Friend told daughter to 'fuck off and die'

My daughter and her friend are both 10, unbeknownst to me yesterday whilst I was in the shower, they pranked called a few of my friends. I found out because one of my friends text me to tell me. I said no more and that was that.

This morning daughter says to me, 'when we prank called your friend, 'Pete' he told us to 'fuck off and die' three times.'

I wasn't really sure how to handle the situation as they obviously shouldn't have been prank calling but also I think it's pretty obvious they are children.

So I text Pete and the messages went like this -

Me - Hey did you say to Amelia to go fuck herself and die yesterday, she said her and her friend prank called you yesterday, I didn’t know. Did you not realise it was her I presume? Xx

Pete - I didn't until she said her name!!! My intuition was right!!!

I don't really know what he means but I feel really uncomfortable about this.

Am I being dramatic? Should I leave it at that? Is it their own fault for prank calling?

The thing is with pranks and prank calls for people like Pete is that we know nothing about Pete or his situation. He may be elderly, he may have just got bad news, he may have been expecting a phone call, he may be ill. Which is basically the sum total of why pta king is an all-round bad idea.

I know I’ve had times in my life where life has been going well until you get bad news, or something awful happens, and if anyone had caught me with a hilarious prank call then they’d have been told to go fuck themselves as well - if I was feeling generous.

If that makes me boring and no fun so be it - there’s plenty of other ways to find humour than having a so-called joke at someone else’s expense.

Teach your kid not to be a dick.

I’m sure all the friends have survived the trauma of the cat prank call. I think Pete is the one coming across a bit strangely here, not the 10 year olds who are a) 10 and b) not being sweary and scary. Hopefully he’s generally a nice guy and meant it lightheartedly. Kids told not to do this again. Job done.

It doesn’t matter that he ‘survived’ it - it’s a shitty thing to do and part of growing up is knowing when you’ve encroached on people’s boundaries.

Butchyrestingface · 16/04/2023 19:50

I was on the receiving end of some choice language as a kid when me and a friend prank called strangers once on a wet, boring Saturday afternoon. Grin

We were younger than 10 though, that seems a bit old for such nonsense. Obviously I didn't prank call my mother's FRIENDS because I wasn't totally stupid.

I can't really get in the headspace imagining a situation where OP's child prank calls someone else, and it's the someone else's response that OP objects to, not the fact her kid has been winding people up in this way.

How did so many people make it to adulthood without hearing (and using) the expression "fuck off and die"

I'm late 20s and have only ever used it if I genuinely don't give a fuck if someone's dead, said with vitriol and hate. I've never said it just because I'm annoyed with someone. Telling someone to die is a really serious and vicious thing to say tbh.

Totally bizarre. Ever heard of sticks and stones... ?

Jonei · 16/04/2023 19:54

I genuinely don't know people who use it like this and yes if someone said it to me, I'd assume they really despised me and would like me to die.

Wtaf? 🤨

Mycathatesmecuddling · 16/04/2023 19:56

Nalupa · 16/04/2023 19:48

Then I don't think specifying the way in which you want them to die should be a big deal either, it's the same thing, but people would treat it differently for some odd reason.

Like you'd all just move on in a relationship if someone you had an argument with told you to die???

I genuinely don't know people who use it like this and yes if someone said it to me, I'd assume they really despised me and would like me to die.

Do you also assume they want you to masturbate when they tell you to fuck yourself? Why argue one half of the sentence must be taken literally and not the other half?

Nalupa · 16/04/2023 20:00

No, dying is not the same is killing yourself.

Right, wishing for accidental death is ok but not a suicide. But you shouldn't specify the nature of the accidental death I think? So fuck off and die is ok, but fuck off and get hit by a bus or fuck off and have a heart attack might not be/would be treated as a serious thing? Or I hope you get a terminal illness?

I do find it hard to follow why
die is different to the others logically.

