myself and my husband have mobility issues (his due to micro haemorrhage, mine have improved and I am no longer in a wheelchair or needing a stick). You have to pre-plan things and go to the things that are accessible. I don’t think enough is truly accessible yet, there could still be plenty of improvements, but I also don’t expect every cafe or attraction to suit our needs. Equally, as someone who’s had serious mental illness, it is up to yourself (or you as a parent for your child) to work out techniques that help. No, it may not be possible to overcome some phobias when someone has additional needs and it makes life harder, but there are provisions in society for those who struggle with dogs.

I don’t have dogs, but I also don’t have an issue with dogs. However, some of the comments on the dog threads in relation to additional needs and disability are confusing and not really in touch with reality. Society don’t shut down all loud entertainment because some people cannot cope with loud noise, or shut down all attractions that cannot make themselves safe for those at high risk of stroke or seizure, or those that change stairs to a ramp and a lift to make them accessible for those with mobility problems. For a start, there are plenty of clashing needs. However, it’s also about learning to manage your own needs in life. There have to be reasonable adjustments for that, but not a complete ban of everything that doesn’t personally suit you.

I don't really get it to be honest. I have three dogs, I love dogs, they're great... but I don't want to take them shopping with me or to restaurants or pubs, if I'm going out they stay home. That's the benefit of dogs over children, you don't have to take them with you everywhere you go!

I feel like COVID and lockdown produced a lot of bad dog owners who never did separation work with their dogs so can't leave them alone for fear they'll destroy the house. My three can be happily left for hours if necessary, they just loaf on the sofa until we get back.

This, all this 👏

Velvian · 27/04/2023 07:34

I have a dog, I've grown up with dogs, but I have never taken my dog into a cafe or shop, or even into a town centre.

It is madness. I don't think any 'dog people' are taking their dogs to shops and cafes, it's people with fur babies doing this. It must be absolutely horrible for people that are scared of dogs at the moment.

People have no boundaries. Dogs tied up outside school, a few times a Cane Corso with cropped ears being held by a child.

Most people in my extended family have dogs and I've never known any of them to take the dog to school or to a shop, it is not appropriate.

That’s why I wrote ‘for me’. I appreciate not everyone will agree. It just makes me heave. I wish it didn’t.

But why is the defence of dogs that kids are worse? It’s not just you that always says this. Screeching badly-behaved kids can make life difficult; dogs can too. Why do kids keep being mentioned? Doesn’t make the dog problem any less worse.

You and @BreviloquentBastard have it spot on. People’s behaviour around dogs has changed greatly. That’s why so many threads appear these days. You sound responsible. So many here don’t.

It’s ill-thought because once it’s allowed it can get out of hand very easily.

yeah, two dogs growling/barking at each other in the pub - which one leaves when they are both with people eating their dinner? awkward

Neither? Pubs aren't exactly quite just move one to a different table or ignore it. Honestly the dog would happily sit on my feet it's DS who will be making a racket

greenel · 27/04/2023 08:09

Must say I have noticed this more since pandemic.

I love dogs and have owned them but would never think to take them to good places and shops or even pubs. I didn't want them to have to sit still under a table for hours without freedom to roam or accidentally eat something off or wander around a store they can't even appreciate. Personally think it's very selfish of the owners - dogs are not humans we should just expect to accompany us everywhere around the daily business of life.

I'm also noticing many more dogs on the tube at rush hour. I feel very sorry for the animals as rush hour is awful for humans all cramped together, how much worse for an animal who can't move or stretch and when it's a small breed - I'm always concerned someone will stumble over them or injure them accidentally. Dogs on seats however is unhygienic and unsociable. And making life harder for your cleaners.

