Waking us everyday at 6.30 am

Springinabundance · 22/04/2023 08:51

We have guests staying for ten days, it’s actually my parents. They go to bed at 9pm and wake at 6.30. They’re in the spare room right next to our room.
My dad wakes and goes to one of the bathrooms very close and brushes his teeth, clears his throat etc.
Dd, 4, is completely overtired and very difficult 😩
She needs 11 hours sleep to be her normal self. I take her up to bed at 7, but with the lighter evenings, she sometimes doesn’t fall asleep until 8.30.
I’ve asked my mum if they could please try to keep quieter in the mornings as Dd needs her sleep etc. She said it’s hard to stay in bed if you’re awake and up (she’s very quiet though tbf)
I don’t know what the solution is here 🤷🏻‍♀️
Dh is exhausted too as Dd is sharing with us, so he often comes down to sleep on the sofa…my dad comes down at 6.30 to make a coffee and open the doors etc
Our usual wake up time during the week is 8ish and weekends a bit later.
Its been another 6.30 start today and already Dd is acting nuts!

On one side, there's an overtired child not getting the sleep she needs, so her days (and because of the impact on mood/behaviour, those around her) are affected. For ten days.

On the other side, a pair of adults won't read/laze in bed for an extra hour or so each morning, because they don't want to.

YANBU, your parents could give a little.

MumUndone · 22/04/2023 09:18

I'm amazed your normal wake up time is 8am, lucky you! It's not nice to wake up earlier than you're used to, but I don't think 6.30am is too bad...maybe just ask your dad not to brush his teeth until a bit later?

Springinabundance · 22/04/2023 09:20

We’re all exhausted, I don’t think I’m being precious 😬

How do you manage only getting up at 8am?

5128gap · 22/04/2023 09:20

Difficult. They get up particularly early but you get up particularly late. Could you meet in the middle and ask them to stay quiet until 7.15? Other than the toilet obviously.

How do you manage only getting up at 8am?

I wondered this too! Much later than 7 and we would struggle to get the kids off to breakfast club and then get off to work.

Springinabundance · 22/04/2023 09:22

@Tootsey11 What do you mean?
School is 2 minutes drive away and starts at 9.15, I then drive 5 minutes to work for 9.30. We get up, I make Dds breakfast, she watches a little tv, then I get a shower and ready, then she gets dressed and hair and out we go.

If you have a week left to go, they have only been here three days. It’s a little extreme to ‘all be exhausted’ after three days of one hour less sleep.

Assume your child doesn’t go to school if they don’t want until 8?

RockGirl · 22/04/2023 09:24

I think your parents are being very rude.

It's typical of an egotistical man to go about his routine without any consideration for other people.

He may not be able to help needing the toilet, but he can read in bed for a bit without doing everything else, especially going downstairs and opening doors in a home that's not his!

FawnFrenchieMum · 22/04/2023 09:24

Cross post. Every school round here starts between 8:40-8:55.

qpmz · 22/04/2023 09:24

Can your parents make a drink then bring your dd in their room for a snuggle and stories? Then you can snooze for another hour?

Springinabundance · 22/04/2023 09:25

@RockGirl He has to be up and dressed to start the day 😩Dh is generally asleep on the sofa and he comes down to make coffee etc and open the patio to go in the back garden

@FawnFrenchieMum She goes to school everyday, latest to get in is 9.15, we tend to be there for 9
We're abroad so may be different

6.30 is not early though??

AutisticLegoLover · 22/04/2023 09:29

The school is 2 minutes away and work 5 minutes and you drive there? Walk and she might sleep better for some exercise. Your dad is being inconsiderate but you are being precious.

thevery · 22/04/2023 09:29

If your dh doesn't want to be disturbed in the mornings he should stop sleeping on the sofa in a communal area of the house.

Starhead69 · 22/04/2023 09:29

thevery · 22/04/2023 09:27

6.30 is not early though??

@thevery

its early and very much out of routine for them. 6.30 is not early for me but is for my husband and children. We’re all different. It’s annoying when people don’t consider this. 🙄

Springinabundance · 22/04/2023 09:29

@thevery I think it is 🙈
When Dd doesn’t actually fall asleep until 8:30 plus (despite me taking her up really early)

thevery · 22/04/2023 09:30

I agree re being precious

NoSquirrels · 22/04/2023 09:30

Your dad is the issue. Ask him directly if he could stay in bed until 7am.

UsherBobble · 22/04/2023 09:31

Are you abroad and your parents are visiting you from the uk?

Shinyandnew1 · 22/04/2023 09:31

I think if your child’s behaviour at the moment means she is sleeping in with you, which means your DH often ends up on the sofa, then having house guests for ten days that wake at 6.30, is just not a good idea.

Why does she sleep with you? Why can’t your DH go and get into her bed?

I would explain this to them-I’m presuming you all get along, and offer some alternatives… Which do they prefer

  1. they only stay for a weekend.
  2. they stay in a hotel.
  3. they can stay with you but can they stay in bed and read till 8.
  4. any ‘going out for meals’ isn’t going to be possible at 7am with an overtired child. Go out at lunchtimes instead
RampantIvy · 22/04/2023 09:31

It all sounds rather difficult. DH is 71 and once he is awake he can't stay in bed he has to get up and make himself a drink. Fortunately, he does this quietly and uses the downstairs loo so that he doesn't wake me.

I don't know what the answer is except that maybe next time they visit your parents could stay in an airbnb?

I'm surprised that you all get up as late as 8 am every day BTW.

Willmafrockfit · 22/04/2023 09:31

can you dad use a downstairs toilet?
i imagine she is excited because they are there..
