To think F off it’s my business if I take my kids to…

Walt Disney world florida.

kids will be both under 5, booked our first family to WDW florida and I’m incredibly excited as can’t wait to go and we got a great deal price wise BUT the reaction is not what I’ve been expecting.

in the travel agent on booking, older woman overheard and felt the need to say it’s absolutely silly taking children that young… I was taken aback

then at work chatting about upcoming holidays met with such reactions as ‘fucking idiots’ and selfish and more money than sense . My boss actually had to sort of intervene because the conversation felt quite heated and aggressive… since when did this become a thing? Why are people so against taking young children to Disney?

totally fine if it’s not your scene but it’s mine and kids under 3 are free so you don’t pay, mine have been to euro Disney twice and loved it . I don’t get this attitude

our only child (son now 14) was also 5 when we first went to Florida. We had an amazing time. He was 9 when we visited for the second time and didn’t remember anything from the first time. We also had people saying we were stupid and wasting money as he wouldn’t remember it. Which he didn’t but we as parents did. We remember and have photos and videos of him dancing with goofy in magic kingdom, of the absolutely amazed look on his face as the steamboat came round with all the Disney character on at fantasia in the evening. Yes ok he doesn’t remember much now and that made it exciting again for him when we went the second time but I would never change taking him at 5. The memories for us as parents were priceless. You get a different type of excitement when you take them when they’re older and it’s not on the level that you get when they’re so young. Take them and enjoy the moment. Take lots of photos and videos and in years to come you’ll sit back and look at the wonder on their faces. Ignore the haters. They’re always going to be someone out there telling you what to do with your money and your life. You do what you want to for your family. I hope you all have an amazing time.

EDVLL · 25/04/2023 12:43

People are right in saying your kids won’t remember this, but they will have a great time when they are there and YOU will remember it. I take my daughter loads of places she won’t remember and am fully aware at her age the memories are for me and her Dad, people seem to forget that there is enjoyment to be had out of parenting and the memories are nice for us too.

OP, if you take anything away from this - Don't discuss your holidays with your colleagues. I also find it strange that your manger needed to get involved. Where do you work?

Abouttimemum · 25/04/2023 12:56

We’re taking our 4 year old next week - we’ve had nothing but positive reactions to be honest! We’ve been before so he’ll definitely love it. No doubt.

for a very large finance company in a mid senior position, shan’t say the actual company because if I didn’t know better I’d have thought some of my colleagues from lunch are posting on this thread. If I’d have known it was going to be quite so divisive I wouldn’t have mentioned it when asked where I’m going this year, I’m just going to hope it doesn’t come up again and if I’m going away say ‘no where yet, looking at a few places’.

With no car and 10 nights I’d just do Disney. If you have the ultimate tickets water parks and mini golf are included if you fancy a change.
I’ve personally always felt safe on Disney property it’s airport style security to enter the parks.
Happy planning.

That’s pretty much what we’ve settled on, knowing we’ll come back before the eldest is 9.

Thank you!genuinely shocked at some of the reactions on this thread. You’d think I was taking them to Syria

Disney does provoke strong reactions! The dibb is a friendly British Disney planning forum with likeminded people on. Great for tips and advice.

Disneydisneydisneydisney · 23/04/2023 12:45

I just don’t get why it incites such strong feelings in people, might as well just stay at home all the time according to some

I agree with PP, it's a jealousy thing

And whilst I personally wouldn't thank you for a holiday to WDWF, I would be envious that you're going away as we have never had a foreign holiday as a family (managed a week in Whitley Bay in a caravan and everyone hated it).

But that's their problem, not yours.

Have a fabulous time!!!

*Very much doubt its jealousy. 4k for 10 days is actually obscene for any holiday but for tackiness it's extreme, 400 pounds a day! You know there are theme parks with teacups in the UK? I do hope you are planning on seeing some of the USA as well as a theme park. But it is your money.

I think they are flabbergasted and quite offended at the idea of disneyworld not jealous.*

All of this is absolutely weird Confused Honestly MN has the strangest comments.

