To wish people would stop saying 'Jesus' all the bloody time

I can't read a thread on here without someone saying "Jesus Christ" or "Jesus wept" or similar.

I'm not a prude AT all and I have no issue with people swearing but as a Christian I find it highly offensive when people throw Jesus' name round in a negative way, without a thought for others' feelings and religions.

Most people wouldn't dream of using words that were offensive to other religions so why is it acceptable when it's 'Jesus?'.

This is a genuine message to ask people to PLEASE think before they post/speak.

You shouldn't have imposed your religion on people over last few thousand years, crusading, burning people at stakes, Spanish inquisition etc, then people might not use it.

People don't use other religions words as it isn't culturally ingrained as much.

BitchFaceResting · 26/04/2023 07:44

and don't forget 'Jehova, Jehova, Jehova'....' (thank you Monty Python)

Gtsr443 · 26/04/2023 07:50

Without my consent I was baptised as a child. I spent my entire childhood in schools which crammed saying grace, morning prayers and hymns and dreary bloody sermons down my throat on a daily basis.
Despite all that indoctrination I have never believed in any of it.
By the time i was 16 I'd already had enough of religious adherents telling me what to do, think and say.
You will not police my words or thoughts.
If you find it upsetting to hear "blasphemy" I really don't care.

I'm not religious in the slightest but I would never disrespect someone's personal beliefs like this. If you don't believe then that's fine but it's disgraceful to be so rude and disrespectful to someone else in the way that you have done.

No it’s not.

BellePeppa · 26/04/2023 08:05

What about Gordon Bennett, should all GB’s be offended when their name is taken in vain. Or what about all the Pete’s of the world? Jesus is just a name. Personally my favourite Jesus is Jesus Enrique Rosas so when I I say Jesus etc I’m taking Senor Rosas’ name in vain. I don’t think he’ll mind.

Bigpinktrain · 26/04/2023 08:07

I say fucking hell and Christ a lot, soz!

That could have been me (lapsed Catholic)! I don’t see blasphemy as a thing because I don’t believe in the thing that causes blasphemy (god).

Reality25 · 26/04/2023 08:08

YANBU but there are far too many selfish and short-sighted people in this country to stop it happening.

DogInATent · 26/04/2023 08:16

Or maybe you don’t know that “bloody” is a contraction of “by our lady” referring to Mary, mother of God, and so just as blasphemous as “Jesus”?
That's one popular theory, but the origins of the term 'bloody' as an expletive will never truly be known. It's quite likely there's more than one origin and they've converged.

You were also born, fed, watered, clothed, schooled without your consent, but presumably you’re ok with that.

And I bet you loved believing in Santa and getting all the presents.

Babdoc · 26/04/2023 08:19

Interesting to see the sheer rudeness of some of the people defending their right to be ignorant and offensive towards Christians!
They clearly lack the benefit of Christ’s wisdom and humility, and need to learn to “Love thy neighbour”.

Absolutely, and if there'd have been more presents at church it might I might have stuck at it a bit longer.

Interesting to see so many people having a tantrum because others don't care about offending their non existent deity of choice.

Who told you you had a right to go through life not be offended?

I find religion offensive, so please stop and THINK before you post - reasonable?

IDontWantToBeAPie · 26/04/2023 08:25

Sorry but I was raised in your faith and do not believe in it anymore. I won't moderate my language bc you think it's a sin when I don't and it's part of my cultural lexicon.

CheckingOutandIn · 26/04/2023 08:28

I find the whole concept of blasphemy offensive. That people would try to control how others talk about their non existent deity is so breathtakingly arrogant and disturbing. You cannot expect people to become an unwilling participant in your nonsensical belief system, to help prop up your delusions, often at their expense, just because it makes you feel better. Though that applies to a few issues besides religion these days.

Noorandapples · 26/04/2023 08:29

Yeah I agree, I'm not Christian but I have friends and family who are, and I can see it hurts their feelings when they hear it even though they stay quiet. Why choose a word that means nothing to you as a swear word but will actively hurt someone else's feelings? There are plenty of other words to choose.

Exactly and I view TRAs as a religious cult too. The new blasphemy is stating that people don't and can't change sex. Another magical concept relying on the existence of a soul. I'm against compelled speech, wherever it is from.

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 26/04/2023 08:32

I find

OP I think you need to work on being less offended, it can't be good for you. Maybe someone at your Sunday club can help?

Good luck trying to conflate child neglect with mass indoctrination of minors by organised religion.
Yup I believed in Santa until I was 6. And then I grew up and stopped believing in things that weren't real. And I knew not to trust adults because they make shit up.

SerendipityJane · 26/04/2023 08:34

Personally, given we are dealing with a translation of a translation of a translation of an oral tradition from a culture and race long since disseminated I have always felt "Take the Lords name in vain" was an injunction against using "God" as an excuse to push mortal designs. There are lots of things in Christianity which we are told "God" doesn't like (or insists on) which when you start digging, find yourself asking "Do they ?".

The odd lack of female priests, for example.

I'm not saying that religion is a load of old poppycock of course. It's just if you did come up with a load of old poppycock to try and corral the crows, it would probably end up looking like religion over thousands of years. I.e. the poppycock came first.

Do you think they care about how misogynistic their religion is and if that offends women? I doubt it.

I agree entirely.

Lwrenagain · 26/04/2023 08:44

I've had a mooch through the comments and i know I use these words alot.
Being atheist it's never really crossed my mind that it would upset someone, but since it does I'll make the effort to change my wording up a bit.
I understand people sick of being told what they can/can't say but I personally will try to not say things that upset people if all I have to do it's think of something else to say instead.
It's a habit but I'll work on it OP.

LumpySpaceGoddess · 26/04/2023 08:59

My catholic friend is always being blasphemous, she is worse than anyone else I know!

I don’t think people even think about it, I’m definitely guilty of it, growing up the phrases were all said by all the adults around me.

Neither myself or my DH are religious but we have made sure our kids say oh my gosh, not god, and cheese and rice etc as we do live in a very Christian part of the country, their friends to tease them for it though!