A lot of dog owners don't really understand dogs or know how to train them. Seen this happen in pubs quite often now - dogs who have not been socialised with other dogs (or even people) kicking off. Or having them off leash in crowded places or parks. I find it selfish of the owners - and not pleasant for a dog should the worst happen.

greenel · 27/04/2023 08:10

Food places

CleverLilViper · 27/04/2023 08:13

If you have a problem with dogs in those places you can always choose to not go there and to go somewhere else.

Swear to god MN likes to make problems that don’t actually give exist. Yes some places accept dogs. Plenty of places don’t. Go to those places and quit your whining that every single place doesn’t cater to your every wit, whim and desire.

FFS.

Good post. Yes I feel sorry for the dogs too. And wonder how their owners would feel if their dog received an aggressive response from someone in a cafe.

’Dogs on seats however is unhygienic and unsociable.’

I remember on a thread here, somebody saying that they let their small dog sit on train tables. The tables off which people eat. Because their dog ‘liked the view’. I imagine not all dog owners would think this was appropriate…

Lovetotravel123 · 27/04/2023 08:35

My father was bitten by a dog as a child and so is frightened of them. My son and husband are allergic. They don’t have a choice about these things but dog owners do have a choice. It’s not very fair.

There's going to be more anti-dog aggression in response to the massive rise in untrained dogs and owners, but owners will pretend to be shocked by it.

That was me! What you forgot to say is that I also said that I cleaned it afterwards which is a lot more than many do. The other day, I got there and the person next to me was leaving their tissues on the desk after blowing their nose. I moved. I know which one I reached be next to!

A lot of dog owners don't really understand dogs or know how to train them
The irony of this statement! MN is full of posters convinced they are experts in dogs behaviours and needs yet are clearly clueless to the fact that dogs have différents needs depending on their breed, age, and social upbringing. Some indeed would be much happier at home for 4 hours alone than in a crowded place. Others are known not to cope alone more than an hour or so and thrive in social and mental stimulation and love to be out and about.

But these posters are if course experts! Like it's been said, my social life with my dog is absolutely nothing like MN. I'm still to meet someone who claims to suffer badly from a dog allergy and I'm still to experience all that awful behaviour in my local park that seem to be a daily occurence here. Still, at least in makes for entertaining reading!

Was fairly surprised to see the Gaucho restaurant near my office advertising being dog friendly. It seems to pitch itself as a swanky glam place. Seemed wrong.

Agreed.

I like dogs, and in the main I have no issues with them.

But it's frustrating how they put animals (or anything else frankly) before the welfare and rights of people ATM.

It's as if humans don't matter anymore

KimberleyClark · 27/04/2023 09:58

We don’t have a dog currently but dogsit for neighbours and family. I wouldn’t want to take them shopping but do like to take them to coffee shops/pubs/away for a weekend once in a while. We know a great country hotel where dog owners have their own dining room and extra sausage for the dog provided at breakfast upon request.

Again, who will be wiping your bum when your in a care home? Someone's kid possibly. Such a shame humans can't be beamed down well adjusted to life at 40 isn't it?

No surely by then dogs will have been trained to do that too 😂
Care workers are underpaid and it seems most people prefer dogs to humans anyway 🤷‍♀️

@thehorsehasnowbolted Completely agree that humans don't matter anymore. This is why some dog owners tell people to get over their fear of dogs.

I suspect the reason why many hate dogs is because they know that a far bigger segment of the general public will stop and fuss over a dog but not their child. It’s jealousy, basically.

I work with someone who gets cross a lot about how nobody will stop and ask about or fuss over her “gorgeous bundle” but they will over “some random mutt”.

As for care homes etc. I’m hoping for more for your kids than to do that job - I hope that care homes no longer exist and there’ll be a way to end your own life with dignity when you get to the point where someone would have to wipe your arse for you. Would also stop the endless nonsense of “you must tolerate my obnoxious sticky children because they’ll be wiping your bum one day” or whatever.

Fannehflaps · 27/04/2023 12:41

It really is as simple as not going to dog friendly places if you hate them THAT much.
