to be alarmed that more and more places are allowing dogs?

Just went to Wilko recently who had a sign up saying all dogs welcome. Went to a bistro and they allowed dogs too. Had lunch listening to small yappy dogs.

Since when did it become acceptable to allow dogs into shops and food places?

Same, except cats should be on a lead and muzzled at all times because of my allergies and one stood near me once and yowled which scared my shark.

When was someone killed by a domestic cat ? Haha to be fair my cat has better recall then most of the lockdown dogs. I do like dogs actually I met a beautiful dog at a rescue (visiting for work) who waited for me to invite him for a stroke. If I didn't work full time I would have taken him beautiful animal.

I would love more adult human places to be honest! No kids, no dogs. Bliss!

Me too. This is the dream!

The brass neck of this woman. A loose dog can find bad things to eat anywhere - parks, pavement, beach… it’s her responsibility to keep the dog safe.

You should’ve complained to staff - she was harassing you in front of your young child.

God we’ve all turned intolerant haven’t we? The person who’s toddler dropped the bar could have easily thought ‘well this person is terrified for their dog as any amount of chocolate can be poisonous’ and the person shouting could have thought ‘okay this was just a horrendous accident’. There’s too much blame in the world now post Covid. People don’t remember that fantastic phrase’you can’t get mad at an accident!’ And that cuts both ways here!!

Unlikely that their business folded because they accepted dogs - if it didn't work for them, surely they'd have changed their policy.

Sadly not, the owner was an amateur cook and dog lover who thought her home made cakes alone would be enough to keep the business going. She had little grasp of any of the skills required in the hospitality business.
It wouldn't have been so bad if the entitled dog owners hadn't let their dogs rush around freely, going under everybody's tables. I actually saw one snatch a cake from somebody's plate and that was it for me.

YMMV but I don’t think most dogs do love cafes, though. Dogs generally like relaxing in their own territory around their people, and being in the outdoors sniffing about and making new doggy friends. Half the dogs I see in cafes look stressed and on edge at all the commotion and immediately perk up and can’t wait to head towards the door the moment their owner starts making leaving motions. I don’t think those owners are thinking about their dog’s needs at all.

The way my dog pulls me into our local to greet the landlord tells me it's her fave place to be. She's given free leftovers there!

Up to those businesses 🤷‍♀️. I could say the same as @7Worfs last sentence about kids.

😂😂😂😂well said

2017, 2020, 2022.
This does not include cats eating their owners who had already died.

*Plus I was being sarcastic and foolishly thought that the it scared my shark bit would've given it away.

Has a huge domestic cat/rabbit ever jumped up on a human while they were out walking/running? It's unacceptable to allow huge dogs to jump up on people then some dog walkers will say they are just being friendly and complain if you tell them to leash them. I've never had a cow , cat , badger , fox, rabbit ever jump up on me while I've been walking it's always dogs!!!

But that doesn’t make the original statement any more true, no other animal is expected to be leashed or not put their paws on you! I have had a cat jump on me in public once actually, and had a deer run out of some woodland and almost right into me - no big deal.

So only animals that kill should be muzzled and on a lead? Does that include humans, men in particular?!

Mumsnet really hates dogs🙄
don't go.to.places that allow dogs if it's a problem for you.

That's the whole point though - becoming really difficult to do that!

So it was unpopular because she created & tolerated a chaotic atmosphere that few would visit more than once. Would it have been any better if there were small kids rushing around freely, crawling under tables and snatching food from plates? I'd say no. Would it have been better if dogs were allowed in but lay quietly under the tables and dozed? I'd say yes.

We leash pets as much for their own protection as anything else, because however well owners think they’ve trained their pets they’re still ultimately unpredictable animals driven by instinct. That’s why most people expect dogs to be leashed in situations where they can run into the road, lunge at another dog, jump on a human who might kick it away, or access food it probably shouldn’t be eating. I’m not sure who you’re expecting to have leashed the deer, but if its owner were taking it out for a coffee break, I’d like to think they’d have done so.

