He charged me £10 for a lift

It's our neighbour, we've known him for 6 years and I felt we'd become friends over that time so DH was happy enough to give him the odd cigarette when he asked for one.

This gradually morphed into him knocking on almost every day, sometimes even twice a day and DH continued to oblige even after the price of cigarettes shot up, it became quite annoying actually but he's a friend and all that jazz. He'd occasionally give DH the odd quid in exchange. DH didn't ask him to. He isn't poor btw he's a business owner who owns properties. He could easily buy his own but begrudges buying a full packet.

If he needed a hand with something heavy (he owns a shop) he'd knock on and ask DH for a hand lifting, or for help when he was building something in his garden. We borrowed the odd thing briefly like a drill / screw driver. You get the picture. Neighbours helping one another out.

Anyway.. we are moving house and don't have the use of our car at the moment as its in the garage. We needed to take a couple of small boxes to the new house a 5 minute drive down the road. DH asked neighbour if he'd mind giving him a lift there. No help lifting required. There wasn't much.. but too much to carry alone.

Neighbour says sure, we thank him and then once DH is putting the boxes in the boot he asked me for £10 petrol money, cheerily adding that it saves me paying for a taxi. The taxi would have been cheaper and you can drive 50 odd miles with a bloody tenner.

I was a bit gob smacked to be honest but handed it over as I needed to crack on but it has left a bad taste.

Are we being unreasonable or was he?

Fuck him off in future and hope he burns in hell. What a twat.

You were unreasonable to just hand over the £10 without saying anything and carrying on like there was no issue. More fool you!

That's a bit harsh, you're busy, tired and someone catches you off guard, or you dont like confrontation, I think I'd pay up too. But yes I wouldn't keep in touch so it'll be his loss in the long run.
OP don't dis yourself, he's the CF, and no loss to your life.

Folicky · 17/04/2023 02:27

Maybe he's sorry to see you move and his resentment at the loss made him be a dick

maddy68 · 17/04/2023 03:38

Just say you can put it towards the fags you've had of us that you owe for

Murdoch1949 · 17/04/2023 05:22

Tell him it invalidates his insurance to charge for lifts.

Don’t let it grind you down. You paid £10 to get rid of a piss taking letch… I think that’s cheap…. All things considered 😀

This
Cheap way to find out

That's 5 days worth of cigarettes to save yourself £100s and an annoyance

Keep ignoring the door and you're moving too! Result

Don’t feel bad OP, sadly there are a lot of people out there that pose as ‘friends’ while you are useful to them, they’ll except freebees left right and centre, but never show their true colours until you need a favour or something happens in your life and you need someone!!…..
The good news is you’ll soon be moved & will never again have to see this guy!… and remember the fact he’s charged you a tenner for a lift has saved you a fortune in future gifted cigarettes and feeding him at moving in party etc!
Put this experience down as exactly that… pop it in your fuckit bucket and move on.

CF came a knocking whilst we were loading up the van. DH told him he no longer smokes and vapes instead. Obviously CF will suspect he's lying but never mind.. as others have said £10 is a small price to pay to be rid of a scrounger. We're in the new house now and are very unlikely to see him again 🙂

🤣🤨 It’s funny but that could have been his thinking.

A tenner won't even buy him a packet these days.
