Friend told daughter to 'fuck off and die'

leepingup · 16/04/2023 17:20

My daughter and her friend are both 10, unbeknownst to me yesterday whilst I was in the shower, they pranked called a few of my friends. I found out because one of my friends text me to tell me. I said no more and that was that.

This morning daughter says to me, 'when we prank called your friend, 'Pete' he told us to 'fuck off and die' three times.'

I wasn't really sure how to handle the situation as they obviously shouldn't have been prank calling but also I think it's pretty obvious they are children.

So I text Pete and the messages went like this -

Me - Hey did you say to Amelia to go fuck herself and die yesterday, she said her and her friend prank called you yesterday, I didn’t know. Did you not realise it was her I presume? Xx

Pete - I didn't until she said her name!!! My intuition was right!!!

I don't really know what he means but I feel really uncomfortable about this.

Am I being dramatic? Should I leave it at that? Is it their own fault for prank calling?

It depends doesn't it? Cat adorable. Pushy, bloody weird. But then prank calling is a bit weird too. I guess keep them apart or unfortunately closely supervised when together

@Mycathatesmecuddling

*I guess it depends on whether they called his mobile or his landline

If they called his landline then wouldn't the call continue until they hung up?*

Wink What difference does being called on a landline make? Pete could still just hang up the phone!
Confused

If someone calls you on a landline they have to hang up. Otherwise when you pick the phone back up they would still be there

This is how certain scams work. Someone calls you on a landline, and pretends, for example, to be your bank. They tell you to call back on a certain number to prove its not a fake call. The person being scammed puts the phone down the scammer doesnt. So when the person being scammed then picks the phone back up and dials the number the scammer can pretend to be the bank.

So if Pete is on a landline, and wanting to make a call and every time he picks it up the kids are still there that might be frustrating

Im not saying this is what happened, I was answering a question someone asked.

@Mycathatesmecuddling
Well we have a landline still, and when I hang up the phone, the call ends.
But regardless all Pete needs to do is hang up the phone on his end and move on!

That only lasts a few seconds. If someone hangs up on you on a landline, after a count of three, you are automatically disconnected. It’s not the case that the phone stays connected indefinitely if only one side hangs up.

Are you still living in 1972? That's absolutely not the case.

This is all very odd. I would text Pete back and asked why he said that to her?

No need, it's obvious, he was pissed off being interrupted by a stupid call.

Im going off the age UK website they've been quoted in the news about this on numerous occasions too

If its not correct then perhaps they need to stop saying it is

FarmGirl78 · 17/04/2023 08:41

I don't understand everyone saying he must have known it was a child.

If it was a "put on posh voice" it could have well sounded like an adult putting on a silly voice.

I would be more concerned with my child inconveniencing and annoying adults. How do you know they weren't going to speak to someone chatty who kept them talking, and ended up grooming them?

IMO your child's behaviour is NOT ok and that's what needs addressing. I'd be fuming with my child.

TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl · 17/04/2023 09:31

This thread has made me nostalgic for all the times my mum would bellow on the landline to my Nan “MUM!!! YOU HAVENT HUNG UP THE PHONE! CAN YOU HEAR ME? MUM! MUM!!!” 🤣

TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl · 17/04/2023 09:32

Seriously though OP @leepingup were you not mortified your child had done this to your friends?

Gondala · 17/04/2023 09:37

OP is also trusting her DD in that all they asked was to buy a cat. That may not be the truth and the may actually said something offensive.

WaltzingWaters · 17/04/2023 09:45

I mean, I remember prank calling people as a kid.
But I think now if someone phoned meqq asking if I wanted to buy a cat I may think it were a scam call. In which case I may say something like that if it weren’t obvious it were kids calling. Obviously I wouldn’t say it if I knew it were just kids messing around.

fitzwilliamdarcy · 17/04/2023 09:45

I strongly suspect that she prank called Pete three times and only on the third time did he get so riled up that he told her to FOAD.

The lesson from this is that if you prank call random people then you take what you're given in return. You need to discipline your daughter, not Pete.

I used to work in a shop where a couple of ten year olds would prank call incessantly - it drove me around the bend and I wish I could've said something similar to them without their parents going off at me.

WaltzingWaters · 17/04/2023 09:46

*me now. Not meqq!

Nordicrain · 17/04/2023 09:47

Well your friend shouldn't have said that, but your DD should not be making prank calls to your friends. Or anyone. Noone thinks that's funny, except the people pranking, and sometimes they can be very upsetting for the people on the receiving end. So really I think you need to focus on you DD's behabiour (and I can't belive you didn't acknowledge to your friend that you DD wasn't ok to prank call him).

Absolutely. Children nearly always downplay their role when they’ve fucked up.

Im betting they said pussy instead of cat, and are trying to play it off to their parent like they were offering him a kitten, when really they were pretending to be sex workers.

I’d bet £1.50 on this being the case.

CantBeArsedOrAsked · 17/04/2023 10:31

What's hilarious about asking if somebody wants to buy a cat?

QueenCamilla · 17/04/2023 10:48

Those are some iron-arsed 10 year olds to not flinch at a grown man swearing at them. The same type that would repeatedly ring a door-bell of a disabled person and such like.
Clearly zilch plus zero parenting too and all the feral kids know that fact, hence them (the daughter and the friend) being so comfortable at taking the adult's own phone for this prank shit.

Pete belongs with the characters so hardly surprising there's some effin' going on. With any street-smarts he's probably nailing his letterbox shut as we speak

Gondala · 17/04/2023 09:37

Yup. The innocent ten year old saying "want to buy a cat for £1.50?" is totally at odds with the ten year old that apparently doesn't care if a grown man tells her to FOAD.

Yes far more likely.

ThreeblackCats · 17/04/2023 11:38

If some out of control kids prank called me today, I’d probably tell them the same “fuck of and die” as we are waiting by the phone for details of the coroners report because then we can organise the funeral.
How about you educate you child, do some actual parenting and quit trying to make your child everyone else’s issue.

@Saltired I think you have cracked it. I never thought of that but it makes his reaction make sense.
