To wish people would stop saying 'Jesus' all the bloody time

I can't read a thread on here without someone saying "Jesus Christ" or "Jesus wept" or similar.

I'm not a prude AT all and I have no issue with people swearing but as a Christian I find it highly offensive when people throw Jesus' name round in a negative way, without a thought for others' feelings and religions.

Most people wouldn't dream of using words that were offensive to other religions so why is it acceptable when it's 'Jesus?'.

This is a genuine message to ask people to PLEASE think before they post/speak.

I would be kind of holy (a cherry picking catholic if you will- go to mass when I can, pray to people I know in heaven or when times are tough etc, love the community of church but not the Catholic Church itself) and I always hated people saying’god, or Jesus’ but now I do it myself and actually hate more that cursing is seen as okay, as in all the fs etc. I think we’ve definitely lost something there and really hate hearing kids curse because I think eg f you is the same as telling someone to shut up or go away used to be in my time (I’m 43), it’s not thinking of how they’d feel and making them feel bad (how I explain it to my kids who do, unfortunately curse)

Yeah I agree, I'm not Christian but I have friends and family who are, and I can see it hurts their feelings when they hear it even though they stay quiet. Why choose a word that means nothing to you as a swear word but will actively hurt someone else's feelings? There are plenty of other words to choose.

Why on earth does it hurt their feelings? Worshipping and idolising Jesus or god is no different to me than idolising a pop star. Should someone’s feelings be hurt if someone thinks their pop star idol is crap? They can have their hurt feelings if they want but that’s their choice!

SerendipityJane · 26/04/2023 16:39

that’s their choice

And that - as Hamlet would have said - is the rub, Religion is a choice. And nothing anyone can say, show or do will ever convince me otherwise. And - especially on MN - peoples life choices get questioned and challenged all the time.

@MysteriesOfTheOrganism

Or maybe MN could start a new trend? Perhaps I'll start saying "Penis beaker" or "Naice ham!" Anyone care to join me

I quite often mutter "Penis fucking beaker" when reading some of the posts on here, but it's more an expression of regret than surprise.

This has restored my faith in humanity 😂

Wow, I honestly thought it was only me who felt this way. It makes me wince too. My husband is not a Christian and he does this. And my mum claims to be but she's a bit lukewarm and her language is peppered with OMG, OG etc. It just makes the atmosphere negative and horrible. I'd rather say sht and fuck frankly. (Sorry if that offends anyone!)The trouble is, if people don't believe, they aren't going to get it/understand why you feel offended by it, so I think the best thing to do is just express yourself in a way that you feel is appropriate and leave them to get on with it. I'm not saying don't share your faith with them if it feels right, but honestly, pulling someone up on this...it's not going to change them, they will just get arsey and start mocking you. You might as well be speaking a completely different language (all this is in the bible btw). But thanks for the solidarity of feeling - much appreciated OP. 💐

The thing is just because someone is offended it doesn’t mean everyone else should accommodate them so they don’t get offended does it? Religion offends me and stupid stuff religious people say offends me no end - nonsense guff like God’s Plan when something crap happens to you. And the atrocious, offensive, thick as shit platitude of Everything Happens for a Reason that religious people love to trot out. They offend me big time!!

It's taken a few, and looped back round via breathtaking hypocracy a couple of times now 😂

…hypocrisy

Fairislefandango · 26/04/2023 17:05

No, I mean we should be able to criticise all, including Atheists.

Well yes. But you can't criticise them for their religious beliefs, because they don't have any, in spite of what some people may claim.

OMG12 · 26/04/2023 17:08

MinervaSaidThar · 26/04/2023 15:04

Including atheists.

Yep happy to criticise anyone who doesn’t think things through, that would inc many atheists esp of the “sky Daddy” kind

I can think of bigger things to get my knickers in a twist over 🤷‍♀️

My best friend is a gay man with a penchant for men of the cloth.
He's had more priests that he's met on Grindr than I've had hot dinners.

That wouldn't surprise me at all.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/religion/2021/07/21/catholic-official-grindr-reaction/

I think there was quite a big recent sting.

The issue is using free church accomodatii. and being a fraud, if you don't want to be a priest crack on. It's breaking the contract.

Agapornis · 26/04/2023 17:31

OP, how would you like us to swear instead? Some Dutch speakers use diseases. Would you prefer that? E.g.
Cancer! Tuberculosis! (Similar to jesus/oh my god)
Get cholera/covid/cancer/leprosy/tb/pleurisy/plague (fuck off)
Cancer/smallpox sufferer, dirty typhoid dog, pus head (name calling)

Amusingly the Netherlands also has a very Christian, wildly unsuccessful, League Against Swearing...

Swearing is culturally really interesting! You can generally divide it into religion, poo/pee, sex/genitals, animals, family members - or a combination thereof. E.g.
The catholic south of europe is all about whores (putain/puta);
Italians are a bit anal/genital;
Ireland's very jesus-y.

I dunno. That Dawkins fellow can get on my tits a bit.

But that's only because Dawkins is a well known personality who has made his thoughts and feelings on a range of subjects known.

Atheism itself is simply a position someone holds. It is the null hypothesis to "there is a god" and tells you nothing about a person's beliefs or morals or even spirituality.

Following a religion, on the other hand, is a declaration of faith and immediately reveals some characteristics of the person. And, depending on the religion they follow, can hint at several more.

CurlewKate · 26/04/2023 18:18

I don't mind if you call me an idiot. Feel free. But atheism is not idiotic because it is a way of thinking that fits into scientific principles using the currently available evidence. More evidence may emerge tomorrow that makes it idiotic, but not at the moment.

Unfortunately holding that position of a null hypothesis doesn’t seem to preclude some Atheists from being as obnoxious as possible, as you can see on this thread. They are not benign observers. And that’s fine, people should be able to say what they want, but atheists trying to claim the moral high ground is laughable.

Moonmelodies · 26/04/2023 18:27

Maybe if Christians and Muslims stop saying bad stuff about Satan (pbuh) then I will go easy on Jesus and Mohammed.

SpeedSnap · 26/04/2023 18:30

I have yet to meet someone who isn't following some sort of religion, they may very well be in denial about it though.

The most daft religion going about at present is the DEI one that people join and do as their priestly class the HR department tells them to do right fown to changing their creed 'sustainability' 'TWAW' 'inclusion' 'diversity' in return for money and status.

SpeedSnap · 26/04/2023 18:31

right down to chanting their creed

SpeedSnap · 26/04/2023 18:35

I think that there is a split in the intersectionality religion. Don Lemmon was only beaten on the top trumps by a TW, a load of white middle class woke women ousted him in the USA from CNN.

I’m not following any religion 🤷‍♀️

faffadoodledo · 26/04/2023 18:43

Haven't rttt but Bloody was considered blasphemous til quite recently. My mum (who wasn't even religious) believed it was. And she was born in 1940.

Why would you know better than they do whether they are following some sort of religion? I'm certainly not following any sort of religion. Religion doesn't mean 'strongly-held set of opinions about a particular topic'. Is that what you meant by following a religion but being in denial about it?

SpeedSnap · 26/04/2023 18:51

So morals and ethics and behaviour, you seriously are sahinb they aren't consistant, you make them up wvery day wvery time it's different? You may be in a little cult all of your own.

Your morals and ethics at work and going about your business in life, they come from your employers or UK law, I assume you follow them? UK, international law you follow?