MonkeyHarold · 25/04/2023 13:56

How fucking rude of people to comment negatively. Your opinions on someone's personal decisions should only be given when asked for. As for your children not remembering, so what? Should we not do anything good with our children until we are sure they will remember it? I hate all that 'making memories' shit. Enjoy the moment. I'm sure I've had some brilliant times as an adult that I have absolutely no memory of.

Lolalady · 25/04/2023 13:56

We took our children to Disney World twice in the 1990s but waited until they were old enough to go on the rides as didn’t see the sense in taking them all that way to then not be able to participate in a vast percentage of what the park has to offer. However it’s a personal choice so you do whatever suits you

Turkey is not the same, its better value and you are paying into local businesses not the gov, not a very rich man with dubious values pockets.

she doesn’t want to go to a theme park in the UK, so why would she?

It’s hardly obscene. She can afford it, and it’s not a ‘once in a lifetime’ holiday, so it’s not imperative that her kids remember it. That you consider it tacky is irrelevant. It’s not where I would want to go either, but that’s got nothing to do with OP and it doesn’t mean she’s wrong for wanting to go.

I can’t imagine why anyone would think their opinion on someone else’s holiday choice is so important that it requires sharing. If you wouldn’t want to spend that amount or go to that destination then don’t, no one’s asking you to do either.

It may well have changed, but I’d say a child over 102 cm (which eldest will most likely be) can go on 80% of things there and my youngest probably 60/70%

Boomboom22 · 25/04/2023 14:09

Ok op in your world holidays cost 4k. Get a grip on reality. Many many families spend 500 or 1k on their one holiday a year. 400 a day I clearly obscene, come on now. Families like mine with about 70k income spend absolute max 1k excluding food and go to Europe or UK eg holiday parks. Butlins and centreparks are also quite expensive. If people really want to save a whole months salary and god knows how many months spare money on holidays they can but its not that usual. If it was why when there is a debt thread do people say it'll take years to clear a few thousand?

Also people are not jealous of Disney. They just think you are wasting so much money it does upset or offend them you would spend that kind if money on this. Even if they have loads more money than you and would spend 10k on a China 2 week trip. Because of the whole idea of Disney and what they define a holiday as.

Like I say, your money so do what you want. But stop pretending you don't get how tactless you are or why people don't like Disney as a destination!

burnoutbabe · 25/04/2023 14:19

The dibb is a website and forum - i used it many times for planning all my trips (doing all 6 parks over next 2 years, china will be most hassle to get to but only one I have not been to yet - we are 2 adults no kids).

And on facebook there is "Disney and orlando for Brits" - lots of useful advice and trip reports.

Bunnycat101 · 25/04/2023 14:20

@Boomboom22 I do think your reaction is a bit extreme on this. £4k isn’t obscene for a holiday. It’s going to be pretty good value for Florida and very good value compared to the Lapland day trips that plenty of families do. People spend a lot of their income on holidays. You might find it uncomfortable but I know plenty of people who would prioritise their holiday over every other type of discretionary spending. Even as a student when I had very little, I spent my spare money on travel. I see absolutely nothing wrong with the OP planning a holiday she and her family will enjoy and she didn’t deserve snide comments from her work colleagues.

Boomboom22 · 25/04/2023 14:23

So families, average household income 38k in the UK, spend around 4k on holidays? Maybe the top 15% max do. I highly doubt the rest.

Website the dibb.com
It’s a British Disney planning forum. No one will say why or too young on there!

Dixiechickonhols · 25/04/2023 14:38

A 4 yr old can go on vast majority of Disney Rides as they will usually be 102cm.
A 2.5 yr old can go on lots of rides plus of course all the characters, shows, parades, fireworks, water parks, play areas. They have areas younger child waits with a parent then switch if parents and older want to ride a bigger ride (child swap)

To think F off it’s my business if I take my kids to…

Op says no one in conversation on less than £45k and conversation was about holidays others in the team were going to NZ, cruises etc. It’s not a scenario of Op bragging about her hol when everyone else going to a caravan in Wales.

Op’s paid £4500 inc tickets & transfers for 10 nights. She just needs their food & spends if they want any merchandise. Op can easily do food for £1000 or less - people have a shopping delivery, share meals as portions are huge etc.
I’ve never spent £8000.