At least I'm learning something about how most people seem to interact, I suppose! Quite shocked by it as I've gone this whole time thinking it a very serious thing...but then it's not something I've heard commonly, I guess (thankfully). I've never heard it used in an average argument so maybe that's sheltered me from how people use it. Would explain why I think it's serious if I've not heard people use it the way you lot do.

he's entitled to say what he likes to a prank caller.

If they were adults maybe.

Not kids who aren't even being offensive in what they're saying, just silly and innocent.

Who said he knew they were kids? And they aren't innocent if they are making prank calls

Gridhopper · 16/04/2023 20:05

@TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl

I’m giving Pete the benefit of the doubt, maybe it was the straw that broke the camel’s back but it does sound like he just thought it was funny to tell them to fuck off and die - I find that a bit weird, but maybe he has redeeming qualities. Kids have been told not to prank call again coz it’s annoying, that’s enough. I genuinely think a 10 year old would struggle with the idea that all Mum’s friends are potentially teetering on the edge and their actions could be psychologically catastrophic

OMGitsnotgood · 16/04/2023 20:07

exactly this. Honestly OP take your DC under control and stop enabling their bad behaviour

How about just not do it because it's not a nice thing? And sometimes when you're not nice to someone they can be not nice back.

PissedOffPete was probably more of a deterrent to the girls doing it again than OP's reaction.

Createausername1970 · 16/04/2023 20:13

I am with Pete on this one.
His response wasn't great, but at some point kids need to learn that if they don't want to be on the receiving end, then don't do stuff like prank calls to deliberately provoke a reaction.

I am more bothered by the fact that you aren't bothered by the fact that your daughter has been prank calling your friends.

Teateaandmoretea · 16/04/2023 20:14

Tbf I wouldn’t have personally done what Pete did. But avoid deliberately pissing random people off for no good reason because they may behave in a way you don’t like is a life lesson.

niugboo · 16/04/2023 20:15

All kids break rules, that doesn’t mean you don’t address the behaviour!

Gridhopper · 16/04/2023 20:16

@AngryGreasedSantaCatcus i agree with you - but they have been told not to do it again (presumably the reason given it’s not nice/people don’t like it). And I do think Pete’s thing was a bit weird, but I’m not suggesting he write a sorry letter, or feel terrible, or is an out of control ‘dick’ with no feelings, which some posters seem to be suggesting the kids are

I never really thought of "fuck yourself" as a sex thing tbf!!🤔 Like people who say "fuck Donald Trump" don't mean fuck in the sex way, fuck is a versatile swear word that has many ways of being used... always thought of it similar to "I've fucked my carpet with red wine" as in it's ruined, or "fuck off" or "fuck it up". Fuck doesn't just mean sex. Of course if you were sending flirty texts and used "fucked myself" it's very different to "fucked myself with debt".

Either way, no harm would come to me for taking "fuck yourself" literally if I thought of it that way, I guess I'd have a great time 😅, but "go die" can. Just feels extreme. But yes, a me thing if people genuinely treat it as a light hearted throwaway thing to say. Surely people wouldn't treat their husband telling them to fuck off and die in an argument the same way as fuck yourself though? Maybe they do idk.

UnctuousUnicorns · 16/04/2023 20:35

Hi Ross! 👋 Interesting that you prefer unprotected sex.... 🤔

(Need to increase the opacity on your digital "marker pen", OP. 😅 )

EasterBreak · 16/04/2023 20:43

Yabu if I was getting prank calls I might tell them to fuck their mum. I wouldn't assume it was my mates 10 year old. She's in the wrong op.

AngryGreasedSantaCatcus · 16/04/2023 20:47

If some told you die with or without the fuck, and you take it literally what do you think might happen? A piano will fall on your head next time you walk down the street?

ASimpleLampoon · 16/04/2023 20:48

If one of my friends kids called me and tried to sell me a cat for 1.50 I'd probably find it hilarious but let their parents know while trying to keep a straight face

PinkyFlamingo · 16/04/2023 20:51

leepingup · 16/04/2023 17:30

They're 10 😂 calm down.

Ah so there will be no consequences then, that will help.
