To wish people would stop saying 'Jesus' all the bloody time

Sortyourlifeout · 25/04/2023 20:19

I can't read a thread on here without someone saying "Jesus Christ" or "Jesus wept" or similar.

I'm not a prude AT all and I have no issue with people swearing but as a Christian I find it highly offensive when people throw Jesus' name round in a negative way, without a thought for others' feelings and religions.

Most people wouldn't dream of using words that were offensive to other religions so why is it acceptable when it's 'Jesus?'.

This is a genuine message to ask people to PLEASE think before they post/speak.

Yep, all pretty offensive to women. Any Christians want to explain why women shouldn’t be offended by this bullshit, or why we should respect a religion that has no respect for us?

Christianity (and the other Abrahamic religions) are extraordinarily misogynistic.

most spirituality not linked to organised religion values men and women equally

Bizarre, isn't it!

Didn't think I would miss @SpeedSnap and yet here we are!

Cam22 · 26/04/2023 14:06

Seems the perps wouldn’t be vile about Muslims or Jews. But it’s fine to disrespect Christianity.

Meh, they all miss spirituality by equal measures, happy to criticise all equally tbh

@OMG12
'Being evangelical perpetuates that aggression, it is thinking you have the right to try and infiltrate a person with your personal beliefs and threaten eternal damnation if they don’t join your tribe.'
I'm really sorry if that's your experience, @OMG12 . Just totting up how many churches I've attended regularly since becoming a Christian (moved houses, country and counties a bit)...Been to at least 10 and visited many more when looking for churches to settle in or on holiday. Some C of E, Baptist, Evangelical. Never come across this. We've always looked for churches where jesus us upheld as the model to follow, where bible teaching is central and kindness and love is important. Sometimes it takes time to find a church like that. Most of the world seems to be atheist and agnostic so those attitudes are all around us - infiltrating us, if you like. 🤔No one ever tried to infiltrate me. I made my own decision.

nopuppiesallowed · 26/04/2023 14:32

I'm bowing out of this thread now - because it's not the right forum for in depth discussion on anything. However, if anyone is interested, it would be worth reading 'Does God Believe in Atheists?' by John Blanchard or 'Who Moved the Stone' by Lee Strobel, the latter a book by a journalist looking to destroy his wife's faith.

How do atheists miss spirituality in an equal measure to a religious person?

No, I mean we should be able to criticise all, including Atheists.

Would it be though? Worth it, that is. Lee Strobel, the man who found a hook to get evangelicals, who love a good conversion story, to part with millions.

“His fan base is led to believe he was a diehard atheist who was converted by these interviews. In reality, he was a lapsed Lutheran who became a pastor at a mega-church. It wasn’t until over a decade later—and after writing three books in defense of evangelical Christianity—he had the idea to select a line-up of Evangelical academics who support his view and lob softball questions at them, all under the guise of a “tough skeptic.”
He is careful about what he claims explicitly, but the popularity of his franchise rests on this pivot, the idea of a hard-headed skeptic who set out to prove Christianity wrong but was just blown away by the evidence and had to surrender to Christ. Strobel doesn’t set the record straight. Instead, he has milked it to the tune of millions of dollars, writing book after book with the same formula: He positions himself as the skeptic, and then lo and behold, the evidence for the resurrection or against evolution (or whatever new evangelical theme-of-the week he’s advocating) is just overwhelming.”

I don't agree that people should follow all or none of the Bible. I believe that religion is personal. People can follow the teachings of Jesus while ignoring those bits that don't hold water for them. E.g. I'm not going to kill anyone who mentions conversion in my presence.

It is also entirely possible to follow the teachings of Jesus without believing in them or the bible anyway. By al means, claim you are being nice to people because an old book tells you to, rather than because it makes you feel good. But it doesn't really sell your critical thinking to me.

People who burned witches actually used their bibles to literally fan the flames. There were artisans who peddled bible holders that allowed you to fan your bible to the middle and hold it at arms length so as to ensure the flames took hold quickly.

OK, I may have made that last bit up. Which seemed appropriate in this thread.

I know you can follow Jesus's teachings without believing in God or the Bible...

Honestly I'm not really sure what you're trying to say. I'm not trying to sell my critical thinking to you. I was just commenting on blasphemy.

Actually I'm not. I've managed to keep track of a conversation that you are in that you can't even keep track of.

You make statements that make no sense, accuse posters of things they havent done, twist the meaning of posts and have called atheists idiots, miliant and pathetic whilst somehow maintaining that atheists cannot have an opinion about religious people.

You clearly made a mistake with another poster but argued adamantly that three posters were wrong and you were right despite screenshots proving you wrong.

So not I'm not easily confused. I wont be engaging with you again because you are either deliberately derailing the thread or you really dont follow your own train of thought.

What mistake did I make?

Someone said all religious people are idiots. I said as long as we agree atheists are idiots too.

Someone else said people who say ‘Oh my days’ instead of ‘oh my God’ are pathetic. I said it’s pathetic to insult someone who died thousand of years ago.

Someone else said all religious people are unhinged. I said atheists are militant.

Do you see a pattern there? Atheists doing ALL the attacking, and then when I respond, atheists getting all butt hurt.

You won’t be responding because you don’t have a leg to stand on. Your hypocrisy is breathtaking!
