To wish people would stop saying 'Jesus' all the bloody time

Sortyourlifeout · 25/04/2023 20:19

I can't read a thread on here without someone saying "Jesus Christ" or "Jesus wept" or similar.

I'm not a prude AT all and I have no issue with people swearing but as a Christian I find it highly offensive when people throw Jesus' name round in a negative way, without a thought for others' feelings and religions.

Most people wouldn't dream of using words that were offensive to other religions so why is it acceptable when it's 'Jesus?'.

This is a genuine message to ask people to PLEASE think before they post/speak.

Apologies for letting a J.C. slip on a goady post about Americans this evening.

Now I have some thing new to talk about with the priest at Confession 🤷‍♀️

BellePeppa · 25/04/2023 21:06

The Irish like a good blaspheme though don’t they, even the very religious.

CovetedAsFuck · 25/04/2023 21:06

Greensleeves · 25/04/2023 20:50

That's just what happens when a religion establishes a monopoly over a region's culture/art/music/language/politics, maintains it for hundreds of years through violence and indoctrination, and is then gradually outgrown and marginalised. The language pertaining to Christianity is, whether we like it or not (we don't), embedded in our vernacular. Of course people are going to use it. You have no more right to be offended by that than I do to still be angry that my ancestors were forced to practice a state religion on pain of torture and death.

Exactly this!

StressedToTheMaxxx · 25/04/2023 21:07

Putyourdamnshoeson · 25/04/2023 20:21

I don't believe in your sky fairy, or anyone else's. Culturally, I am predisposed to blaspheme using the lead religion in my country and the one to which my pare ta attempted to indoctrinate me. I will use whatever language I please, with no guilt. Ta.

I'm not religious in the slightest but I would never disrespect someone's personal beliefs like this. If you don't believe then that's fine but it's disgraceful to be so rude and disrespectful to someone else in the way that you have done.

HeadbandOverMyEyes · 25/04/2023 20:22

Why do you think "bloody" is a swear -word, out of interest?

It's basically medieval: "I swear on the blood of christ" French swearing is also very medieval & catholic: e.g: "tabernacle!" Mentioning these holy things was a big risk because God would strike you down for saying his name etc. out loud.
All this I learned at Catholic school and am now a "born again atheist" Wink

CheersForThatEh · 25/04/2023 21:07

Sortyourlifeout · 25/04/2023 20:36

I'm not policing anyone's language. I'm asking if people could think about others feelings (much as they would with every other part of life).

I dont think many people would be so dismissive in real life of someone they are fond of. All these people saying that they will say whatever to whoever...yeah, I doubt they would say it to their nan or a close friends parents if they knew it upset them. Or their BIL/SIL if their sibling had said it upsets them. Or their employer

People are all Billy Big Bollocks on the internet but would probably temper it if they knew it upset people that were important to them.

readbooksdrinktea · 25/04/2023 21:08

I mean, people who profess to be Christians do things that are a lot worse under the cover and protection of their religion. I'll use whatever language I like.

Luredbyapomegranate · 25/04/2023 21:08

Titsywoo · 25/04/2023 20:26

I like "Christ on a bike!"

Me too!

I do a fair amount of Jesusing and Christing which now I think about it is probably down to an RC upbringing.

I am sorry it bothers you OP and I wouldn’t say in a church or a Christian mingle coffee morning.. but on MN or in the rest of my life I think I have as much of a right to express myself as you have a right to moan about it, so 🤷‍♀️

BellePeppa · 25/04/2023 21:06

There's no blasphemy any more in Ireland. We had a referendum so can say whatever the fuck we want to now.

Liveandsmile · 25/04/2023 21:02

You’ll find people really rude on here about Christianity, they wouldn’t be about any other religion. Strange when we are a Christian country .. and no it’s not about the church or any of that stuff. The religion is the bible, God, Jesus. Not about those that had any role in corruption in the church or any of those morally bankrupt that do heinous acts under the cover of Christianity.

People saying they dont believe in the 'sky fairy' etc aren't somehow saying they dont believe in just the Christian god, but all Gods.

And Ive seen people be incredibly rude to muslims on this website, including asking muslim women to leave a thread about the hijab because they didnt like what they were saying.

As for saying we are a Christian country, mumsnet is on the internet which is global so unless you think every contry is Christian then which country do you mean?

Jesus exists in Islam, Christians in arabic countries call God Allah, its all part of the same thing.