You miss my point, I’m not against putting dogs on a lead if you look back at my quotes here, I said it wasn’t ok for dogs to jump on people, my issue was with this statement, which is untrue:

A question to some dog owners why is it acceptable to unleash and allow them jump up on strangers. It's not acceptable from any other animal

The fact is, it IS acceptable from other animals.

Your description is perfect. And I don't like small kids rushing around freely any more than I like dogs doing it. If the dogs had stayed under the table and dozed I wouldn't have been so bothered.

Ah yes these mythical MN restaurants full of rampaging toddlers.

I used to work at a unit for severely autistic people we used to go for walks round the grounds. Members of the public thought it was appropriate to let their dogs off lead and bound up to severely autistic people and jump up. I told them to leash their dog as they have severe autism (very strong and could severely injure the dog if they became scared). They said I have autism too and he's friendly, I was actually 😒. Why would you walk around near a MH unit with a dog unleashed. It's putting the dog in danger some people are thick.

Because the dogs rights triumph the rights of human beings! How silly of you not to have realised that people come second to dogs and if a person cannot cope with dogs that's absolutely their fault!

(In jest of course. I feel for you and anyone else you cannot handle dogs especially ones that are not on leads but (some) dog owners will literally foam at the mouth defending the bad behaviour of their mutts instead of just putting them on a fucking lead)

Whichnumbers · 26/04/2023 17:26

It’s ill-thought because once it’s allowed it can get out of hand very easily.

yeah, two dogs growling/barking at each other in the pub - which one leaves when they are both with people eating their dinner? awkward

Who are you proposing should have put a leash on the wild deer who jumped out of the woodland at you? It’s neither acceptable nor unacceptable for a wild deer to jump at a human. It’s just the reality of living in a world where wild deer exist.

ScribblingPixie · 26/04/2023 17:28

@angela99999, I once went to a fantastic restaurant in Italy where, halfway through dinner, we were startled to see an elderly lurcher pop its head out from the tablecloth of the next door table with an expression that said "Anything for me?" Its owners gave an instruction and it disappeared again. It was the cutest thing ever, and still makes me smile. Anyway, the point is it just enhanced a lovely, sociable atmosphere. What you described is a horror show!

Strawberrydelight78 · 26/04/2023 17:29

A friend of mine had dog at her wedding a beautiful old English sheepdog. He was only there for the service though not the reception. She organised a dog sitter to look after him all day and she brought him to the service. That was her choice though.

be thankful you're not a farmer
https://www.kentonline.co.uk/canterbury/news/amp/almost-50-lambs-savaged-in-horrific-dog-attack-285920/
Almost 50 lambs have been killed in a single dog attack in Canterbury. Officers were called to farmland near Elbridge Hill at about 6am on Saturday after walkers saw the dogs attacking the farm animals.
A ewe and 23 lambs died in the attack, and it is understood a further 23 lambs were seriously injured.
A statement from White Mills Vetinary Clinic, which was called to treat the wounded animals, said “more deaths are likely in the coming days”.
After officers attended the field, they were able to catch one Akita-type dog, while the other had left the scene. [....]“We are determined to locate the dogs' owners and I urge anyone who has any information about how these dogs came to be in this area to get in contact with us.”
Anyone with information should call Kent Police on 01843 222289, quoting reference 22-0239, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

I wonder if the owner will be located, surely they knew what had happened?

We refuse to go anywhere that is dog friendly inside as we are very dog unfriendly as a rule !

My local cafe has just stopped dogs from being allowed inside , good for them say us

TheWernethWife · 26/04/2023 17:44

We holiday in Northumberland and there are loads of bars, restaurants and shops that are dog friendly, it seems to work up there.

TeenLifeMum · 26/04/2023 17:45

I live in the West Country and have for 20 years. Dogs have always been allowed in places -cafés, pubs, shops. Most shops in Clarks village have water bowls out for dogs. I guess the shift happened when it became unacceptable to leave a dog tied up outside a shop and increased risk of theft. My ddog cost £2k and is a sought after breed. I am considerate but it’s easy to be with 2 adults. Would be harder as a single adult.

When I was growing up people left dogs home for hours on end.
