To wish people would stop saying 'Jesus' all the bloody time

I can't read a thread on here without someone saying "Jesus Christ" or "Jesus wept" or similar.

I'm not a prude AT all and I have no issue with people swearing but as a Christian I find it highly offensive when people throw Jesus' name round in a negative way, without a thought for others' feelings and religions.

Most people wouldn't dream of using words that were offensive to other religions so why is it acceptable when it's 'Jesus?'.

This is a genuine message to ask people to PLEASE think before they post/speak.

You were also born, fed, watered, clothed, schooled without your consent, but presumably you’re ok with that.

And I bet you loved believing in Santa and getting all the presents.

This HAS to be a wind-up. Jesus fucking Christ, are you really trying to compare the actions of a parent to keep their child alive with an entirely optional religious ceremony?

romdowa · 26/04/2023 09:02

As a Catholic myself , my go to blasphemous phrase has to be "christ on a bike" I don't find it the least bit offensive, in fact i find it quite humorous

Interesting to see the sheer rudeness of some of the people defending their right to be ignorant and offensive towards Christians!
They clearly lack the benefit of Christ’s wisdom and humility, and need to learn to “Love thy neighbour”.

If you were my neighbour, I’d move.

I find the whole concept of blasphemy offensive. That people would try to control how others talk about their non existent deity is so breathtakingly arrogant and disturbing. You cannot expect people to become an unwilling participant in your nonsensical belief system, to help prop up your delusions, often at their expense, just because it makes you feel better. Though that applies to a few issues besides religion these days.

Yes, this.

Surely if bikes had been invented he'd have ridden one. Grin

Right?
I'm guilty of that sometimes when I'm actually 'speaking' and it just pops out. I feel bad when I say it though.

But to actually type it. Thought (or lack of) has gone into that.

Pot kettle black.

You are a Christian and use it in your speech. And then take it upon yourself to chatise others for doing the same in their writing even though it means not much to most? You are effectively telling them they need to me more considerate to your faith than you can manage to be.

How very institutional religion of you.

I think he would have and he'd have throughly enjoyed it as well.

Emmmie · 26/04/2023 09:20

Xenia but it isn't other faiths who are using/envoking Jesus in various sentences - it is only Christians or possibly atheists. But yea, always good to blame these things on other religions.

News flash - Christians do say Ya Allah/Allah all the time in countries where Allah means God and they have every right to. No one faith owns the world God.

Emmmie · 26/04/2023 09:22

The word* God , not world.

"noone owns the world God" could work as a response to this thread too!

My catholic friend is always being blasphemous, she is worse than anyone else I know!

I don’t think people even think about it, I’m definitely guilty of it, growing up the phrases were all said by all the adults around me.

Neither myself or my DH are religious but we have made sure our kids say oh my gosh, not god, and cheese and rice etc as we do live in a very Christian part of the country, their friends to tease them for it though!

growing up the phrases were all said by all the adults around me.

Same here and the adults around me were Christians. The majority of my family and friends are Christian and said these phrases constantly. It was all right to them as long as a cuss word wasn’t added with it.

I’m not religious but I do think such phrases in my head because that’s what I’ve grown up with and still hear used all the time.

Oh no! Just posted this in all innocence because it is from a show i watched as a kid. I looked it up and realise that it is actually quite racist. I have asked MN to take it down and apologise for any offence that was caused to anyone.

Silentbarking · 25/04/2023 20:20

Yes and ‘Oh my God’.

Hilarious that we got that from the USA where Christian observance is so much higher than here, too.

I hate it, and I'm an Atheist.

wyntersuhn · 26/04/2023 09:35

ChiChaNaYubi · 25/04/2023 20:32

Jesus fucking H Christ is my fave.

Yeah, that comes out around here, usually when I'm driving.

Tulipsemerging · 26/04/2023 09:37

It's safer than saying Allah on a bike, fucking Allah etc. Do Christians really take it personally like some other faiths do? I mean it's no different than saying fairies in the sky on a bike or fucking fairies. Not everyone has joined in the belief written by men in books long ago.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/04/2023 09:40

I get annoyed with myself when I use ingrained religious epithets such as oh my god or bloody hell, as I believe in neither. Hopefully they'll die out as the population becomes less religious. I wish people wouldn't say 'thank god' for all the many things that are down to luck or human effort. People saying 'thank god' for not being harmed by an incident which did harm others is crass in the extreme.

Conkersinautumn · 26/04/2023 09:40

Oh my god is less offensive surely as its not naming names or implying any kind of precious hierarchy;-) at least 'my' is emphasising the highly personal subjective nature of the ideas of God's and general human urge to reduce nature to relatable simple concepts.

Good point - Christian's don't have a monopoly on the word god. I could be referring to my god Odin for all you know.

Even Jesus exists across religions.

updin · 26/04/2023 09:43

Organised religion is far more offensive, to women especially, can't say I particularly care about offending someone on the basis of religion tbh.

It's a bit patriarchal Grin
Maybe I should try to change to 'oh my goddess' as an alternative epithetical entity I don't believe in, as presumably Christians won't mind that at all?

True. Hey my child/parent/sibling survived because god was watching over them. Forgetting the fact that others died and whoops god didn't bother looking after them. Yet the same people get offended with the use of christ on a bike or similar. Umm

SerendipityJane · 26/04/2023 09:48

Heck is where people who don't believe in gosh go to.

MrsSkylerWhite · 26/04/2023 09:48

I find religion in general offensive but have to put up with it everywhere. I’ll say what I like, thank you.