MinervaSaidThar · 25/04/2023 21:08

monsteramunch · 25/04/2023 21:01

This! OP you're not helping with the perception that religion often involves large dollops of hypocrisy I'm afraid 😬

You are someone who does believe and you use the phrase 'oh my god' thoughtlessly sometimes, by your own admission.

Yet you've started a thread criticising people who don't even believe for using a phrase about a figure from your religion.

The hypocrisy is real with this one I'm afraid!

Where has OP said ‘oh my God’ on this thread? Have I missed it because I can’t see it.

IlIlI · 25/04/2023 21:09

Other religions believe in Jesus too. And Allah is just Arabic for God, even Christians there say Allah.
I understand you're offended, but maybe the reason they say it is because, as you say, it's historically a Christian country and because they speak English not Arabic.

MinervaSaidThar · 25/04/2023 21:09

Emigratingimmigrant · 25/04/2023 20:46

Imagine Christian bread Jane in leafy suburbs in Essex with "juicy" on trackies exclaiming "yah Allah"😂. So it's fair to Jesus

Actually white women are one of the biggest groups that convert to Islam.

Gtsr443 · 25/04/2023 21:09

Isn't Jesus actually Yeshua which translates as Joshua?

Havagooday · 25/04/2023 21:10

This thread has bought out all the people who think they're 'clever' and 'witty'
I hope you don't raise your children like this. Being disrespectful is not nice.

SpidersAreShitheads · 25/04/2023 21:10

OP, if I knew you I'd try not to blaspheme around you in real life because you find it offensive.

I swear regularly and by the same token, I wind in my potty mouth around people who I know that dislike swearing.

That's just being considerate though, as I would do with anyone.

However, you don't have the right to compel my speech to match your personal beliefs.

I have the right to say "Jesus", to laugh at jokes about Easter, and to say other things that you might not like. You have the right to dislike them and be offended.

That's how free speech works. And I'm delighted to be in a country where we have freedom of speech, even if I don't always agree with everything other people say.

CoalCraft · 25/04/2023 21:11

Lol. My mum told me off for saying "Jesus Christ!" as an exclamation of surprise once, and I was so taken aback by just how cross she was that, genuinely without thinking about it, I replied "Jesus Christ, mum, calm down!"

Sorry OP but YABU. Jesus of Nazareth died ~2,000 years ago and is absolutely none the wiser if I use his name as a swear word.

SquidwardBound · 25/04/2023 21:11

Sortyourlifeout · 25/04/2023 20:39

I suspect you are right. But if it's got people thinking about what is offensive to people then I'm not sorry that I started this thread.

I've been to Ireland. And I have some Irish Catholic friends who blaspheme alot. I find it very interesting given what we are taught in the Bible 🤪

You do realise that your preferred way to practise CoE Christianity is not superior to how many Irish people get on with being Catholic?

Or is it just that you want everyone to consider your feelings and it’s fine for you to imply that Irish people aren’t good Christians (like you)?

DustyLee123 · 25/04/2023 21:11

I think there are a few people with the name Jesus these days, it’s not owned by anyone.

MinervaSaidThar · 25/04/2023 21:11

Gtsr443 · 25/04/2023 21:09

Isn't Jesus actually Yeshua which translates as Joshua?

’[Jesus’] roots lie in the name Yeshua/Y'shua, it is etymologically related to another biblical name, Joshua.’

Fairislefandango · 25/04/2023 21:12

You’ll find people really rude on here about Christianity, they wouldn’t be about any other religion. Strange when we are a Christian country.

Confused It's not strange at all. That's precisely why they do it. If you're anti organised religion, it's only natural that your main target will be the dominant religion in your country, because that will be the one that's had most impact on your life, culture and upbringing. Why would you pick on a religion that hasn't?

Putyourdamnshoeson · 25/04/2023 21:13

I'm equally rude about all religions, if that helps

Loria · 25/04/2023 21:14

Would you prefer it if we typed it in a Spanish accent?

Like this : Jesus

CovetedAsFuck · 25/04/2023 21:14

Wildest claims on this thread: (1) that 'Oh my God' wasn't really a popular expression until Friends came out in the 1990s and (2) that people saying 'Jeez!' is just a coincidence and has nothing to do with Jesus

Mycathatesmecuddling · 25/04/2023 21:15

MinervaSaidThar · 25/04/2023 21:08

Where has OP said ‘oh my God’ on this thread? Have I missed it because I can’t see it.

A quick advanced search shows that@Sortyourlifeout is quite happy to say For Gods sake on another thread whilst criticising people on this thread so the hypocrisy is strong in this one
