To wish people would stop saying 'Jesus' all the bloody time

I can't read a thread on here without someone saying "Jesus Christ" or "Jesus wept" or similar.

I'm not a prude AT all and I have no issue with people swearing but as a Christian I find it highly offensive when people throw Jesus' name round in a negative way, without a thought for others' feelings and religions.

Most people wouldn't dream of using words that were offensive to other religions so why is it acceptable when it's 'Jesus?'.

This is a genuine message to ask people to PLEASE think before they post/speak.

I was brought up catholic. My mother was devoutly Catholic.

My mother never, ever swore. ... BUT surely swearing is about the intent rather than the combination of letters that becomes a word.

Whilst she never 'swore', I remember 'You are enough to make a saint swear'.

Huh, So although she didn't swear, she .... well, I don't really need to say any more. The implication was - I was awful ... she was wonderful because .... my awful behaviour (as an unconforming child) didn't make her swear BUT would have made a Saint swear.

Is it any (fucking) wonder - I don't have any respect for religion any more (I respect faith but not religion)

I understand how you feel

My mum also never swears because she is Christian

She did abuse us though, repeatedly

And hit us (and I don't mean smack I mean hit me across the face hard enough to send my glasses flying across the room) for using Jesus Christ as an exclamation

I have met far far better Christians who would think nothing of saying OMG but actually live their Christianity and would never abuse a child

A bit of blasphemy doesnt automatically make you a bad Christian or person. Avoiding blasphemy doesnt automatically make you a good Christian or person.

Now this one is just too far for me - not a short expletive - but incredibly disrespectful

Enjoying the view - wtaf??!!
This has actually really upset me

I know loads worse than that.

meatyryvita · 25/04/2023 21:41

This is the thing that bothers me about religion. It gives you freedom to do whatever is within your beliefs, it doesn’t allow you to impose them on others.

tatteddear · 25/04/2023 21:42

@CheerIeader I was told that too-also at catholic school.

jackstini · 25/04/2023 21:42

@Loria - worse that taking the piss out of someone who was being murdered?!
Wow

You do know that crucifixion is still used in the world today?

Loria · 25/04/2023 21:45

Yes.

Now, answer me this : what does the H stand for in Jesus H Christ?

SnuggleBuggleBoo · 25/04/2023 21:45

My dad says 'Jesus wept' and I don't like it, or any use of 'Jesus' as a negative exclamation because he was a real person and it's disrespectful. I don't see a problem with 'Oh my God' though. It's MY God, not yours!

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 25/04/2023 21:46

I veer more towards jaysus than jesus. I feel jaysus expresses more exasperation.

OMG12 · 25/04/2023 21:47

Meh, it’s a transliteration of prob Jeshua ben Joseph. So it wasn’t even the purported son of God’s name.

God wasn’t god either, variously Adanoi, Elohim, YHVH, Eyheh etc etc. you’re being offended over nothing. Turn the other cheek. )oh and I’m not changing my user name)

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 25/04/2023 21:47

Well being Irish we use those words all the time, I think it was because the church and religion was pushed down our necks and I no longer go to church more spiritual now. But Jesus Christ is a big one we use here and no one passes any heed really. Is worse words can be using.

whumpthereitis · 25/04/2023 21:49

jackstini · 25/04/2023 21:42

@Loria - worse that taking the piss out of someone who was being murdered?!
Wow

Executed. Murder would be extra-judicial.

That is really thoughtful and gracious of you.

Personally I hate blasphemy and I find it really awful to hear especially things like jesus, jesus christ or jc on a bike etc.....I hate even having to type that, but need to make clear what I mean.

i tend to just pretend I haven't heard it if I'm in earshot or if a colleague at work is speaking directly to me. If I'm asked though.......I will mention that I hate blasphemy and find it upsetting.....and some people have said they'll try to bear it in mind and try not to do it around me, which I really appreciate.

I just don't understand why so many are so ungracious on this thread. If I knew something genuinely upset others I'd try my best not to do it anymore, or at least not in front of them......even if I didn't agree with their sentiment.

Ive seen countless posts on MN over the years where people have tried to use the bible to justify homophobia. Others where people have tried to use religion to justify women been seen as less than men. And whenever people complain or say it offends them the posters will say that they have freedom of speech.

There are multiple countries where gay people are persecuted due to religon or religious groups use religious texts to justify denying women access to decent gynaecological care. Or religious practices where women are forced to stay in abusive marriages.

Next to that a few Jesus Christs and OMGs are nothing. Maybe it is ungracious but I will take that over homophobia, misogyny and preventable womens deaths. And I say that as a Christian.

MrsHughesPinny · 25/04/2023 21:49

I say Christ on a Bike, Jesus H Roosevelt Christ (thanks, Outlander) and Christ and Crackers a lot. It doesn’t mean anything, it’s just words. The reason we say that instead of any others is because most of us here were raised with Christianity being the dominant religion of the country.

It’s not intended to offend Christians, it’s just a turn of phrase. I also say buggery bollocks, shit a brick and fuck a doodle do. Those don’t mean anything either!

Notimeforaname · 25/04/2023 21:50

Is Jaysus allowed? We love that one over here.

SeatonCarew · 25/04/2023 21:50

HeadbandOverMyEyes · 25/04/2023 20:22

Why do you think "bloody" is a swear -word, out of interest?

Because it stands for "By Our Lady". It is a blasphemy, though probably few people know it nowadays. Generally considered at the lower end of the scale I'd guess, but still a blasphemy.

SpringNTing · 25/04/2023 21:50

I’m Irish. We are generally Catholics. Everyone in my family says ‘Jesus/Jayzus’ repeatedly. I won’t be stopping.

whynotwhatknot · 25/04/2023 21:50

dont live me near then its used quite a lot

watch the family guy episode turban cowboy if you dont find it offensive bloody brilliant

Easterfunbun · 25/04/2023 21:51

I particularly like describing things that are dry by saying “it’s as dry as a nuns cunt”.

Heartsnrainbows · 25/04/2023 21:51

I'm inclined to 'Christ on a cracker', myself.

whumpthereitis · 25/04/2023 21:51

I’ve heard ‘Jesus fuck me gently with a chainsaw’. The chainsaw part was presumably from Heathers, with Jesus thrown in to add a twist. Quite liked that one.

Snugglemonkey · 25/04/2023 21:52

Putyourdamnshoeson · 25/04/2023 20:21

I don't believe in your sky fairy, or anyone else's. Culturally, I am predisposed to blaspheme using the lead religion in my country and the one to which my pare ta attempted to indoctrinate me. I will use whatever language I please, with no guilt. Ta.

Quite. I am Irish. It is my cultural heritage to make frequent references to God, Jesus, Mary and sometimes Joseph. It is practically obligatory.

Putyourdamnshoeson · 25/04/2023 21:53

@Snugglemonkey I too am Irish.

ChristmasKraken · 25/04/2023 21:53

BananaCocktails · 25/04/2023 20:56

@Putyourdamnshoeson I bet you wouldn’t say Mohammed wept though would you?

Well it wouldn't make sense for anyone to say that, since "Jesus wept" is famously a quote from the bible (the shortest verse I believe).
