I don't believe we've been to the moon and SpaceXs failure further convinces me.

I know I've posted this before and the majority of you think I'm batty, but I don't think we've landed on the moon.

3 billion USD, a giant leap in technological advances and yet it can't even launch.

I'm with you OP, nobody's stepped foot on the moon

It’s amazing how many believe in governmental power and competence in regards to communications, but not in the thought and work of thousands of scientists and engineers widely separated in time and space.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 20/04/2023 18:12

It is really depressing how stupid some people are.

I agree. I just don't believe that in 1969 we had that level of technology. I think they underestimated the task then had to fake it, it was a huge political thing, it wasn't about science, they couldn't possibly have been allowed to fail

Lots of people watched the big rockets go into space. So they had to build the big rockets, but couldn't build the thingy on top to fly around the moon?
Your personal incredulity is no substitute for scientific reality.
Do you know when the world air speed record was set? Have a guess, then Google it...

In over 50 years the Russians and Chinese still haven't worked out how to send a manned crew to the moon. They can't work out how to get past the lethal radiation field. I'm with you OP - suspicious as hell!

What lethal radiation belts?

and simply saying "Van Allen" isn't an answer..

MuffinToSeeHere · 20/04/2023 18:13

I'm genuinely alarmed that so many people are admitting they don't think people have been on the moon!

you are being utterly ridiculous - just look through a telescope - you can see where we have been to the moon - not only was it in plain sight of every country in the world, but it still is

GasPanic · 20/04/2023 18:14

What's kind of interesting about starship is that it uses a ton of smaller engines rather than a small number (5 I think for Saturn V).

That means the integrity of each engine has to be pretty high because the cumulative probability it will explode becomes significant otherwise.

If you look on the launch, they lost about 5 of the engines (you can see it in the exhaust pattern). Presumably these were shut down because they indicated that they might fail. Apollo had the same sort of issues. On some of the launches some of the engines failed before full burn, so they had to burn the remaining ones for a lot longer to reach orbit.

What will you say when the first woman lands on the moon in 2026? It's all fake, because.

Tal12 · 20/04/2023 18:15

The moon is 384,400 km from Earth, the ISS is 408km away. Slight difference. I’m with you OP! Cold War space race propaganda, absolutely no way we’ve ever been to the moon! We studied it for our critical thinking AS level at school. Each to their own though, could be wrong - we’ll never know!

MissConductUS · 20/04/2023 18:15

All newly designed heavy payload rockets have launch failures. They load them up with telemetry so that they can determine what caused the loss and then fix it.

So yes, you are being batty about this.

The 12 biggest rocket failures of 2022 show why spaceflight is still hard

2022 saw it's share of spaceflight success stories, but there were also plenty of missions that didn't go as planned.

You need to watch moonstruck at the planetarium in Greenwich. I go every so often for a laugh (we have membership). Nothing about it convinces me that we have been to the moon either. There is a whole film section given over to the fantasy of what-could-be in terms of life on the moon in the near future. They lost me when they talked about the Indian astronauts discovering water on the moon, i don't know why but it all sounded made up.

Nimbostratus100 · 20/04/2023 18:15

you cant do things in secret on the moon, due to the fact it is visible from Earth 😂hence the knowledge that China has robots on the moon - clearly visible

Neededanewuserhandle · 20/04/2023 18:15

Well the number of people posting to say they don't think we have been to the moon just shows why we can't have nice things.

It's strange the US hasn't landed on the moon since, thought they'd have built a Mc Donald's and some sort of space military base by now. It was an incredible feat especially given the general capabilites of technology then, I do also find it strange but wouldn't say I don't believe it happened, I'm just open minded about it.

They didn't just go once. But as soon as it clear the Soviets couldn't do it the expense and hassle of running the Apollo programme was no longer worth it.

So for over 50 years no one has leaked that it was faked? The astronauts were bribed or threatened to lie for the rest of their lives , their stories remained consistent at all times? I think it would be harder to fake the moon landing and maintain the fiction than to actually go to the moon.

This.

It's also possible to bounce a signal off technology that's been placed on the moon and receive it back on Earth.

What do you mean we will never know? People have done it, actually real life human beings and they have spoken about it and there is actual real life evidence. what more proof do you want or will you only believe it if you yourself do it?

MrsSkylerWhite · 20/04/2023 18:19

I mean this is MN, the bar for discussion isn't very high, if you'd rather discuss not using people's washing line/the attractiveness of obsese women 🙄or weird made up family dynamics you are, in fairness, spoilt for choice”

Oh, to be as intelligent as you, OP.

(What are obsese women, btw?)

VanillaSnap · 20/04/2023 18:21

It doesn't really matter though. There's no decision in life that is contingent on the moon landings being fake or real.

GasPanic · 20/04/2023 18:21

It's impossible to see any space hardware on the moon from earth. It's not big enough. There is something called the Lunar range finding experiment which bounces lasers off reflectors left on the surface by Apollo, the Russians and probably the Chinese, which allows the earth-moon distance to be very precisely determined. But the only evidence of hardware (Apollo hardware) left on the moon was photographed from lunar orbit by spacecraft like the LRO.

I love all this stuff.

Eranzer · 20/04/2023 18:22

Yeah, I don't believe it either.
