To wish people would stop saying 'Jesus' all the bloody time

Sortyourlifeout · 25/04/2023 20:19

I can't read a thread on here without someone saying "Jesus Christ" or "Jesus wept" or similar.

I'm not a prude AT all and I have no issue with people swearing but as a Christian I find it highly offensive when people throw Jesus' name round in a negative way, without a thought for others' feelings and religions.

Most people wouldn't dream of using words that were offensive to other religions so why is it acceptable when it's 'Jesus?'.

This is a genuine message to ask people to PLEASE think before they post/speak.

This thread has bought out all the people who think they're 'clever' and 'witty'

Really? It's just people disagreeing fairly articulately with a particular point. That's a pretty normal thing to do. It doesn't mean someone thinks they are especially clever or witty.

Aaah, I love this comment! What did you think it was short for? 😅

Yes, it's short for Jesus.

Honestly I thought it was just an old fashioned nonsense word like gee, shucks and golly😂

You learn something new every day!

Agree Christianity isn't protected in the way other religions often are, especially Islam.

Especially on MN.

I think there are a few people with the name Jesus these days, it’s not owned by anyone.

There's a top footballer who's called Gabriel Jesus. He's Brazilian but played in England for quite some time.

In football, it's usual to refer to footballers solely by their surnames.

Gabriel Jesus is an attacking player who regularly scored goals. I found this very amusing because I am clearly still a 5 yr old child.

My immature self never failed to chuckle every time I saw the name "Jesus" on the football scoresheet or heard the commentary team shout "And Jesus has scored!"

I think it's a more common name elsewhere but it's still relatively unusual to hear it in the UK so it did make me laugh. Every time 😅

@MinervaSaidThar

Where has OP said ‘oh my God’ on this thread? Have I missed it because I can’t see it

Someone mentioned people using the phrase 'oh my god' to OP and she directly replied:

I'm guilty of that sometimes when I'm actually 'speaking' and it just pops out. I feel bad when I say it though.

NIparty · 25/04/2023 21:18

Sortyourlifeout · 25/04/2023 20:25

But people don't. Thats my point. It wouldn't be accepted. And rightly so.

I say Jesus because I was raised Christian, went to a Chriatian school and a Christian church.... Allah or Mohammad aren't naturally in my vocabulary. Thats the point. Its people raised Christian that are saying it, so have come from that religion.

Gee comes from Jesus and Golly is a euphamism for God too I believe

MessagesKeepGettingClearer · 25/04/2023 21:18

I can see why you've asked, and it doesn't hurt people to be considerate of other people's feelings.

But I also think you need to appreciate that no one who says this, means 'Jesus'. I mean, only non-christians, who don't believe Jesus is god, would say that. So they aren't talking about Jesus as you think of him. They're using an common expression.

That doesn't mean you have to like it or that people shouldn't be more thoughtful. But I think you're being a tad unreasonable expecting people to never say Jesus again.

Theunamedcat · 25/04/2023 21:18

We say dear lord a lot over here I was told it was blasphemy I said it was a request for intervention its not my fault he is an absent farther

whumpthereitis · 25/04/2023 20:24

This old trope. No one is stopping you from saying ‘Mohammad’ or ‘oh my Allah’, so go for it if you’d like.

Btw- the same thing is not offensive in Islam. You can use “Mohammad” or “my Allah” and it is totally ok as opposed to the equivalent use in Christianity which is seen as offensive.

Silentbarking · 25/04/2023 21:18

CovetedAsFuck · 25/04/2023 21:14

Wildest claims on this thread: (1) that 'Oh my God' wasn't really a popular expression until Friends came out in the 1990s and (2) that people saying 'Jeez!' is just a coincidence and has nothing to do with Jesus

I suggested it was popularised by Friends. Someone came along and put me right on that and I put my hands up. Are you still frothing at the mouth oh thread detective.

Sortyourlifeout · 25/04/2023 20:27

I'm CofE too. And yes, I've noticed that alot of my Catholic pals throw Jesus' name around too. Which I don't understand either!

You might be onto something there, OP.

I'm very lapsed Catholic holy (think Vatican style smoke signals from my chimney at least three times a week) and I have been known to say 'Jesus Christ on a fucking pogo stick' on occasion.

Am sure this behaviour will land me a lengthy turn in purgatory but it just trills off the tongue so, doesn't it?

Fairislefandango · 25/04/2023 21:20

Where has OP said ‘oh my God’ on this thread? Have I missed it because I can’t see it.

In her second post on the thread she admits that she says 'Oh my god'. But because she's sorry about it and doesn't type it, only says it, apparently that isn't as bad, so she still gets to criticise other people for doing it.

monsteramunch · 25/04/2023 21:20

A quick advanced search shows that Sortyourlifeout is quite happy to say For Gods sake on another thread whilst criticising people on this thread so the hypocrisy is strong in this one

Oh dear OP.

Sounds like your own use of what you deem to be blasphemous language is something you should really work hard on before you judge others!

If you find it hard not to use what you consider blasphemous language when you are religious, it's a bit of a big ask to expect atheists not to use it, don't you think?

Xenia · 25/04/2023 21:20

I am Christian and don't mind as long as we can be just as abusive about all other faiths.

Hahahaha! Aaah honestly, @Moneymismatch this really did make me laugh - meant in the nicest possible way of course 😊 - mainly because this is usually the kind of thing that I do!! There was a great thread a while back about daft things that people had never realised and it was full of stuff like this.

It's basically medieval: "I swear on the blood of christ" French swearing is also very medieval & catholic: e.g: "tabernacle!" Mentioning these holy things was a big risk because God would strike you down for saying his name etc. out loud.
All this I learned at Catholic school and am now a "born again atheist" Wink

Thing is, it seems likely that it's not technically from a religious reference, originally, but the true origin isn't actually very important in this context.

I was trying to draw out from OP what she thought the origin was, because for a really long time, a fuck of a lot of English-speaking Christians have been told it's some kind of religious reference or other, making it as upsetting/offensive/taboo/whatever to them as any other religious reference. It lent the word a lot more power (and staying-power) as a swear word than it would've had if it had stayed an entirely non-religious epithet.

Somehow OP seems to have managed to entirely sidestep this specific aspect of English-speaking Christian culture, but if she had previously come across and believed a religious definition of "bloody", it would've been a bit rich to use it in a post complaining about language that upsets some Christians for religious reasons.

ElleMD80 · 25/04/2023 21:22

I am actually an RE teacher (in my country you choose three subjects, RE is one of my three) and honestly, not a hill to die on. Or a cross to crucify on. The days where blaspheming was a punishable offense are far(ish) behind us and thank God, Jesus and a ton of saints for that. It means Christianity - or at least Catholicism - has advanced (and it is still stuck in the stone age on a fckton of stuff). Just imagine people are saying Jesus ‘Mexican-style’ and picture a little man selling paletas.

TemporaryNaming · 25/04/2023 21:23

I use it instead of swearing, but if I thought I would offended someone I wouldn't. I will try to be more mindful in future, it is a bad habit & I don't say it when collecting DD from her club held in a church hall so I know I can stop myself. I think it's nice to be nice so will absolutely try to be more mindful in future.

Easterfunbun · 25/04/2023 21:23

anotherside · 25/04/2023 21:24

I think the casual usenof Jesus as a cursing expression and the previous Christian indoctrination/cultural landscape (religious assemblies etc) that was forced on basically every child until around the early 90s sort of go hand in hand. It’s cultural. And of course it’s not a conscious choice which bad word to say.
