To wish people would stop saying 'Jesus' all the bloody time

I can't read a thread on here without someone saying "Jesus Christ" or "Jesus wept" or similar.

I'm not a prude AT all and I have no issue with people swearing but as a Christian I find it highly offensive when people throw Jesus' name round in a negative way, without a thought for others' feelings and religions.

Most people wouldn't dream of using words that were offensive to other religions so why is it acceptable when it's 'Jesus?'.

This is a genuine message to ask people to PLEASE think before they post/speak.

I know, I can’t stand it nor the fact that it seemingly tolerated even for primary school aged children to say it. The parents don’t bat an eyelid when their young child says “Oh my God” and it makes me cringe. Apparently they say it at school too without repercussion.

SpringyAF · 25/04/2023 21:54

Well I asked him and he said he doesn’t mind.

Also, he said it’s ok for the big Tesco to open late on a Sunday.

Agree Christianity isn't protected in the way other religions often are, especially Islam.

You read that in the Daily Mail?

Sorry, YABU.

You can't impose your own belief system on other people.

And yet so many groups feel entitled to nowadays.

DogInATent · 25/04/2023 21:55

Complaining others shouldn't use christian expletives and querying why they don't use terms from other religions as expletives in a country you presumably regard as a christian country. I think that counts as having your union jack cake and eating it.

Honestly I thought it was just an old fashioned nonsense word like gee, shucks and golly😂

You learn something new every day!

Well, "Gee" will be from Jesus as well, I presume.

Ahh, if you hadn’t read the whole thread you would be poor at summarising it then. Fair enough.

You posted something pretty silly and I found it funny, which I expressed by lightheartedly calling it a wild claim. That's quite mild and in no way a personal attack so . . . you're coming on a bit strong with the two replies attempting to insult me?

I mean, do carry on if you like though. I shall turn the other cheek, like Jesus

ImNotCrazyIWasTested · 25/04/2023 21:56

I was taught Spanish as a kid (1 parent emigrated to a Spanish speaking country) I have a proper Yorkshire accent though (born and bred).
I say and my children have picked up and copy,
Jesús (Spanish pronunciation 'Hey Zeus')
Mary (Yorkshire accent)
and Joseph (Scottish accent) 😅

I'm always sad when someone blasphemes. I always try not to offend people because it's polite not to upset someone, so it's nice if someone extends the same courtesy to me. I don't know a single Christian at my fairly large church who blasphemes. It would feel odd to me if someone claimed to be a Christian and did so......To me, it makes light of the Son of God and all He means. But I understand that if someone is not a Christian, they won't feel the same way.

Which book is ‘Christ on a bike’ in? 😁

I believe it's St Paul's epistle to the Velocipedes—a work which, however, some argue is spurious.

DaisyDieter · 25/04/2023 20:53

Jesus Christ, OP, what in the bloody Jesus do you expect me to say instead?

Holy fuck?

Velvian · 25/04/2023 21:59

I sort of think that Jesus belongs to me as much as to a practising Christian. OK, I don't believe in God, so don't think he was the son of God, but I went to church schools, had to sing about him multiple times per day. Stories of his life were told to me throughout my childhood.

I'm not a Christian, but the Christian tradition and Jesus belongs to me as much as you OP. I think that is true of a vast number of adults brought up in the UK.

What repercussion would you like there to be for people saying 'oh my god' in non faith settings?

OMG12 · 25/04/2023 22:01

Oh and it should be remembered that Christ was not part of Jesus’s name and just refers to one anointed by God
and again a Greek translation.

Notjustabrunette · 25/04/2023 22:01

HeadbandOverMyEyes · 25/04/2023 20:22

Why do you think "bloody" is a swear -word, out of interest?

It refers to the blood of Christ.

SnotSnotSnottySnot · 25/04/2023 22:02

I once went out with a Spanish doctor called Jesus. I said Jesus a LOT during that relationship ☺️

I don't believe in any mystical sky daddy characters either, so I will continue to ucse Jesus and/or hrist on a bike willy nilly.

Redebs · 25/04/2023 22:02

VaccineSticker · 25/04/2023 21:18

Btw- the same thing is not offensive in Islam. You can use “Mohammad” or “my Allah” and it is totally ok as opposed to the equivalent use in Christianity which is seen as offensive.

But Muslims wouldn't use the name of any prophet, including Jesus- peace be upon him- as a swear word.

Lots of ethnically traditional UK people do though and for Christians to want them to spread the disrespect to historically disadvantaged populations is petty and absurd.

Mycathatesmecuddling · 25/04/2023 22:05

Jesus preached that taking the Lords name in vain (the commandment) referred to hypocrites, people who called themselves followers of God (taking the Lords name) whilst not following his ways (in vain)

So someone who doesnt believe in God cannot break this commandment as they are literally not taking the Lords name in vain, so there is little point in berating them.

Those who are breaking this commandment are Christians who call themselves Christian's but dont follow the teachings, those are the ones that need forgiveness

Abacusporttaco · 25/04/2023 22:06

I say ‘Jesus Christ on a bike’, all the time. And ‘Jesus H,’ and ‘fucking hellfire,’ and ‘Christ al-fucking-mighty,’ because I don’t find anything else emphatic enough at portraying my exasperation.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 25/04/2023 22:06

CheerIeader · 25/04/2023 20:25

At Catholic school in the early nineties, we were told it was a contraction of By Our Lady, meaning Mary.
Not sure that's actually true.

My Catholic friend told me that when we were kids way back in the 60s.

I’d argue most mainstream Christian’s are followers of Paul more than the teacher called Jeshua. So could understand them getting pissed of if you shouted Oh my Paul!

I would happily draw a picture of Mohammed/dude who tripped out in a cave/ did a Constantine.

Forestfire12345 · 25/04/2023 22:09

🤣These phrases are Birnam from Christians themselves! Away you go !

Quidigiturinquam · 25/04/2023 22:11

I suddenly realized that I try to avoid saying 'Christ', 'Jesus', and 'God' and make up other expletive phrases instead ('Holy flying fuck on a hoverboard', 'Shit on toast with a side of worms', etc.) not because I am believe, but because I don't. It's strange, but I don't want to bring them in precisely because it's appealing to things I think are non-existent. I am not sure what's going on here as I only just realized it, while reading this thread.

My mother-in-law used to say 'Jesus Christ' a lot—and she was Jewish. My husband, who is also Jewish (obviously) also says it, though he says other things too. It was the dominant culture they were brought up in that determined which words carry the right sort of weight for this purpose, as they have done for lots of commenters here. Christians in a secular society have to put up with that, just as atheists put up with the sound of Church bells on Sundays and the sight of the British Head of State being crowned in a Christian Cathedral.

In the US we have Christian Republicans trying to take away women's reproductive rights because they believe in "the sanctity of life". (Or at any rate that's what they claim; I think their motivation is really to control women.) That is a bit harder to stomach, frankly, than hearing the Lord's name being taken in vain.
