To wish people would stop saying 'Jesus' all the bloody time

I can't read a thread on here without someone saying "Jesus Christ" or "Jesus wept" or similar.

I'm not a prude AT all and I have no issue with people swearing but as a Christian I find it highly offensive when people throw Jesus' name round in a negative way, without a thought for others' feelings and religions.

Most people wouldn't dream of using words that were offensive to other religions so why is it acceptable when it's 'Jesus?'.

This is a genuine message to ask people to PLEASE think before they post/speak.

Ive seen countless posts on MN over the years where people have tried to use the bible to justify homophobia. Others where people have tried to use religion to justify women been seen as less than men. And whenever people complain or say it offends them the posters will say that they have freedom of speech.

There are multiple countries where gay people are persecuted due to religon or religious groups use religious texts to justify denying women access to decent gynaecological care. Or religious practices where women are forced to stay in abusive marriages.

Next to that a few Jesus Christs and OMGs are nothing. Maybe it is ungracious but I will take that over homophobia, misogyny and preventable womens deaths. And I say that as a Christian.

Thanks for your comment. I dont believe that it's an either/or situation.

Yes.....some people can use the name of religion to make some totally horrendous claims. That does not make their position right.

Is this scenario not like saying.....Well I know people who have done x y and z.........so therefore I'm lumping you into that basket too and I'd rather not try to bear in mind something that makes you feel extremely uncomfortable.

As stated before, I'm certainly not trying to police someone's language, but f tables were turned, I would try as best I could not to unnecessarily upset someone, even if that person was from a group whose ideals I didn't 100pc align with

I am Christian and don't mind as long as we can be just as abusive about all other faiths.

Yes, I am happy to do this. I think all religious people are idiots.

I would love a video posted by big bollocks who call Jesus a sky fairy, going to a Mosque and calling Muhammad a sky fairy.

Why? Muslims believe Jesus and Mohammed were just men, not deities.

Happy too, as long as we agree all atheists are idiots.

I would suggest that is because Christians are not so stupid that they go around murdering people who say things they find offensive towards their God. We live in a time in which followers of religion are becoming less prevalent. The UK is no longer considered a Christian country. Personally I am not a believer and I find it truly annoying as a nurse with a scientific back ground when I see loads of posts on facebook next to a child who is dying with cancer beseeching the Lord to save this child. Considering how many people Ive nursed with cancer, many of whom were religious and still died, along with all the people who are killed in wars, I dont understand how anyone thinks praying will help. For me, when I hear people saying The Lord will take care of us..., its not only an easy way to shift responsibility from ourselves to an unseen entity but a rather misplaced sense of safety.

I pity your Muslim patients, if you see them all as murderers.

God help you.

Out of curiosity, would a Muslim find the taking of Jesus' name in vain offensive, because he is in the Quran too as the Prophet Jesus rather than the Son of God.

Yes, absolutely.

You can think what you like. I wouldn't have the cheek to try and police your thoughts or words. I am not unhinged and religious.

FrownedUpon · 25/04/2023 20:25

I agree. If certain other important religious names were used, there would be uproar. Christianity is bottom of the pile sadly.

Oh please - give over.

Also to the OP - if you're concerned about swearing being blasphemous why do you put 'bloody' in your title? As that is also swearing. Hypocritical.

Christ on a bike, with Mary on the handlebars......can't get worked up about that....it's 2023

takealettermsjones · 25/04/2023 20:25

I was raised Catholic and my current church is CoE, and in my experience nobody blasphemes more than Christians! You can't go two minutes without my very Catholic grandma going "Jesus, Mary and Joseph" or "blessed mother Mary" etc!

This is likely how using 'jesus' as a 'swear word' originated. Used by Christians as a plea for help in bad situations. So how is it offensive to Christians?!

MysteriesOfTheOrganism · 26/04/2023 06:17

I suspect Jesus would be far more offended by all the Christains here and in the USA who believe he's a white guy who loves guns, hates immigrants, thinks poor people are feckless scroungers and considers Donald Trump a wonderful human being.

MintJulia · 26/04/2023 06:19

'But people don't. That's my point. It wouldn't be accepted. And rightly so.'

People don't invoke other deities because they haven't been part of the UK's culture for the past two millennia. The whole reason of swearing is to use a powerful expression, and in the UK, that means God, or Jesus etc.

And since a majority in the UK now have no faith, swearing is generally pretty inoffensive.

We are a country of free speech and that means I can swear if I stub my toe, without having to worry about what anyone else thinks. It is completely harmless.

tinytemper66 · 26/04/2023 06:33

I am a Catholic and am guilty of this on times. I do try to say jeepers or something else but sometimes it slips out.

I don't believe in your sky fairy, or anyone else's. Culturally, I am predisposed to blaspheme using the lead religion in my country and the one to which my pare ta attempted to indoctrinate me. I will use whatever language I please, with no guilt. Ta.

Couldn't have put it better myself Smile

Sunflowers80 · 26/04/2023 07:25

Jesus jog on. He was more concerned with other stuff 😆

OMG12 · 26/04/2023 07:27

Are Christians offended because it breaks one of the 10 commandments or something else?

Leftoverssandwich · 26/04/2023 07:34

Bloody Mary has a different entomology to bloody almost every else (except the Bloody Tower in the Tower of London). I was taught as a child that they were the only inoffensive uses of the adjective bloody. I accept that my mother was probably not considering any occasion in which someone might need to use it in a medical context of course. But it was considered bloody rude for many years.

I’m an atheist. If people want to believe in a supernatural figure then I’m not going out of my way to upset them, but, worldwide, lives are adversely affected in a myriad of ways in the name of religion. It’a growing in the US right now, for example. Throughout history enormous violence and oppression has been inflicted on people allegedly on the grounds of faith. If I were a believer I would wonder whether my god might be more disturbed by that than the use of a name.

Oh my days by the way is in common use among The Youth round my way. It obviously stems from an alternative used by parents who wanted to avoid saying oh my god, but it’s caught on widely as saying. I don’t think it’s pathetic. I like hearing it - it sounds quaint coming from teenage boys on the bus in the middle of a barrage of swear words.

Conkersinautumn · 26/04/2023 07:34

I find it repugnant that religions are allowed to perpetuate their lies in public, but its all about live and let live in a modern world. Compromise is part of real life.

NeonBoomerang · 26/04/2023 07:37

Jesus H. Christ, Christ on a Bike, and Christ on a Bendy Bus are my current favourites.

I totally believe in Jesus. I don't doubt he existed and was very influential. He wasn't resurrected or any of that bollocks though.

And yeah, when I was growing up, unsolicited Christianity was shoved in my face but I didn't ever believe in that particular fairy tale. I'm thankful that kids of today don't get that nonsense taught as fact at school or have to sing hymns, etc.

I'll say what I like.

Because generally, in a meeting, or when someone is being really stupid or similar the situations, you can't say 'for fuck's sake'

Wellnowlookhere · 26/04/2023 07:43

I like to spread the blaspheme name game round for a bit of variation. ‘Crikey Moses’ is a firm favourite of mine and my parents were keen on ‘Godfather Green’ for a bit when I was a kid. Maybe I’ll add that in to my repertoire.
Although, I also like ‘Nora Shitsticks’ so I must take this opportunity now to apologise to any Nora’s whose name I am taking in vain too.
