To wish people would stop saying 'Jesus' all the bloody time

I can't read a thread on here without someone saying "Jesus Christ" or "Jesus wept" or similar.

I'm not a prude AT all and I have no issue with people swearing but as a Christian I find it highly offensive when people throw Jesus' name round in a negative way, without a thought for others' feelings and religions.

Most people wouldn't dream of using words that were offensive to other religions so why is it acceptable when it's 'Jesus?'.

This is a genuine message to ask people to PLEASE think before they post/speak.

The devil is in the detail ....

@Silentbarking thank you. That is some interesting information and a charming story from mark twain too.

nopuppiesallowed · 25/04/2023 22:12

@OMG12
I've been to many different churches in different areas since I became a Christian and every single Christian has been a follower of Jesus, not Paul.....

You posted something pretty silly and I found it funny, which I expressed by lightheartedly calling it a wild claim. That's quite mild and in no way a personal attack so . . . you're coming on a bit strong with the two replies attempting to insult me?

I mean, do carry on if you like though. I shall turn the other cheek, like Jesus

I’m really not. It’s nice that you’re turning the other cheek though.

Jesus in Brooklyn was my Dad's favourite

Meh, most of the New Testament was probably written by Paul. Most churches follow Paul’s interpretation of Jesus. Really to be a follower of Jesus you need to be a Jew.

Well I asked him and he said he doesn’t mind.

Also, he said it’s ok for the big Tesco to open late on a Sunday.

🤣

BananaCocktails · 25/04/2023 20:56

@Putyourdamnshoeson I bet you wouldn’t say Mohammed wept though would you?

@BananaCocktails Well, probably not, as it is not famously the shortest verse in the King James Bible.
I also don't often blaspheme by referencing religions in which I wasn't raised. That would be odd. Anglican Christianity is the established church, as we are constantly reminded is the state religion in the UK.
I am Irish, now living in England. It would be forced and fake for me to regularly blaspheme referencing Allah, although it has been known.
I do however take exception at the subjugation of women in the name of that particular sky fairy.

Hairbrushhandle · 25/04/2023 22:18

Why would you assume 'oh my god' related to the god you believe in? I know when I say it I'm referring to the great spaghetti monster in the sky. Ramen.

ModestMoon · 25/04/2023 22:18

Mycathatesmecuddling · 25/04/2023 22:05

Jesus preached that taking the Lords name in vain (the commandment) referred to hypocrites, people who called themselves followers of God (taking the Lords name) whilst not following his ways (in vain)

So someone who doesnt believe in God cannot break this commandment as they are literally not taking the Lords name in vain, so there is little point in berating them.

Those who are breaking this commandment are Christians who call themselves Christian's but dont follow the teachings, those are the ones that need forgiveness

Applause for this response!

OP you can't say it because you have a personal relationship with God. You love him and he loves you. Us atheists don't have any relationship with God, so it's fine for us to exclaim his name when we drop our ice cream on the floor.

You believe in your magical bollocks.

who cares if Jesus is a swear word.

the least “Christian” people I know seem to those who attend church and seems more evil the closer to the front they sit. Biggest group of Hippocrates out there.

Christ on a bike - stop trying to police people’s language

Christ on a bike, with Mary on the handlebars......can't get worked up about that....it's 2023

With Mary on the handlebars 😭😂

I've never heard that part before. Good one.

Red0 · 25/04/2023 22:21

monsteramunch · 25/04/2023 22:00

What repercussion would you like there to be for people saying 'oh my god' in non faith settings?

I just feel like it’s not appropriate language for a primary school aged child. Much like “bloody hell”. The only repercussion I would expect/like is for the child to be asked not to use that language in school. I feel it’s inappropriate.

Snugglemonkey · 25/04/2023 22:22

nopuppiesallowed · 25/04/2023 21:56

I'm always sad when someone blasphemes. I always try not to offend people because it's polite not to upset someone, so it's nice if someone extends the same courtesy to me. I don't know a single Christian at my fairly large church who blasphemes. It would feel odd to me if someone claimed to be a Christian and did so......To me, it makes light of the Son of God and all He means. But I understand that if someone is not a Christian, they won't feel the same way.

You might want to look at a the larger sample of Ireland. There are many Christians. Even the nuns at my convent school said "God almighty", "Sweet Jesus" , "Lord bless us and save us" and loads more religious exclaimations.

WhatWouldJeevesDo · 25/04/2023 22:22

Why do you see it as negative? It’s not as if people are swearing false oaths. Calling on God or Jesus to witness anything out of the ordinary is perfectly respectful.

Kanfuzed123 · 25/04/2023 22:23

JamSandle · 25/04/2023 20:22

Agree Christianity isn't protected in the way other religions often are, especially Islam.

Yes, let’s make it islamaphobic too.

let’s not forget the war on Christmas, gosh it’s so hard to be Christian in the west, all that discrimination, unconscious bias and negative rhetoric in the media. Christianity and Christian’s are constantly being attacked and undermined, always treated with an air of suspicion…

oh wait

Whatafliberty · 25/04/2023 22:25

I feel the same. What If we went round yelling Allah or Jehova? I am the first to say fuck this or that but I draw the line with this.

golddustwomen · 25/04/2023 22:25

Jesus H Christ !!! Is my favourite.

Putyourdamnshoeson · 25/04/2023 20:21

I don't believe in your sky fairy, or anyone else's. Culturally, I am predisposed to blaspheme using the lead religion in my country and the one to which my pare ta attempted to indoctrinate me. I will use whatever language I please, with no guilt. Ta.

I could have put money on “sky fairy” coming up and lo and behold, here it is within the first couple of comments.

You do know Christians don’t believe God is literally, physically in the sky, right? Are you genuinely that ignorant or are you just saying it to be snide and dismissive?

And fairies are from Celtic/Germanic folklore, so a completely different worldview/tradition. Although syncretised with angels/demons historically. So not equated to the Christian God at all?

If you think you were indoctrinated, they clearly didn’t do a very good job since that would imply… I dunno… a basic grasp of doctrine?

Meh, most of the New Testament was probably written by Paul. Most churches follow Paul’s interpretation of Jesus. Really to be a follower of Jesus you need to be a Jew.

Interestingly, Jesus (peace be upon him) wanted to base his legacy on Peter (base the Church on the solid 'rock' petrus) who had a much less authoritarian perspective on faith than Paul. No popes or palaces, perhaps if there hadn't been a Pauline coup.

It’s quite common in arab speaking countries when you’ve had a shock to say ‘oh Allah….’ Ive seen it myself and follow a guy who does uncle Youssef sketches on TikTok and that’s like his thing… so it would be a bit weird for a non Arab to say it as it’s not your mother tongue so probably would come off as being incendiary, but Muslims wouldn’t really be the ones saying ‘Jesus Christ’ as a swear word anyway

Hahaha! Well, I am Celtic, so, that explains that.
I am being flippant, as I'm sure you know.
I intend to be snide and dismissive. Religion is extremely damaging.
