Well if people gonna die...

They already are and more so than 10 years ago…that’s why they are striking. Low nursing numbers are directly related to how many people die in hospital, and there still aren’t any laws on minimum nursing numbers. Why? It’s nurses that watch those people die unnecessarily and then go home to their families knowing that is the care they would receive if they got sick.
The government have their own ideology on the NHS and are systematically underfunding in an attempt to push that ideology because it would be political suicide to verbalise that ideology. We don’t train enough doctors to staff the NHS, it’s the government who set the number of training places per year. Same for nursing. I wouldn’t want my children studying nursing, because it’s not worth the university debt. That’s why pay is important.

Sarahconnor1 · 27/04/2023 12:11

The high Court has ruled that strike action on 2nd is unlawful

The RCN have dropped the ball on this one.

Howpo · 27/04/2023 12:24

Yep and i doubt the RCN members will vote for more action, Govt can literally pat themselves on the back and Cullen should resign.

Do you think? I’d have thought that actually it might backfire and more vote to strike as they will be mad?

dunno, maybe the midwives voting to accept the offer might take the wind out their sails as well.

L1ttledrummergirl · 27/04/2023 13:37

Dsil and her colleagues will all be voting for more action. They are thoroughly pissed off with the government.

Are they pissed off at the RCN too? The government are abhorrent so goes without saying but the unions been weak throughout and now fucked this up. Nurses deserve better.

Vinvertebrate · 27/04/2023 14:38

I wouldn’t like to be on the RCN’s legal team right now…

Mad yes but i think many think with other unions accepting the 5% offer, whats the chances of the Govt re visiting for them and hence everyone else too?

I think a lot will just leave and less want to be HCP's

So a win win for Govt, slowly dismantle the NHS whilst saying the support it 100% and cut the pay bill.

Tarantullah · 27/04/2023 14:48

To be fair though midwives reach band 6 a lot quicker and so perhaps don't feel the effects of lingering as a band 5 for ages as nurses do. The unions that voted for the deal previously probably were seduced by the higher rises for lower bands (despite min wage going up and so them rising anyway) and the one off payment. For any real change I suspect an overwhelming majority such as for the JD strikes is needed.

stokiemum62 · 27/04/2023 16:01

I'm fully behind the strike but what an utter shambles by the RCN, lost, as it was obvious they were going to and have been landed with costs on top. Their chief exec earns £197K apparently. The nurses deserve so much better, from the government but also from their own union.

Vinvertebrate · 27/04/2023 16:20

@RafaistheKingofClay because I presume they took legal advice which confirmed the validity of the strike? Which was wrong. (I mean, I know one of them had to lose, but I’m still having a cringe for the lawyers!) Thank fuck I’m not in private practice any more.

RafaistheKingofClay · 27/04/2023 18:22

I’ll need to check but my understanding was that the RCN were told the government weren’t going ti quibble over the exact time of the ending of the strike and there was some legal precedent.

The government then u turned.

They really ought to have taken Steve Barclays offer of not going to court from Friday if they weren’t going to send their lawyers to court this morning. It would have avoided the costs.

Howpo · 27/04/2023 19:19

From the terrible 19% "own goal" pay rise, where they didn't seem to know the difference between RPI and CPI, then recommending a super low pay rise and losing that vote, to getting their dates wrong (believing a Tory minister? WTF!) the RCN have been a terrible union.

Pay Cullen really needs to go, then get in leadership team who know how to deal with modern UK employers, who are utterly ruthless.

BluebellBlueballs · 21/04/2023 19:42

Well if people gonna die...

They will do regardless and nurses are not being paid or supported. Things will get worse

jcyclops · 27/04/2023 21:22

RCN members should have another vote - to elect a competent General Secretary.

Industrial disputes often end with both sides claiming victory. How can two abject losers ever expect to "win". Pat Cullen & Steve Barclay are both nauseating and thoroughly deserve each other.

RubyMurry22 · 27/04/2023 21:36

What a complete fuck update by the RCN 😫

Well if people gonna die...

No money for nurses but money for 'lefty lawyers'.
No time to negotiate, time to launch a legal case.
Poor excuse for a government.
