I don't believe we've been to the moon and SpaceXs failure further convinces me.

I know I've posted this before and the majority of you think I'm batty, but I don't think we've landed on the moon.

3 billion USD, a giant leap in technological advances and yet it can't even launch.

It's strange the US hasn't landed on the moon since, thought they'd have built a Mc Donald's and some sort of space military base by now. It was an incredible feat especially given the general capabilites of technology then, I do also find it strange but wouldn't say I don't believe it happened, I'm just open minded about it.

VeryQuaintIrene · 20/04/2023 17:49

I am aghast that apparently 26% of voters agree with the OP - more concerning, actually, than the original post!

Neapolitanicecream · 20/04/2023 17:49

They need those hidden figures ladies obvs !!!!

Mustnot · 20/04/2023 17:51

The issue is that standards are so much higher now and agencies will abort launches for tiny reasons whereas years ago more risks were taken / tiny faults not identified so those ones went ahead

I believe in the ISS, I mean I'm not a crackpot, but no, I don't believe the images.

I'm only enough to remember watching it on a friends grainy TV, the idea of a smartphone was beyond comprehension and yet here I am typing on one and yet we still can't get to the moon.

I'm not a troll or a bot and I've not a new poster

It wasn't the Apollo 8 mission that went to the moon, it orbited it and took the famous earth rise photo in 1968.
That image is identical in land/seascape as the modern day images, because its of the same planet.
So if we can orbit the moon (demonstrably) and board a space station - why is the concept of landing on the moon an impossibility to you?

Quveas · 20/04/2023 17:51

I wasn't aware you'd posted before. But I certainly agree you are batty.

BMW6 · 20/04/2023 17:51

Tarantullah

The cost was prohibitive and because it looked to easy the public totally lost interest and started complaining about the costs.

Public interest revived briefly when it looked like Apollo 13 were going to die 🙄

RoseslnTheHospital · 20/04/2023 17:52

I think that what has faded a bit is the fact that it was a space race. It was a massive political drive, to push the USA to the forefront and demonstrate superiority over the USSR. The USSR had early wins and put the wind up the USA with the success of Sputnik and Gagarin's successes. Once the goal of being the first to get humans to the moon had been achieved, the political landscape changed and a continuing presence on the moon became less relevant and less of a priority. Then the shuttle disasters really did put the space race onto the back burners for a good while.

MagicSpring · 20/04/2023 17:53

Choice of four of the Apollo astronauts still alive, so you could always ask them:
Buzz Aldrin (Apollo 11)
David Scott (Apollo 15)
Charles Duke (Apollo 16)
Harrison Schmitt (Apollo 17)

Or the Lunar and Planetary Institute has rock samples:

Viburnam · 20/04/2023 17:55

I’ve felt precisely the same, particularly after todays failure. The thing that got me really thinking about the conspiracy was that the then Duke of Edinburgh was fascinated by the space mission and the moon landings and hosted a reception for the astronauts but was hugely disappointed by them and their apparent lack of knowledge.

Pleasecreateausername13 · 20/04/2023 17:57

The funny thing being that China would do anything discredit the US and even they have admitted they have seen the things left behind on the surface of the moon. From their own satellites etc.

AliceMay55 · 20/04/2023 17:34

I too think the conspiracy theory could be true, it was in the fcuking 1969 !! Why the f can’t we do it in 2023?
India’s Chandrayaan -2 failed too - didn’t it!

Mainly a couple of reasons -

Firstly: Money...

The Aerospace industry in the States was given a shed load of government money and almost went onto a war footing to meet Kennedy's deadline and beat the Soviets.

Secondly: Risk aversion.

Back in the 60's Management and individuals were more prepared to take risks with their careers and in some case with lives in order to meet Kennedy's deadline etc.

Aldrin famously decked some conspiraloon, who said he hadn't been to the moon.

Aishah231 · 20/04/2023 18:05

In over 50 years the Russians and Chinese still haven't worked out how to send a manned crew to the moon. They can't work out how to get past the lethal radiation field. I'm with you OP - suspicious as hell!

That proves it then!

Internationalwomendayheadquarters · 20/04/2023 18:06

I know you are getting some stick on here OP, but I’m totally with you.

I really don’t think it happened either.

mynameiscalypso · 20/04/2023 18:07

I thought the rocket launch today was a success? It's the heaviest rocket by a huge distance that they've ever tried to launch so to get it up even for a bit is a massive achievement.

GasPanic · 20/04/2023 18:08

OP, do you have any significant engineering/scientific qualifications that identify you as especially competent to draw this conclusion ?

It's not that we (as a species) can't do it in 2023, it's just that the few that could get there haven't wanted/needed to go again.

NASA and their partners are sending some people back in 2025 so you'll just have to wait till then. Although I can imagine those inclined toward conspiracies will say its fake no matter what.

DaaamnYoullDo · 20/04/2023 18:08

I agree. I just don't believe that in 1969 we had that level of technology. I think they underestimated the task then had to fake it, it was a huge political thing, it wasn't about science, they couldn't possibly have been allowed to fail

GaspingGekko · 20/04/2023 18:10

Yes, all those thousands of people, the astronauts, engineers, etc who pretended to be involved in making it happen, the photographers who took the fake shots. Not one of them in all this time has decided to expose the truth.

And the Russians, who could easily prove it wasn't true with photos of the moon lacking the evidence that the Americans made it there, and therefore win a huge propaganda victory, have not bothered to do so.

Yup, seems plausible.

Nichebitch · 20/04/2023 18:10

My ex works for the ESA and disspairs at comments like this. Why wouldn’t someone believe all the space agencies in the world (aka, the experts), is beyond me

You watched this episode of a soap opera about the royal family, and think it is factual? The educational system is letting us all down.
The Crown´When Neil Armstrong (Henry Pettigrew), Buzz Aldrin (Felix Scott), and Michael Collins (Andrew Lee Potts) visited Buckingham Palace, Philip was excited to have a private audience with them, only to be deeply disappointed when the astronauts couldn't provide the answers the Duke of Edinburgh desperately wanted. Yet none of this actually occurred, at least, not the way it's portrayed by The Crown

QuintanaRoo · 20/04/2023 18:10

It’s a completely different type of rocket 🤷‍♀️. If they are trying to push technology with bigger rockets capable of being reused and carrying 100 people there will be bumps along the way.

Jim Lovell too. OP could ask him if they really did have a problem on Apollo 13 😂

Yes I do think the OP is batty and if it didn’t happen it would have come out long before now. Trump and his ego would have probably come out and said “I will be the first US president to get us to the moon” if there was a chance to do so
