DH just shouted at me for putting on deodorant due to 'irrating his lungs'!?

I just got an ear full from DH because I had the audacity to have a late evening shower (I was tending to my toddler and didn't have time during the day). I put on deodorant in the bedroom and he was in bed and had a right go at me for this saying that the smell from the deodrant and steam from the shower (!) really affects his breathing and irritates his lungs. He made a big show of coughing and opening the windows and said I was selfish for having a shower so late.

I had a go back because I find this SO unreasonable. Who had have a go at someone for simply having a shower and putting on deodorant!?

Time to switch to role on or stick deodorant.
Ideally both of you would apologize to each other for shouting. But I think you need to take your husband at his word when he says he finds aerosol deodorants irritating to his lungs.

Sirzy · 19/04/2023 17:25

I can’t help but wonder how many times the DH has tried to point out the issues he has with the deodorant. I’m betting it’s not the first time the topic has come up.

happyumwelt · 19/04/2023 17:25

He shouldn't have shouted but YABVU to spray deodorant about in the bedroom when someone else is in there - it's really antisocial (think the same about gym changing rooms, etc). Get a roll on.

Verv · 19/04/2023 17:30

YANBU because someones had a go at you for taking a shower after spending the earlier part of the evening tending to your child.

That said, aerosol deodorant can make people cough. I use it and occasionally when ive used it in the same room as my partner she's done a "pfpfpffpff god thats potent go spray somewhere else! but she's never "had a go".
Thats a dividing line.

ASimpleLampoon · 19/04/2023 17:36

I get headaches from spray deodorants that can last all day. I ask my husband to spray only in the bathroom next to the open window and to only spray what he needs. No need to spray like hes attacking a mutant bluebottle. A small inconvenience to him versus me being sick for a day. Roll ons don't affect me at all.

FourTeaFallOut · 19/04/2023 17:37

Aerosol deodorant is a trigger for my asthma. I'm not dramatic but the effects can be.

ASimpleLampoon · 19/04/2023 17:39

If he's asked you not to do it before then YABU. I have got cross with my husband because he's done this without thinking after being told several times it makes me sick.

ily0xx · 19/04/2023 17:46

They are completely toxic to breath in. There is a lot of research on this.

Newlifenewme · 19/04/2023 18:24

Sorry another vote in favour of the husband. I use roll on because my DH struggles with sprays and I spray perfume when he’s not in the room

Breathe in. Or toxic to take a breath.

MidnightEagle · 19/04/2023 20:03

I changed to roll on several years ago due to my son having eczema and asthma. I agree they can be unpleasant for anybody though. The only spray I now use is dry shampoo but I only use (in emergency) with the bathroom door shut and window wide open.

Pedants corner is over there ----->

Almie · 19/04/2023 21:29

I cannot stand spray deodorant, sorry OP! My younger brother still lives at home, and if I go to visit my mum and he uses it in his room, I can tell he's sprayed it all the way from downstairs (though he does use a totally excessive amount imo).

I really wouldn't be able to sleep in a room where it had been sprayed 🤢

DemBonesDemBones · 19/04/2023 21:47

I'm team DH, sorry. Aerosols are grim.

Decorhate · 19/04/2023 21:51

Aerosols are banned in our school as we are an asthma friendly school. I’m with your dh.

@Starhead69

I’m confused why you would put deodorant on after having a shower.

When would you put it on?

@brooksidebackside

i mean putting it on after a shower before bed.

pilates · 20/04/2023 05:32

Yes YABU

PassTheGinHere · 20/04/2023 13:46

In an ideal world. However, husband was asleep and woken suddenly by not being able to breathe. Nobody's at their most rational and ready to 'talk it through' and communicate whilst being woken suddenly and struggling to breathe.
If my husband did this, I'd hit hit the roof. That said, he doesn't he goes in a different room or floor and ventilates that room.

Quartz2208 · 20/04/2023 13:50

Did the shower steam up if so you aren’t ventilating properly and need to make sure you do otherwise can cause issues.

and yes another who hates spray. DH always does it in another room I don’t use

pimplebum · 20/04/2023 14:31

I hate spray
And why would you need to use it in bed?
He was a dick for shouting
